This is a song about a crime committed by the Russians against the Crimean Tatar people, represented by Jamala. In 1944, they deported all Crimean Tatars with children, women, and elderly people from their homes and left them to starve to death in the open steppe. About half the people died. After Ukraine's independence in 1991, some Tatars returned home. But after 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine and occupied Crimea, Tatars and Ukrainians are once again suffering from the destruction and repression of Russians.

@@torukogo5120 The Crimean Tatars lived in the region of Crimea, in modern day Ukraine (or Russia, depending on who you ask) for several centuries. After that much time apart, it's logical for their language and Turkish to have evolved separately to the point where they're now different languages.

I'm a Crimean Tatar and I'm Turk. Crimean Tatar language is a Turkic language. Turkish people can understand these lyrics easily it is so similar to modern Turkish language. Before writing a comment pls make some research.

The language is Crimea Tatar, just read Crimea history short guide and you’ll understand why it is so similar to Turkish

Right now there hundert of kids, who came alone by train from this cities. They sleep in the Sporthall of the schools of my city. It just break my heart cause they are taken through Europe to their new homes. I remember being pretty happy when Ukraine won Eurovision that Year, was like taking position in Europe in front of the intentions of Rusia
