But in the prodigy 140s there is a noticeable difference between stock and the kit - nosediving or tilting of the nose/front? of the follower is hard to accomplish with the Atlas kit just wants to stay parallel as opposed to a noticeable lag/dip on the stock mags until I push the very nose of the follower below the mag body at the front and in mine at that point there’s is almost a pop as friction or something is overcome - the atlas stays parallel as soon as I push - I bet if you can get the lips tuned up per skip/or using Altas mag tune kit or just de-burred, polish and in spec as can be (calipers on the tube etc) they would be pretty to very good. @@SkipsGunzGreat, that's the answer I was looking for. Thanks Skip. Although, my 'gunsmith' that's been building 1911's and 2011's for about 20yrs, says I should use a 10# recoil spring. He doesn't like to go 'too' modern with his thinking.

Can you explain why you keep saying a lighter recoil spring is better? The rule of thumb most competition guys and team gunsmiths (AMU & All Guard) have said is you go with a heavy enough spring for the gun to cycle and be efficient. Having a gun tuned to take all the recoil is better than your grip, hands, and arms doing it. Just because a 4.25" with a 7lb spring that is super easy to rack or cycle doesn't mean it's good for the gun and or shooter (which is good then that you have the recoil buffer in the gun with a lighter spring). Good video across the board on the comparison. 👍 I just bought a 4.25 Prodigy yesterday so I'll be adding better components to it.
I’d like to see a chart of recoil and main spring recommendations (matrix or something) based on say loads - like which you should use I bet light for the competition gun loads but how about my 147gr HST etc - bet a google search would do it maybe - oh wait I see a squirrel
@@sidanx7887 I do know Altas states they use a 17lb mainspring for all of their guns. Yes heavier competition loads ie 147s could benefit from a lighter recoil when you're under the clock. Lighter loads like 115s tend to kick more so a heavier one would be better. Yep....that squirrel ran off. Lol
I have bought most of the upgrades for the Prodigy, but need the help of a skillful gunsmith. I'm super-impressed by your videos, creativity, and attention to detail. Let me know your best contact- Thanks!
I do like my 5in prodigy. Does it compare to my chiraq? Not at all but for 1200 bux its a great beater to carry around and shoots great. Ive swapped out several parts (no real reason) because i cant leave well enough alone. Lol

I’m looking at getting into my first 2011 and wanting to stay under the 1500 mark because after looking at EVERY ONE of ur videos and ur website I want a cheaper option and want to have you do some customization for me.. what would u recommend me starting with.. the 4.25 or 5 inch prodigy or the Mac 9 or ria ds.. what is the best for me to start with and customize with you
I must have gotten lucky with my 5 inch Prodigy, it's running great and I didn't have to break the bank. IMO they are putting a hurting on all those super high dollar guns for a lot less money. I competed in USPSA for a number of years so I have a good idea of what it takes to be a good gun. At a third of the price they are nit picking them to sale something you really don't need unless you a competing with the big boys.
I’d say go to my website but it’s down at the moment. So if you want we can actually fully tune your prodigy if you need to work as a unit. Otherwise it’s an 8lb I use
@@SkipsGunzWell, my prodigy actually runs pretty decent. 2.75lb factory trigger, over a 1000rds with no malfunctions. I really have no complaints. I just like how easy your slides seem to rack and thought changing some springs may help with that. I have polished almost everything and did my own marvel cut but that’s it. I don’t know what mainspring and recoil it came with but I thought changing those may help 🤷♂️
Skip please help. lol I bought a Prodigy because I couldn’t afford a P. As much as I want to live mine literally doesn’t fuckin work. Like countless malfunctions. Only takes 124 grain. I got this to compete with and I’m so sad lol do I spend another grand making it work or do I sell it and just foot the bill for a Staccato
The heavier recoil spring has a purpose. It's there to help absorb the recoil of the reciprocating slide and protects the camming surfaces of the barrel, slide and frame. It's one of the reasons why GI spec guns seem to run forever while competition guns seem almost dead after a season or two. The other issue I saw is that the manual safeties are that way because this gun is meant to be carried. Those massive safety paddles would preclude the use of nearly any holster that goes high up on the slide to the grip. Most duty or OWB retention holsters are not going to be compatible with those massive paddles on the manual safeties. Those safety paddles also probably dig in like crazy if you're appendix carrying. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be carrying either of those "custom" Prodigys you have there.
I hear a lot of assuming without any experience. These are customers guns that they paid there hard earned money for and if that’s what they want that’s what they get.
@@SkipsGunz Those "assumptions" are basic gunsmithing from very experienced gunsmiths. For reliability, you want as heavy a recoil spring that allows the slide to cycle optimally. They didn't use heavier springs on a GI spec 1911 because of looser tolerances. It was to maximize feeding reliability and to extend longevity to the less consumable parts of the gun. Looser tolerances and a sloppier fit actually means less friction so you can get away with a lighter spring and still have function. Tighter tolerances generally have higher friction as there's more surface-to-surface contact and pressure which requires more spring to overcome friction. With hammer fired guns, this also means tuning the mainspring and other springs as a set. Most custom or semi-custom 1911s usually advise a break-in period for those tighter tolerance parts to wear in and polish each other. The old GI 1911s didn't have such a thing. The armorer just cleaned out the packing grease from the factory, lubed it up and handed it to a soldier for issue. As to the safeties, I don't care if other people spent their hard-earned cash on it, it doesn't make what I said invalid. They may have wanted more of a range or a race gun and that's okay. I approached it from a carry perspective where such massive gas pedal safeties won't fit any level two+ retention holster and can only really fit on level 1 retention holsters that don't go passed the trigger or competition holsters that are practically cut-out baskets in firearm like shapes with minimal to no retention. Massive safeties like those would not be fun appendix carrying as those stick out well beyond the rest of the gun and that shelf will go straight into the body. When I was still in the Air Force, our armory still had some old 1911s from the Korean War that still functioned and had so many rounds put through it the barrel was practically a smooth bore. It still shot and cycled just fine and had mostly stock internals. As expected, its accuracy sucked but was serviceable. This thing had probably seen 10s of thousands of rounds and was still trucking. It was a rattling mess, but still functioned. Most competition guns used by full-time competitors get tune-ups several times a year with a major overhaul annually or bi-annually. You neglect the maintenance on one of those and it'd refuse to run. That old 1911 was the definition of neglect but was still shooting. One is designed to maximize reliability above all else and the other purposely sacrificing reliability for maximized performance.
The entire internal setup needs to be replaced and tuned to get the complete setup. I offer something called the better Prodigy package Www.skipsGuns.com

I just bought a 4.25 Prodigy yesterday so I'll be adding better components to it.
Lol
@@erikmortenson73 I would love a matrix of the springs with use case and then buy all of them! Thanks for that info
My thoughts exactly. I got the 12lb Wolf recoil spring.

What’s your thoughts on the duramags that come with the Prodigy?
Love the kids in the back
lol 😂 quite on set. You think after 4years on earth they would just be quiet lol

Lol
I agree great platform to make your own. If u ever wana push it further I gota nice comp cut to help.

Picking up my new prodigy 4.25 tomorrow. Cant wait . Going to order the egw 1911 8lb recoil spring . Is this what u suggest. Also the egw recoil buffers. What lb main spring would you get? You didn't say in video. This is very cheap to do all this and sounds like it makes a big diffrence. This prodigy 4.25 will be my edc. Traded in my edc( sig p229 elite ) for it . Any help would appreicate it.
You gota tune it correctly but I run 17 or 19lb spring we offer this if interested

What’s the ideal pounds for the main spring?
Depending on what you’re after and how the rest is tuned I’d highly recommend you send it in for the proper work so it’s done before any issues arise.

I live in NJ where we have mag limits of 10 rounds. Any advantages to getting a Prodigy over a single-stack, 10 round mag 1911?
It’s a better gun honestly just get limiters

I must have gotten lucky with my 5 inch Prodigy, it's running great and I didn't have to break the bank. IMO they are putting a hurting on all those super high dollar guns for a lot less money. I competed in USPSA for a number of years so I have a good idea of what it takes to be a good gun. At a third of the price they are nit picking them to sale something you really don't need unless you a competing with the big boys.
There’s definitely some work I do to them that’s not that expensive that makes it away better running gun for years to come. www.SkipsGuns.com
This is why Glock will always be the best choice for reliability
What Magwell is that?
That’s a staccato but we also sell others

How much fitting is required for the Dawson mag well? Does the stock grip need to be modified or just the magwell itself?
I installed a Gen 2 Staccato magwell from Dawson Precision, I just had to sand off the bottom edge lines and it goes right on.
So skip, what spring combo do you recommend fur the 4.25?

@jtrawson442 hey if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Try a 8lb recoil and a 19 or 17 main
Damn I just got my 5 inch Prodigy I wish I would have seen your video before

Hey Skip, this is a message to all interested in your shops work...
For anyone wanting probably the best work that is not too cheap and by no means not as expensive as it can or could be more, Skip is the almost exact equivalent to Jeff Floyd of Floyd's Custom... Two entirely different shops two guys that will give you amazing fab work ... I just had my Hellcat Pro worked from Jeff and he's not a 2011 1911 guy... I took 1 look at Skips ports on his few works and he's a exact to Jeff Floyd... Anyone needs the impossible on 19 2011s Skip is it....

Anyone have the problem with your prodigy, where the slide doesn't always go completely forward when firing? I've been told to get a different spring but I have been having problems finding a spring that would fit?
I can fix all of that it’s not a new spring www.SkipsGuns.com
@@SkipsGunz Is it really the trigger spring, seems like that would be a nonstop thing if it was not every few rounds like what happens with mine, to the point I've to push the slide back into battery.
