@@Muuumenn When I lived at the beach the weather was wrong constantly. But inland it's pretty spot on. But by all means do the research and decide for yourself but I'm sure they didn't deliberately go into a massive storm. Or maybe they got trapped and had to go one way or another. I agree. I watched a documentary about a ship that actually sunk. And some guy was on the evacuation boat complaining that he didn't get to eat dinner yet. I would have punched him in the face and told him he is lucky to be alive. People are living like life is supposed to be a romantic comedy.
I was on this cruise for my son's 18th Birthday. I love Norwegian and have so much respect for the crew in how calm they were and just kept up at vacuuming up the water, wiping walls down and keeping as much ahead of it as they could. The water was just pounding the glass doors you would use to walk outside and water leaking in was non stop. They did manage to keep most things open and staff had a great attitude the entire time. The ship was definitely bucking a bit but nothing you could not navigate. I just this week got back from a 15 day cruise on the Prima and, as always, the service and staff were impeccable. I do have to say, even though my suite on the Prima was gorgeous and spacious, I much prefer the Breakaway as an overall ship. Much too much space was taken away from the interior of the Prima and given to outside decks. Everything inside, other than my suite, was smaller and way more crowded than on the Breakaway.
A moment of silence for all the people on this cruise who have sea sickness, made ten times worse by this storm. May their lunches rest in piece Also their dinners And breakfasts
Ryukachoo ........I was a crab fisherman in the Bering Sea for 8 years. Every time I went out I would feel funky for a few days and then it would pass. When I got on land it would take a few days to get used to that feeling too. No shit.

It’s like walking around drunk lol it’s pretty fun especially after having a few drinks. Hopefully they had shows and entertainment going on for everyone stuck inside. Cruise ship entertainment is damn good too.
I crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth 2. We hit a day-and-night-long storm with 40 foot waves crashing over the bow as she pitched and plunged up and down (stabilizers only stop rolling, not pitching which would be dangerous to a ship's hull). In our dining room, designed to seat over 1,000, only a couple dozen passengers showed up. The stewards threw all proper behavior to the wind and divided us into two warring camps, firing dinner rolls at each other and using serving trays as shields. Rather fun when dressed formally (a requirement on Cunard ships for dinner). Then we retired to the nightclub aft (dancing in the Grand Salon had been canceled when a drum rolled off the stage) where those handful of us who weren't seasick partook in steward-designed contests, such as standing up straight for as long as possible as the ship pitched. The winner got a $90 t-shirt from the Harrods store in the shopping center onboard. The next morning it was sunshine and smooth seas as almost 2,000 passengers stumbled out of their sick beds, many still in pajamas, to partake of the brunch served in the nightclub. I never had so much fun.
My parents went on a cruise annually for 15 years and loved it! They were extremely lucky! Didn’t encounter any bad storms, norovirus, people fighting etc. They went on many different cruise lines too. I watch these videos and that’s enough cruising for me! 😁
I get seasick badly but think on a huge ship, it shouldn’t be a problem. The my recommendations had hi stuff pop on so I watched a very. Oh hellllll no! U r right, I have cruised enough watching these! 😹
They are fine for the boat's normal operation. They didn't plan on going through this weather. Typically it is avoided completely. Anyways, things just got wet... no biggie.
@@gingerman5123 Perhaps It is just me, but why would you want shopping mall doors on a ship? part of the appeal of a ship is ship doors. I hope the ship wasn't just glued together because that's enough for calm weather.
@@ElectricityTaster The ship can take much much worse weather than that, structurally. It has "mall doors" because it is basically a floating mall or resort. Getting wet may damage the upholstery but the ship itself is just fine.
The Privilege of sailing through one of natures greatest events on one of the most harshest environments on the planet at no extra cost !!! YOU LUCKY PEOPLE.
Considering that we now know the storm was a powerful record breaker. Ship and crew came through great. A true testament to the seaworthiness of a huge cruise ship.
You may want to actually find out what happened to cause El Faro to go down. They didn't intend on sailing through it. The storm turned north on them and put them in the center instead of the outer edges.
An extratropical cyclone or "low" with a pressure drop in its center of about 24hPa within 24h (depending on geographical latitude) is called in meteorology a "bomb" or rapid cyclogenesis since a famous paper from 1980 from Sanders and Gyakum in Monthly Weather Review journal. I think the video illustrates well, how they came to this term especially as also other terms in meteorology like "fronts" are derived from war business. A strong baroclinic area and extensive release of latent heating (condensation of water vapour) is needed to make this happen. The North Atlantic area around Newfoundland and Greenland during wintertime sees this rather often as the warm waters from the Sargasso Sea mix with flows from the Arctic ice shields leading to strong temperature gradients. This deveopment is accompanied by strong wind storms.
Eclipsed Sure, the captain downloads a free App and the operation of a multi million dollar cruise ship gets adapted to what the App says. There are special maritime weather services that go far beyond your standard weather predictions. And they are still not always accurate in regards to the seastate, the wind, the location and the duration.
@@BlaizedAsh Weatherman can't even get it right for the next day in cities half the time. You think a cruise line can predict the weather 4 days later....On The ocean!!!
@Ciwi I know the difference between a sub and a ship. I'm in the navy. I'm also aware that cruise ships are the only ships that aren't watertight, a design choice that I consider borderline retarded. Any other ship, whether it be cargo, utility, military, or whatever, would consider a major leakage in a storm a major design flaw. All ships of that size are designed to withstand forces greater then those portrayed in the video. The ship being able to stay together is not spectacular in any way.

I have been on literally dozens of cruises over the past 20 years, probably close to 200 days at sea. The people on board the ship will look back at this as an adventure. I honestly consider them somewhat fortunate that they got to experience the wild side of nature and the ocean. The ship was never in any danger, it is the risk you take when you go on a cruise.
They're at a risk if they're poorly engineered, though. Which has happened. Luckily this was a well engineered ship apparently, if it's Norwegian engineered at least it should not contain faults; it's the last country that should or would fail anything related to the sea (extremely high competence on all fields all over)

If you are actually interested you should look up how you can get into a research expedition and then look into upcoming expeditions. It is something that would be kinda hard to accomplish. I personally think it would be a cool experience all around if you were serious enough to put in the effort. Yup, as long as it's not made in chna. lol I heard they tried to build Titanic 2 in Chna but it didn't get finished. Ran out of funds. Bet it would not have lasted long on the ocean due to bad parts.
I was on the sailing. A lot of water damage. We were smart enough to remove bottles and glasses off our counter top in the room. Been on many rough seas cruises so it wasn’t complete hell as others say except that 1am-4am time slot. The listing was definitely hard for some and that’s understandable. Everyone made it back safe and the ship set sail the next day after overnight repairs and inspection. That’s the important part here. Everyone made it safely back to NY. Had we not gone back to NY there would be an uproar as well. Not sure how to please every single person. If you went to the magician show the next night, those who did go out the mood was positive. I can see why there are many videos as well. 3k first timers on board. 1300 repeat passengers. For the 3k newbies it can be a bit scary
Guessing then, that if the crew are wearing life jackets, you ought to do the same? In any case, it would be an experience that’s for sure! I’m torn between thinking it would be awesome (as well as terrifying) or just plain nope’ing out. Love cruising and don’t generally get travel/seasick.
How can some people demand a bigger compensation? No one can control the weather, and if you go on holiday somewhere else do you demand the country you visit to pay you for lost swimming time because the weather was bad or something?
I think the year limit on the 25% is bullshit tho, if you want to give compensation then atleast give the people at least 2 years to claim it, people don’t have that much holiday time off work or even the money to afford this sort of trip again within 12 months. Only the people who could afford to book another cruise that soon (People who that 25% off doesn’t affect) would have any benefit from that
The compensation is nothing, it's a coupon that can't be used with other coupons and expires in a year. Wouldn't be surprised if you can find something cheaper without it.
Everyone looking for compensation, You already had it folks !!! Your lives are safe and your here thanks to a professional captain and crew , be grateful for that instead of monetary reimbursements
In Australia we clipped the edge of a cyclone and it ended up exactly like this, water everywhere and wind whistling, the best part was that they still let me ride the Segways in 50 kmh winds, and my god that was fun, you just have to live with no brakes and an immense tailwind
The cruise line should not have to compensate people for weather that is out of their control. It's nature. It's not something the cruise did wrong. If anything, passengers should be grateful to the ship's crew especially the captain for keeping them safe in that because that looks not only terrifying but life threatening as well.
Kamila J Lol they shouldn’t have been cruising in that weather in the first place. They knew there was a storm in the way, just underestimated how brutal it would have been. My buddy worked in a cruise ship for 8 years and when I showed him this he said the Captain was stupid for cruising into this. I would have demanded a refund as well. There are practices and tons of technology put in place to avoid these nightmarish incidents.
You're comment is uneducated and completely retarded. Neither you or your "friend" have any idea how a ship or weather works. The ship was in NO danger and that storm exploded in the Atlantic and they didn't have any "warning" that was going to happen. Welcome to the Atlantic in January. Calling the captain stupid is such a lazy comment from someone with no maritime experience. Thank god you and your "friend" are such experts!
Ted yellowstone Hahahaha Ok Bud. Crazy how they can predict weather a week ahead but didn’t see this coming. Sounds like YOU’RE the uneducated fool! 🤣🤣🤣 Also just because you might own a rowboat does t make you a Maratime expert either baha. Goof
PaulyG Speaks No one, no modern instruments can accurately predict weather. They can estimate what would be the weather. Weather patterns are always changing. It is not static. A low pressure area may form without warning, evolving into a storm.
But they should plan ahead by checking weather updates consistently and cancelling cruises if the weather is going to be bad. Do not make excuses for them, they are at fault for not adaquetly preparing or even sailing away from a storm.
For someone who was on board, your roughly 6 minute film respects our time and shows a lot of perspectives of what went down on the cruise ship to a level that one might assume you are a professional reporter of the BBC variety. Good on you.
Everyone in this comment section are litterly illitterate! -.- He CLEARLY ment that this "Storm" simply would be branded as normal weather in Norway and they are Pussies for making a big deal of it.

When I lived at the beach the weather was wrong constantly. But inland it's pretty spot on.
But by all means do the research and decide for yourself but I'm sure they didn't deliberately go into a massive storm. Or maybe they got trapped and had to go one way or another.
Hell I've been on a cruise ship where there wasn't a storm and there was shit just sliding around because the sea is rough and unpredictable. It is storm territory. It's where the massive storms form and they can be sudden

For sure.
I'd never get to experience anything else like that in my life most likely.

I went into this asking myself, “wtf is a *bomb cyclone* ?” 🤔😂
It go boom boom
Not to be confused with the ole firecracker typhoon. 😜 🤪

It's not like the cruise line can predict weather. You roll the dice with weather on a cruise.
Eclipsed Sure, the captain downloads a free App and the operation of a multi million dollar cruise ship gets adapted to what the App says.
There are special maritime weather services that go far beyond your standard weather predictions.
And they are still not always accurate in regards to the seastate, the wind, the location and the duration.
ylekiote99999 there’s off seasons and on seasons so they kinda can . That’s why cruise ship tickets are cheaper during those months
No. The captain should know how to read his radars. They know about these storms in plenty of time to go around them, just like aircraft.

Yes, a ship that isn't watertight. Feat of engineering, no doubt.

True, an adventure. You have the right attitude! God bless.
Easy to say AFTER the fact.
They're at a risk if they're poorly engineered, though. Which has happened. Luckily this was a well engineered ship apparently, if it's Norwegian engineered at least it should not contain faults; it's the last country that should or would fail anything related to the sea (extremely high competence on all fields all over)

How can some people demand a bigger compensation?
No one can control the weather, and if you go on holiday somewhere else do you demand the country you visit to pay you for lost swimming time because the weather was bad or something?
Thomas Autengruber their just lucky they got any compensation
I think the year limit on the 25% is bullshit tho, if you want to give compensation then atleast give the people at least 2 years to claim it, people don’t have that much holiday time off work or even the money to afford this sort of trip again within 12 months. Only the people who could afford to book another cruise that soon (People who that 25% off doesn’t affect) would have any benefit from that
The compensation is nothing, it's a coupon that can't be used with other coupons and expires in a year. Wouldn't be surprised if you can find something cheaper without it.
Angultra exactly, they know no one will be using that who it would actually benefit
If your willing to pay for a vacation knowing the possibility of a weather change then how could you get compensation??

The cruise line should not have to compensate people for weather that is out of their control. It's nature. It's not something the cruise did wrong. If anything, passengers should be grateful to the ship's crew especially the captain for keeping them safe in that because that looks not only terrifying but life threatening as well.
Kamila J Lol they shouldn’t have been cruising in that weather in the first place. They knew there was a storm in the way, just underestimated how brutal it would have been.
