The thing about comfort zone is so true. My dog was extremely anxious even in the neighbourhood because we moved into a bigger city. At first I let her choose the route of the walk. After a month of just moving around a block and coming back home she did improve. Then I pushed her a little bit to walk maybe a few houses down the other road. She still will often choose the route around the block, but when we have more time and I ask her to go another way or much farther she happily trots with me and does not pull back home.

Just last evening I was with a friend and we had just taken our dogs for a walk around the lake. I was handing out treats to the 4 dogs and asking for certain response but when I asked the smallest dog to "down" she refused every time and received no treat. 🤔 I finally figured out she was uncomfortable being so vulnerable with the other larger dogs crowded around. One was a goofy puppy and my small dog had been trampled by all the other dogs on the walk. I called out "reset", had the other dogs physically distanced and asked her again with instant compliance. The power of observation is a super power!😉

This topic is both very important to me and difficult because both of my really hate to have their nails trimmed. My younger silken (silken Windhound) at 2 yo needs to be sedated at the vet to get her nails trimmed. She was never quicked. And after my failed attempts I asked my pet sitter (also a groomer of 2+ years) to come to my house to work with her. The first few times my pup was ok, but after 4 visits, she was getting suspicious and had begun to growl and then attempt to bite. will be watching your next episode in a few minutes. 😊

Hello I am love your proven methods of dog training! I am new to dog training and recently had gotten my dog and nail trimming is disastrous! She screams like someone is trying to kill her at just a thought! Last vet visit I gave pills before my appointment and she was so groggy when I got there once they touched her feet it was like she never got sedation! They had to sedate her more and she still seamed to be unhappy! Veterinarian said she never seen a dog come out of sedation like this! I definitely am going to try your methods of overcoming this!
She is 8 month JackRussell and many other things to work on as we go! Thank you for all these opportunities to help our sweet girl !

Susan, love the idea of the journal. I have been struggling with certain aspects of improving performance accuracy and speed of obedience. After rewatching training steps, I realized I missed some steps so I had to go back and build up the missed steps to get the desired performance. My dog cant do what she has not learned. But she also gets anxious in certain environments to do certain things (back up) so we also worked on modifying our training space to build her confidence.

A hugely important podcast, aimed at the most fundamental basis for all of Susan Garrett's training philosophy. By encouraging trust these intelligent animals will tell us when (and when not) to proceed. We just have to *look* for the signs of what they are saying.
SG logically orders these layers of trust into different Consent categories.
In her gentle way Susan tells us that the basis of all training is to *never* break trust. In my less diplomatic way, I translate this into 'Don't ever force an action on a reluctant participant - because that is the definition of bullying.'
This podcast should be an early and key viewing for everything we want to do for our family fur-members... as in "This is Lesson-1: Create trust, look to see you have it, and never carry on without it."
Susan your advice is without peer. Thank you.

Susan the podcasts keep getting better. I hear what you are saying and understand. I’ve had the pleasure of living with six beautiful dogs throughout my life. Every one has been the best companion for me in their lifetime. This boy I have now a rescue has taught me more about dogs and their feelings that any of my previous dogs. Trouble is that I have felt that I am juggling so many balls, and I keep dropping them. The progress we are making is slow but still amazing, I still feel I am letting him down because my understanding just doesn’t grasp what his main needs are.

I have a problem with my dog where I feel like I do not get his consent and that is when he blocks on the street and I pull him to move. He blocks quite often: when we move toward the park but we do not enter park - he blocks and doesn't move, when we pass by a shop or cafe that we previously visited - he sits and doesn't move, if he sees a car that he thinks belongs to a friend of ours - he blocks. I did sometimes wait for 10-15 min for him to change his mind, I also tried to lure him, but nothing really works. So I have to confess, though I feel really bad I need to pull him sometimes. Any people with similar situations? How could be solved or eased? I really want it to be better both for me and my dog

Oh, Susan, I love every single one of your videos, it should be a common knowledge. I’m a member of few groups on dog training at Facebook and whenever I see that someone is struggling I’m sending them to your various podcasts. In my mind by doing so I’m helping not only owners but dogs who are often misunderstood. I think that the world would be much better place if everyone has seen your videos.
On my side I have a question regarding a consent when it comes to ears cleaning. I messed up and forced ears cleaning by pouring the solution to my then 3 month old Golden retriever puppy and since then he’s running from me whenever he sees or smells the bottle, my heart aches when I see him like this and I stopped cleaning his ears properly. Do you think it’s possible to reverse his association with the ears cleaning? Thank you so much for your time!

What happens when a dog REFUSES consent? My pup at 9 mo was scarred by the vet after bringing him in to shave between pads and ear mats. He came out with cuts everywhere and now grooming (and the trust I gained back was hard won)...is often a hard NO as he won't let us near certain body parts. He is about 1.5 years old, 120lbs and VERY strong. We now are bringing him in for his first sedation groom. I'm horrified. This is not only dangerous, but he has more coat than any of his breed I have owned; and he should be professionally clipped/groomed at LEAST monthly. We are going for a "start over", and hoping to build a relationship with a groomer willing to work with a giant PIA. I will never leave him again...I feel like I left him to the wolves! They broke his trust, and ours too as I haven't gained it all back (and he's SO TOUCHY) I don't know if I'll ever get it back.

Would this example be implied consent? My dog, a 4 year old spaniel will generally get into a shallow pool or natural body of water but never has swam but that's ok, I certainly don't force her. Earlier today though I wanted to give her a quick bath from her belly down after a weekend of running fastCat and the kiddy pool was overflowing with water because of all the rain we had gotten in the last 48 hours. She generally has not gone into the pool with more than about 2 inches of water or so in it. I had some treats with me and a clicker. I set her down near the pool and she reached out her paw towards getting in it. I clicked and treated. I did this several times as she got more and more of her paw into the water each time and I would click and reward. It was only the 5th time that she completely got in and then proceeded to allow me to soap up her legs and give her that quick bath without struggling it trying to get out. I was very proud of her☺️

This is SO helpful, thank you Susan! I have a question about the strategy of keeping the dog away from distractions/other reinforcement when they see more value in something other than what I want him to do. My Aussie pup is 4 months old. He is SO good here at home and in our yard, but when we get around other puppies, it's really hard for him to do anything that he normally does with ease -- like sit and wait for a door/gate to open, or come to me when he's playing off leash. I understand that it's best to rehearse the desired behavior while gradually increasing distractions. But my puppy also needs to be socialized, and it's good for him to play with another dog (for bite inhibition among other things). If I wait until he has gradually been distant from other dogs, then closer, over a period of weeks, he will miss out on weeks of critical socialization. Any tips for how best to train him when he's around another puppy? Or should I just keep the training to the bare minimum, over override consent when it's necessary to pull him out to go home, even if he sees more value in staying and playing, barking etc.? THANK YOU!! P.S. I am in Recallers, currently working through Modules 2 and 3.

    • @kensithedog2053
      @kensithedog2053 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know I'm not Susan, (😂) but have you tried using the puppies as a reward? Like keep him a ways away, and try to get him to look at you, and then once he does, release him. And after several repetitions, once he gets that, have him sit first, and so on.
And of course also, you're right, you can't expect stellar obedience just yet in that situation 🤷‍♀️

@@kensithedog2053 I like this idea, but not sure how to implement it. As of now his best options are either going to other people's yards or they come to our yard, so we are all of a sudden in puppyville with no distance... but I hear you on the general approach!

@@TheLucybme I totally get it. The puppy struggle is real 😂 What I did with my dog was get the other person to leash their dog or keep them in a stay until I was ready to release, but I totally get that that's not always possible. I'm sure that you'll get better help on recallers, I'm no pro🙂. Good luck with your puppy, I'm sure he'll do great! 🙂 (Aussies are awesome)

How early do you let puppies off-lead? I know some people say that you shouldn't until they're an adult, but This is clearly not an adult.

Hi Ryan, there are a few podcasts that can help, here's episode #132 which is about creating a positive CER and your dog’s buy-in: th-cam.com/video/7CoJfMRFPSM/w-d-xo.html, and episode #107 that is specific for nail trimming: th-cam.com/video/JIPxgReFk58/w-d-xo.html. Happy training!

This is a year old video so I don’t know if you are still looking at comment. I need help. I have 5 year old rescue border collie mix. I have only had him for two months. In the first week I was able to trim his nails but now he grabs my arm every time I try to trim his nails. I have to brush very slow and gentle in order to brush him. He has threatened to bite when being brushed. He refused to let me bathe him when covered in mud. I don’t know much of his history and need direction on how to get him to let me do these things.

IM IN GAME ON IMPLIED CONSENT

  • @judithmurray9611

I would be interested in how to get implied consent for injections. Daisy gets an allergy shot monthly. I usually wait until she is in her chair resting, bring a meat ball and the injection. Then have to talk to her for a while in order to get the shot in her. She does the lying on her side for tummy checks (haven't done nails yet), and ear meds. Which I guess she gives implied consent for if you count her trying to pull her head away, but does not try and get up. I haven't tried the injection in this position because I didn't want her to refuse to go into it for other things, and because giving her the injection (in the back of the neck) would be very awkward.
