@@tommymorgan9293 personally I like the insane round counts he gets on guns that most people will never come close to. That and his opinions are based based off of a ton of experience so I've begun to value what he says. I just found him recently and that's just my stupid opinion lol

@@tommymorgan9293 He doesn’t apologize for or hide issues. He has his test parameters and a piece of kit either passes or fails on its own merits. Cowan and Yam do more to expose and present the shortcomings of guns and gear than other guntube channels.
Hilton has partnered with Springfield in the past and Cowan is on FN’s payroll, but if something doesn’t sit right with them, they’ll say it.

This is the first video of yours I have watched and I subscribed to your channel after the first minute. Very informative and factual with good reasoning to back your opinions. Fantastic job! Provided these guns can be reliable, which may take a little time based on initial reports, I'm in. To your question about "how to test," I think most people interested in this gun just want to see it run (or how to make it run by adjusting extractor tension etc). I've owned and been very happy with an SA TRP in .45. If this is the same quality but 2011 format and reliable, I don't "need" something fancier--though I don't doubt or critique the benefits of more expensive 1911/2011 platforms.

Appreciate your detailed overview on this pistol. Now behind an evil Iron Curtain, I didn't think that I'd be able to handle one of these, let alone purchase one, for a long time if ever. However a FFL in Utah didn't get the memo about our state's newly implemented mag limits and erroneously transferred in a 5" for a local customer to our shop. So to my pleasant surprise a week ago I got the chance to fondle a Prodigy and even dry-fire it before sending it back. This sample of one broke at around 4 lbs with a bit of creep and very little grit, which I admit was surprising considering my past experiences with Springfield 1911 triggers. I've now seen a number of YT videos on the gun and impressions seem as if they're all over the board regarding this pistol. The overall impression I get from this makes it sound like a bad 1911 cliché; break-in may definitely be required, but it seems like one of those "YMMV" scenarios. So in this light I'm interested to see how your production level pair work in your capable and experienced hands. 👍

I was hoping you'd be covering the Prodigy, Hilton. As I've come to expect, it was a fair and well-rounded overview. I'll be curious to see the follow-ups, and what, if any, mods you decide to make to it.
I have close to 400 rounds through my Prodigy 4.25" at this point - cheap production FMJs, re-manufactured FMJs, some Federal JHPs and a box of flat nose. The only thing it didn't like was some Fiocchi 147gr that I had, it ate everything else with zero problems. Production quality is comparable to my TRP, and so far I'm very pleased.

Hello Hilton, I am a fan of your work, and I love the vids. I was checking out your website, and saw your info on setting up sights.
When I got my first 1911 I didnt know the front site was set at the six o'clock position, and believe me, I couldn't hit anything, when I knew my technique, it was correct and the gun was fine, I thought I just sucked with 1911's too. ( other than revolvers, I wasn't really good yet with pistols, or really handguns in general)I started on rifles, and, with no ego, was a natural. So when I couldn't hit a wall with a pistol, I was frustrated.
This 1911, I bought from my Dad, who inherited it from his. New in the box, never been fired, (at least by my grandfather)but did have a trigger job, with a commander loop hammer new internals for a great 4,lbs trigger, (my grandfather had alot of guns, and had a pistlsmith, that was a close friend of his, who either got my grandpa's guns for him, he knew what he liked, orif not my grandfather always sent them to him before he'd use them, in other words very trusted. Anyway I knew the pistol was doing its job (a stainless Springfield GI) and I had a few good instructors help me , just never with the 1911 with me. So I couldn't figure it out. Realized one day, one page in my owners manual was missing. The one with the explanation of where the sights were set to, With a diagram.
I rarely miss now. It was such a dramatic difference that I now have all my pistol sights set like that. When I use 'em it is so natural and intuitive that I can't ever go back.
This is all tactical shooting too. Until reading your info, I didn't even know that bullseye is where it came from. I find it works so well that, again all of my pistols are now set up that way.
I guess my question is, would you be against setting them at the 6, if a customer wanted it?

I’m very interested to see how yours runs. I’ve seen some videos from influencers who got guns straight from Springfield and they ran fine. I’ve seen some videos from folks who bought them from a gun store and had lots of failures to feed.
I would be interested in a cost breakdown comparing buying a Prodigy and replacing all the MIM parts, versus buying a gun that doesn’t have MIM parts. I suspect that if you planned to replace all the MIM parts, that buying a Prodigy would not be cost effective and that you would have been better off biting the bullet to begin with.

Great video! I have the 4.25” and love it so far. Before putting a single round through it and after watching all the reviews on it I polished the disconnector and some internals. Doing this made for a smoother slide action and dropped the trigger pull from 6ish pounds to 5lbs 2 oz. I tuned the mag lips to the Atlas Gun Works specs from his video and got some sticky followers to float free in the tubes. I also dropped rounds in the chamber to make sure they fully seated, which they all did. I put 153 flawless rounds through it today. Polishing the disconnector upper part that interfaces with the slide really got rid of any hang ups that other people seem to have. Thanks again for the video and I can’t wait for more Prodigy videos.

I have a Staccato C2 , a Wilson Combat 4.25" Experior, and now interested in the Prodigy. To me, if a Prodigy is a reliable gun, like a duty reliable, then I would interested in purchasing one, but from all the reviews in the youtube, looks like the 4.25" Prodigy is more reliable than the 5" one. FTE or FTF are the most common symptoms in this newly released product.

Really like the way you stayed away from comparing this to a Staccato, definitely two different price points. Also spot on for me, as I wanted to make sure the double stack guns were going to be something I wanted to explore more. So the price point was what appealed to me too get my feet wet. I did experience 5 failures to feed in first range session of 300 rounds. The next 150 rounds were way worse. I cleaned and lubed the gun more then normal and the next 150 only one failure to feed. I kept at it, and now I'm around 800 plus rounds in with no malfunctions in the last 200 rounds. Only other thing is I wish they would have kept their dragonfly plate, and let me order the rmr plate for free. Kinda like Walther does with the pdp. So I had to purchase the plate I needed extra. I owned a dragonfly when they first came out, not to bad or not to great, the deal breaker for me was shutting off after 18 hours. No carry or home defense situation where I would want that. If you pick one of these up, be prepared for malfunctions until you get several hundred rounds down range.
There is lots to like about this gun, especially for the price point. Does it compare to my Springfield professional model, of course not. But the price difference is 2 grand. Overall I'm very happy with this gun. The feel and flatness of shooting it are awesome. Not to mention the accuracy is outstanding, and when the red dots installed it will even be better. My eyes are not as good as they used to be, I would never buy another gun that was not optic ready.

I recently bought a 1911-DS and it does have a great grip and shoots a good grouping. Because this is a new model gun with injection metal molding parts, I have been getting mis-feeds and jamming. The safety float is too high causing it to hit the upper rail fins when shooting. My local gunsmith took a look at it and said that this is not right and to call Springfield for a warranty replacement because one of the bullets jammed in a way that the firing pin did not strike the primer far enough to make it fire and he could not eject the round from the chamber. Not good when you have to disassemble a gun that has a live round that did not fire jammed into it.

Very informative vid...quick question...I have 100 rounds through my Prodigy and I've manually cycled it about 1000 times at home to smoothen it out and get the coating off the rails. It's SOOOO much slicker and no more issues with FTF. I did notice that the frame to slide fit naturally has more play after the break in but how much is too much? I'm getting up to .003 difference between frame and slide sizes after break the in. I did not measure prior. The barrel lock up is still good. Thanks for your help.

The Prodigy release got my attention, but I wound up buying a 4" Wilson SFX 9, for EDC. Having tuned many 2011 mags, for comp guns, the Wilson seems to have some significant upgrades over a traditional 1911/2011 platform, namely the external extractor, and more reliable mags. The SFX has a much better 1911 grip shape, compared to the EDC9 it replaces. I may have to pick up another...

RDR Gear does some black magic to run 5 inch 2011s using an M&P 5 inch holster as a base platform. Worth a look if you haven't already.

I address this in the video and I also did those mods to the same holster some years ago. No. I want anyone needing a duty holster to be able to source a stock one that'd conform to department policy where applicable.

Really enjoy your reviews. Thanks for what you do. Recently purchased a Prodigy 4.25" and being a guy that likes to tinker, I have replaced the grip module (Cheely) and MIM parts with EGW ignition kit and added an Atlas trigger. Needless to say, I'm bumping up against the Staccato price point but it was a lot of fun getting there. Trigger action and pull weight are significantly improved to about 3lbs. Also, adding the billet machined parts gives me a lot more confidence in the reliability and longevity of the pistol. It would be fun and educational to watch you upgrade your Prodigy in the same manner. The challenge could be: "Can I improve a Prodigy to make it closely comparable to a Staccato". If you don't upgrade the grip module, the cost to achieve that goal is reasonable. But I will say, the Cheely grip is very nice. I have a Staccato C2 and with the improvements I've made in the Prodigy, while it's not and never will be a Staccato......... its in the neighborhood. Regarding fit and function.

@@108Performance Thanks for sharing the other video. I did watch it and picked up a few more nuggets to try like working on the disconnector rail. I'm curious, why did you replace your slide stop? I assume your 10-8 design works better. I agree that the Prodigy OEM slide stop needs work. I've never experienced a slide stop that was more of a pain to reinstall. I was going to try modifying the OEM part. Can you provide info that would encourage me to buy your slide stop vs. modifying the original part? Thanks.

@@108Performance Thanks for answering all of my questions. Just a few more before I purchase a new slide stop. Does your slide stop have a groove to facilitate ease of installation? The description for your slide states: "Interior of lobe angled for easy installation - no more scratches on your slide".
I've noticed some of the Cabot and Wilson Combat Slide Stops have actual grooves to accomplish ease of installation and avoid slide scratching. I'm thinking this would solve the issue I'm having with installing the Prodigy OEM Slide Stop. Does your slide stop afford equivalent ease of installation? Does it have a groove? Thanks.
