10 Gigabit Eth-switch: affordable, compact, durable (CRS304-4XG-IN)

  • Introducing the CRS304-4XG-IN - a compact yet highly capable 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch
designed to simplify your network setup routine. Unlike typical 10 Gigabit products, the new
CRS304 is equipped with four ready-to-use 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports straight out of the
box. That’s right - you don’t need any extra SFP modules, just pure plug-and-play! Also, there
is an additional Gigabit Ethernet port - for management purposes.

Hands down the best product presentation. I had to choose between drilling a hole through a wall and using one extra port of my existing switch, or being lazy and ordering a new 10GbE one. After this video, I ordered this one because you just deserve it.

The PoE IN shuld be on a 10Gb port. So you can power it from the 10Gb switch and have 10Gb uplink at the same time.

Would have loved this switch if it weren't for this stupid reason. I instead had to go with the UniFi Flex Mini 2.5 instead, as it has PoE in on a usable port to power and connect it to the upstream switch.

    Couple of Questions.
    1. Are the 10G ports 2.5G and 5G compatible - not always a given.
    2. Is the PoE port 3af/at mode a or b (or both - have been having issues with Cube60Pro recently)
    3. I presume the 1G port is not in the switch chip - is that the case?. If so, is it bridgable on ROS and switchable in SWOS or completely dedicated to management somehow.
Keep up the good work team. This particular set of features does not suit us ATM, but when we get the outdoor PoE version, and some APs to match, will be very interesting.

Here's what I'd like to see, my "Wish List"
A 10G or faster switch, DIN rail mount, like this.
    Two SFP+ Cages,
Multiple POE 10G, POE IN and at least two OUT.
The POE Out should be capable of powering a dual Starlink Terminals, OR, a wireless access point.
Dual Internal software stacks where physical ports can be assigned to either Router OS OR SwOS With Dedicated Internal Connectivity between them for a Trunk Link.
Additionally add a Solar Charge Controller.
One single device. Mounted at the base of a tower, can connect to and power a starlink terminal. Operates at 10G, can send that 10G over fibre to wherever, or back out the switch port via POE to a access point, or a wireless bridge.
This can all be done at Layer 2, or one of the 10G ports can be placed in a VLAN, and assigned to RouterOS - the rest of the switch ports running on SWOS can operate at wire speed independent of any routing that is going on. RouterOS can be remotely restarted without interfering with SWOS forwarding of traffic. Ports can be remotely turned on and off, essentially rebooting your starlink dish.
Oh, the toggle for turning ports on and off, should have a delay built in, so you can remotely come in over starlink, turn off starlink and after a timeout the switch port turns back on the power to POE and restarts the starlink connection.
A small module that uses laptop wireless cards for providing local wifi for any devices should also be included for those who want it.
The idea is to create a standalone tower, powered by solar or a generator - that can receive a Starlink connection, and has multiple options of what to do with that connection. Having DUAL SWOS or RouterOS chips on the board, and the ability to assign any of the physical ports to any of the options, means one could run two RouterOS with inter-connectivity via a dedicated internal link, or two SwOS with a dedicated internal link. Or a combination thereof. You have a switch and a router operating independently or together, or as fail-over for each other.
If both SwOS are being used, one can be independently restarted of the other while traffic continues to flow.
Additionally ports designed for chaining these devices directly together at wire speed, essentially creating a stacked switch environment, with build in fail over.
Designed for cold weather deployment in Canadian Winters.
Then all that needs to happen is solar panels are sized to power everything, a tower is constructed, and the whole setup can be packed in a deployment package.
Use case is disaster communications, and immediate deployment.
Lets say an area has a tornado or a flood. This setup is placed on a Quad or an ATV and driven to the location. Once there, It's deployed - providing high speed connectivity for anyone in the area via wifi. They can be chained together, to quickly setup a network of them via wireless point to point links on the towers.
Routing can be setup so that in the event one starlink drops offline the others in the network take up the load, while local devices always route out of their nearest connected starlink.
Adding interoperability with the HAM radio traffic, and APRS systems etc, one can create quick deploy communications packages in as small a deployment space as possible. It shouldn't mater what device you have, be it radio - or a laptop, or a tablet - once deployed, it acts as a bridge and a hub for passing traffic.
Complicated, yes - but if any company out there is crazy enough to build it - that company would be MikroTik.

8 port version for under $300 USD will sell tons for home users. 4 ports not quite enough with one being used for uplink.
Love the redundant power. I hope you can manually set the failover instead of only using highest voltage. For example always use dc1 unless it drops below usable voltage, then switch to dc2. That way you could have a simple 12V (or 24/48, whatever) battery to act as an ups on dc2 and not have massive conversion losses from a traditional UPS. Btw what is the nominal voltage? It seems it has buck/boost built in, but what is the hardware running at?

It is an interesting addition to the line of mikrotik switches. However for true flexibility, a Swiss knife switch, I would like a version with one SFP+ and at least one POE out port. Better yet if we can power it with Poe++ and exit with at least Poe af standard. This would be perfect both in home for small use scenarios and for emergencies in the field where you need to deliver WiFi 6 or 7 over great distances between work areas and leisure areas that are demanding ever increasing speeds without worrying about interference. A massive upgrade for the SFP RB260 (and Hex S, if a router model can be made).

  • @KamenMinkov
    @KamenMinkov 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I kind of agree with the notions expressed here - it would've been better if we had PoE-in on one of the 10 gig ports. It's also a bit strange that the voltage range for the PoE is a bit more restrictive than the one on the DC jack or the 2-pin - if the noted 36-57 V is correct, it means I won't be able to power it through a router powered by 24 V. Maybe this problem would be largely alleviated once you release a router with something better than passive PoE out. Still, it looks great and I'm probably buying one or two of these switches.
