This was GREAT. It was nice to have someone like you, Tim, who knows more than me (because I know NOTHING) about drumming talk about the difficulty of it. Thank you!

Their manager made her stop playing and only sing. She was NOT happy -- since she was really, really shy. She liked being in the back playing the drums -- but that voice... too good.
The truth is that Karen was suffering from anorexia, which eventually was the cause of her death on Feb 4th 1983 at the age of 32. She had to stop playing drums because she became too weak to finish a set.
Yes she was an amazing lady and a significant part of my childhood and desires to start singing. Sadly, as with so many, she was gone too soon. Her music will never fade. Thanks for sharing this Tim & Fred!

Check out the percussionist Evelyn Glennie. She plays just about anything that can be struck, including flower pots! The amazing bit is that she became profoundly deaf at about 12 years old so cannot actually hear what she's playing, just feels the vibrations. Mostly classical music but lots of videos on TH-cam.
I totally applaud you guys for giving Karen so much credit for her drumming talent. I grew up with Karen and she's one of my inspirations as a contralto singer but only later in my childhood discovered her drumming ability. I think the reason it was so easy for her to sing while drumming was because singing well came so effortlessly for her so that she could focus on the the rhythm and beat (percussion). Sheila E is also phenomenal!
Can't get enough of you two! Loved this, so many clips I've never seen, and I grew up listening/loving The Carpenters. Keep up the great work and appreciating the different genres of music.
I was listening yesterday to Josh Groban's recent cover of that beautiful song...and it crossed my mind how wonderful it would have been to hear Karen Carpenter sing it...

Great to see young people like you value the extraordinary artistry of the Carpenters. Karen's vocal and drumming abilities were off the charts. And to do both simultaneously so superbly is incredible. She makes it look effortless, and it is not!
Thank you for appreciating her talent reminds me of the line made famous by cartoonist Bob Thaves in a 1982 talking about Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire (if you don't know them they are very famous dancers from old films who were known for exacting and intricate dances made to seem effortless): "Sure he was great, but don’t forget Ginger Rogers did everything he did backwards…and in high heels!"
