Wish they were made in the US. I've made a pledge to myself not to buy any Chinese stuff if I can help it. Just bought some Made in USA garden tools made by Rogue. Good stuff.
Hard to find things like this that are made in the USA now. I am having serious problems with a Drone I recently purchased from a Chinese company with very bad support for a defective item and wish american companies would start manufacturing more consumer goods. Thanks for watching.
John Harris. I totally agree. I was already feeling that way, but now it’s for certain. I’ll make a big effort to find items that are NOT china made. That government is evil and the root cause of this global pandemic.
99% of the computers and phones that people watch these videos on are made in China and they are critical to infrastructure so they should go first. Things like this are the last items that people should worry about as they are not required and contain zero technology that provides good jobs. The whole global mentality has gotten us into this situation and it's not going away with the current political climate.
I understand the I buy is mostly Chinese components. It's a shame previous administrations pushed manufacturers off shore. From an article I recently read the Chinese currency may overtake the USA dollar as the currency of the world the way China has tied itself into economies of all countries in the world.
I got 4 of these for my birthday last year , built and filled them myself ( stroke survivor with asthma)moved and emptied them one at a time with 5 gallon buckets and disassembled and moved them to my new place,in the process of reassembling slowly but they held up and moved easily .
Wow, that's a lot of hard work. Great to hear they stood up to a move. It's amazing what the love of gardening can get people to do. Thanks for watching.
They look great and as always a great review! I tell you I'm gonna have to pass on these as they are manufactured in China. I'll go with the wood. I'm doing my best to ween myself off Chinese made products and buy American when I can. Would be nice to see Northern have them made in the states!
I wish I could have found other affordable beds that were made in the USA but I couldn't. I tried contacting companies to find someone interested in making the aluminum beds like all my others but none had any interest. wish I had cedar or locust trees available as I would have sawn my own beds. These were my best solution especially being able to have them delivered with the shelter in place order we have been under for weeks. I am now trying to get support for a defective drone that was purchased from China and about done with buying direct. Thanks for watching.
Excellent idea to buy USA first, if possible. Next step which these beds help with, eat home grown produce not imports. It's better for you and you know what went into them, soil to table🌿
I just came across your video. These beds were recommended via Bumblebee Junction. I just built two of these and will be filling them tomorrow! Yes, they are more expensive then building out of wood but these will last FOREVER. Lower cost over time! I really like how you assembled them. I did them on the ground, which after viewing this was pretty stupid! I'll remember that when I get more of these for next year. I also like the fact that they are 3x6 because my 5'2" wife can easily reach into the center of the bed without an issue! I wound up with extra screw and nut with each of my beds. One thing about the bottom of the beds. No need to use plastic. Line the bottoms with cardboard. Worms love it and it will kill everything underneath it. If you have issues with ground hogs you can put down some wire fencing too.
They definitely are nice and hopefully will last long. There is no plastic under the beds, it's just under the gravel and I just filled the gaps left by the bed size difference. I actually ordered a couple more to make everything match. Happy gardening. Thanks for watching.
These look great in the garden. Easy to set up and inexpensive. We have been using concrete blocks to make raised beds but they are heavy and not as nice looking, although they are inexpensive if you buy full pallets and have them delivered. My wife and I enjoy all your videos, the subject material and the way they are produced (voice over and no music). Thank you so much, and hope you have a nice garden this year.
Thanks. Concrete blocks work great also but around here they are very expensive plus they can wick moisture from the soil around the edges. These are a nice solution and I think they will last longer then untreated wood. Working alone it's the easiest way for me to make understandable videos. Thanks for watching.

I spent a couple days searching for something like these also and decided they were the best affordable option for my subscribers. I was lucky Northern tool was interested in having a couple videos made about them. I am going to buy a couple more next year also. Good luck with your garden and stay safe. Thanks for watching.
I am surprised the uv didn't yellow and crack it. I didn't like how all the edges were frayed and it's definitely work to remove it. Thanks for watching.
Just watch this years videos and you will see they are still like new. They are way too expensive now though with recent price increases. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 just got them in stock and I ordered more. Different manufacturer. No plastic coating to peel off, and no middle braces.
We bought one of these beds a few months ago along with an 4x4 Urban Gardener from TSC. Both are holding up very well, and look good, but the TSC bed seems to be sturdier.
I looked at beds in Tractor supply last year and they were very expensive $89 compared to $49 for these so they should be sturdier. I think these should last a long time for my needs. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for another wonderfully thorough review. If I decide to order these I will now EXACTLY what to expect, thanks to you! That top edge looks thin enough to be a little too sharp for comfort. Too bad they didn't make the width four feet instead of three. I'm surprised they stayed so square. Do they offer an option to join the beds to make longer beds or taller beds? I LOVE the idea of just putting one foot of plastic under the edge. The finished product looks very neat and clean. Well, finally, your channel gives a little back once in a while. I wonder why you don't you set up as many affiliate links as possible? It costs money to make all your videos. Everyone that watches your channel KNOWS that you have the highest integrity and will always be fair, honest, and thoughtful in any review that you do. My Spring here looks exactly like yours. My garlic is the same size and I'm still waiting for daffodil flowers. Winds have been horrific -- making it too cold and difficult to work outside. Maybe it will dry out some of our mud eventually. This time of year I really envy gardeners further south.
Thanks. I think the size of these beds is limited by the material thickness. Luckily they had the same interior dimensions as my old beds so there wasn't much patching up required. I think they should last quite a while if I don't go wild with the pitchfork. I like the look and extra 4 inches of depth. Just can't wait to be able to go out and pick up compost and pea gravel to finish up the area. I am only set up for Amazon links and try to place them if I use an item the video. I have to take time to set up an Amazon storefront someday. I was getting ready to order these beds and decided to contact Northern tool first and was amazed how fast they shipped them out for a video. We have been wet with constant high winds that can make it tough to work outside but spring is right around the corner according to the number of birds we are seeing lately. It's unbelievable how this Corona virus is affecting everyone's life now and I pray that a vaccination isn't far off so we all can all get back to not living in fear. Stay safe and think spring. Thanks for watching.
They look flimsy until they are filled then they stiffen right up. I really like them and like that they are 4 inches deeper then my old beds. With all the people starting gardens this year I bet they sell out fast just like all the seeds did. Thanks for watching.
Stainless pop rivets with backup washers would probably would good. I will definitely let everyone know if there are any problems. Thanks for watching.
I've watched a number of your vids, I was just wondering, would leaving the plastic film on the galvanized metal been detrimental? Just asking. They do look good.
It would start peeling and possibly bake on from the sun and look really bad in my mind. If it was on the inside I would have left it. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 That was my concern. I left some of it on but will likely peel it off once everything is filled with soil. I think it will actually be easier to do once assembled and filled.
Great video! Question: do you think leaving the plastic coating on the parts would help it last longer? I figure turn the plastic coated sides to the inside of the planter.
You can't turn it to the inside. I think it would trap moisture and cause more problems in the long run plus don't know if its food safe and would leach chemicals into the soil. Thanks for watching.
The chickweed is edible. It is a good addition to salads or used as a sandwich green. Your conditions seem to be good for it. Don’t fight it, enjoy it.
Hi I’m wondering if there is a way to elevate these on legs so that I don’t have to kneel or do a lot of bending over , I have arthritis in my knees and a back that likes to attack me whenever I do a little work.
No, there is no bottom in them. You would have to build a very strong table to put them on. There are some types that are built on legs that would be better for your needs. Thanks for watching.
If it was on the inside I would have left it but wonder if it's food grade. Some comments here say people just left it on so that could be an option if you don't mind dealing with it later. Thanks for watching.
I am going to order a couple more myself now that Isee how nice they work. You have quite a bit of work ahead of you to get them all set up and filled. Happy gardening. Thanks for watching.
We bought three on your advice .. How much compost/ topsoild do you say it will it take to fill just one .. We live in WI so our climate is similiar to yours .. Nice editing job !!!
6 x 3 x1 = 18 cu ft to the top but they are slightly smaller so 2 cubic yards should fill 3. I just bought 2 more also and figured that I would shrink down the size of the green house I am planning for the far end to squeeze in more beds. Can't believe they are calling for snow on Thursday here. Thanks for watching.
Ive been thinking of making something like this. I clicked the link "This item is not currently available." But, the 8x3 is available for ~$70.+ shipping ( ship. to my area is $26.) In my opinion, it seems to be a good price.
I haven't seen that one. All the different sizes seem to sell out very quickly this year with all the people starting to garden. I bought more of these and signed up for the advantage program that gives me free shipping for a year for a little more then the shicost. Thanks for watching.
As always, a great video about something relatively simple. But, your videos are always great and interesting. Thank you! Hope that they work out for you. Also hope that you and your family stay healthy. Sincerely, Rod Ps, how old were the beds that they replaced and what kind of wood were they?
Thanks. Just trying to give others an idea of what they will experience if they decide to buy an item. Hopefully we all will make it through this pandemic and get back to normal life in the near future. Stay safe. Thanks for watching.
The puppies go to the garden with me. And once in a while a wrestling match breaks out. Is there any chance of getting cut on the edges? Your channel is always so enjoyable!
They are just happy the snow is finally gone and looking for something nasty to roll in 😯. The edges are rolled over and the corner pieces are the only place you could possibly get cut if you fell on it. Once they are assembled all the sharp corners are hidden. Thanks for watching.
I originally was looking for locust to rebuild them and these cost less then just the wood would have. I was surprised how they stiffened up when filled. Thanks for watching.
Read the material data sheets from the manufacturer for any coatings you are thinking of using. A name brand red oxide primer has an MDS sheet that lists "may cause genetic defects" and "may cause cancer" and "11% of the mixture consists of ingredient(s) of unknown acute toxicity." Not something i'd want surrounding my plants. If you are concerned about rusting out, i'd add some kind of liner to keep the soil away from the metal (epdm, rpe, etc), go with a heavier gauge sheeting if you can, or some kind of food grade coating suitable for metal... though that will likely be $$$.
They look pretty flimsy and the sharp corners I not something I care to deal with...I'll stay with the wood ones which also give me the flexibility of adding more height, but I guess free beds is better than nothing.
Not flimsy when filled and no sharp corners after assembled. I am going to purchase more because I like the looks. I really like them . Thanks for watching.
Be very careful with Chinese Galvanized steel. We tested Gal steel in Acidic soil over a 12 months period @ uni. Australian made Galvanized steel showed no contaminants, not even zinc over that time period but the cheap Chinese Gal/steel had zinc and shockingly high levels of lead scary stuff. More testing found the Chinese metal had very high levels of lead in the zinc coating on its gal steel. I would not be using it for plants that I would be eating that's for sure. When it comes to Chinese made or grown It's very easy do not eat or use anything from China in your food prep full spot. It's all about profit they do not give a shit about safety.
How long ago was that. From what I understand lead is no longer used in the Chinese finishes and zinc is the only component that leaches into the soil. I'll see if there's a spec for the finish. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 It was 9yrs ago. But if you believe China is doing what they say they are than your sir are why to gullible. I will not say who I now work for but I will say we refuse 1000's of tons of food every year entry into Australia as we find pesticide residues, pathogens and the list goes on way higher than our standards. It's in stark contrast to what they (Chinese) have listed in their documents. The sad part is we only get to test a very small amount of what comes in so a huge amount gets passed with no testing at all and a very disturbing part of this is the products we refuse do not get destroyed or sent back to its origin but send on to another country normally one with fewer restrictions. One I managed to see firsthand was sent on to the Philippines. Sadly red tape means they have no idea it failed entry into Australia not that it would matter in countries with high corruption anyway. Because of my work and having my eyes opened to what's really going on my family and I now follow an organic plant-based whole food diet we grow a lot of it ourselves but everything we eat is grown in Australia is grown organically and in most cases locally. We never eat out and very rarely buy anything that comes in packaging. I hope this helps anybody reading this to what's really happening out there.
I guess they must have sold out. I have seen comments from many that have bought them. I'll check with my contact to see if more are on the way. Thanks for watching.
One more question ... My wife asked me why take the plastic off? ... i thought before i answered! .. and said ... i don't know .. i am thinking more often now before opening up my mouth.- things you learn after 46 years of marriage! ...So.. Why remove the plastic is a good question .. what do you think?
It's just for protection during manufacturing and shipping. It's all frayed at the bends and would eventually peel off and not knowing what its made from I didn't want it near the plants. On the other hand I see comments from some that have left it on. Thanks for watching.
Hey you got a pretty good pay day getting them for free. I see they cost 80 bucks and if you got 6 that's over 500 dollars you saved. Too bad you told the world so you gotta pay the tax man :'(
They are $49.00 each now, I just bought more. The taxman always gets a cut , that's why I told the last commenter nothing is free. Thanks for watching.
As far as the Chinese question is concerned I think a lot of the problem is us and another culprit is American greedy companies. Most Americans won't pay the price for USA made products. We say we want Made in America but we buy the cheaper products. We won't support decent wages for American workers. We want American made products at Chinese prices. Those people who are building American made products want a decent wage too. And because we buy the cheapest prices American companies go looking for a cheaper way to build things. Cheap Chinese labor. One thing that really bothers me is that critical industries are located in China, like our pharmaceuticals. Your pills are probably made in China. There was a time when almost everything we bought was made in America. So how did we afford it?
That's all the results of previous trade deals allowing that train of thought. Was a time when made in America ment a higher grade product but that is no longer true as many companies have shifted technology and machinery there for the cheap labor as you say but it's mainly to avoid taxes so it's not going to be easy to change. This pandemic may be a good starting point if our tax system is restructured. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Good point. A while back I was looking for a cordless drill and I was interested in the DeWalt line. I noticed they had two tools that were very similar but significantly different prices. The higher priced one had an American flag noticeably printed on the box and I thought " Oh, that is American made" and almost bought it. Then I read the description where it said assembled in America with globally sourced parts. So assembled in America with foreign ( Chinese ) parts ? I passed and bought a Milwaukee who is owned by a Chinese company based in Hong Kong.
Just about everything is made in China now. Most likely the device you watched this on is from or has components from China. Our government officials have caused this over the last 20 years. Thanks for watching.
I thought of a good idea for you ... masking a mask for men with long beards .. went out today to vote and saw me with the mask on in a reflection and i looked like a head of hair with a softball in it !... I don't think the beard filters out the virus particles very good with the mask on either. ... i could feel my breath going out through my beard, rather that through the mask. ... Any ideas?
I agree. The moisture from breathing gets caught in my beard with a mask on and creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. After 6 weeks of isolation we have to head out the end of this week to pick up milk, eggs, and tp. I will look the same as you did. The only other option seems to be a trend positive pressure face shield that costs $400. Thanks for watching.
I'm guessing you don't own a computer, smartphone, or smart TV then. I am very happy with them and think they will last a long time. Thanks for watching.
Try to find some that are made in the USA and affordable. I looked. Steel is 100% recyclable and used over and over. Wood works good also. I have many subscribers that like to see items they can just buy and assemble so I thought these are a great option for them. Thanks for watching.
Nothing is actually free. I am learning that advertising is very expensive for companies and social media is the lowest cost effective method many use. I usually make more in the end by buying from Amazon and using their affiliate links. I invest over 40 hours a week in my channel and the little I make goes right back into it. Do you work everyday for free and zero benefits? You have no idea. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 @Daryl Pressel THEY ARE NOT "FREE STUFF." He has exchanged his review skills and produced a video that could sell a lot of product for the manufacturer. Daryl, do you realize what it takes to make a video of this type? Time, patience and energy. He has to get his lights out, set them up, set up the camera, sound, and the tripods. Get the angles all correct. Every time he does something different, he has to move the camera and lights. Then the editing begins. The voice-over is time consuming too. Then he has to get it all ready to upload to TH-cam. He has to stay informed of all the TH-cam rules that are always changing and more. *It is a HUGE deal to make videos of this quality.* I didn't mention the investment in dollars for all the equipment. The investment is ENERGY is tremendous. *EVERY single project takes FAR longer to do.* It is really a labor of love. I have been following this channel for years now. The quality of filming and content is exceptional. It is about time he gets some useful products to review. The manufacturer gets TREMENDOUS quailty advertising for a mere pittance. It cost them almost nothing to send those beds. In exchange, they get the EXACT micro targeted audience they want for the product they sell.
Mary every sponsored video I usually loose a handful of subscribers that feel like Daryl immediately after posting and it doesn't bother me because they have never posted a video and have no idea what goes into it. The plus side is I gain a couple hundred subscribers that are interested in learning new things that are a perfect fit for my channel that I enjoy making videos for.
Daryl ... it is evedent you have never spent all the time in planning out a video project, money to buy the equipment and the software to edit the video. Then the hours of working on the project: moving cameras into the proper position for the shot, then the hours of editing and encoding to the computer and uploading to TH-cam... then you don't know what it takes Darlin Pressel ... think about it before making statements like that ?

I am surprised the uv didn't yellow and crack it. I didn't like how all the edges were frayed and it's definitely work to remove it. Thanks for watching.
Me too! Left the plastic and after 2 years, they still look ok. We are zone 5b ... so cold winters and hot summers.
I’ve made a start on peeling my galvanised beds plastic was tempted to just leave it on
Guess you could. I just bought 5 more to peel. Thanks for watching.
Man those look great. I really like your work ethic. Great stuff. Really good content
Thanks. They really are nice. I was surprised how they stiffened up when filled. Thanks for watching.
Hello,
Do you have an update of how the galvanized beds held up. Is there any rusting or anything after 3 yrs?
Just watch this years videos and you will see they are still like new. They are way too expensive now though with recent price increases. Thanks for watching.
I ordered some because of this review. I was looking for some beds and the price was right. Thanks for sharing.
I just ordered another 2 myself. They are perfect for my needs and should last quite a while if I am careful. Hope you like them. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Several months later, they are awesome. I wish I would have bought 4 more, they are still sold out.
Very nice! Can’t wait to see the results.
They should work out great and I like how they look. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the vid review. I have been on the fence about these. But after seeing your vid I went and ordered 2 for myself! Thanks again ! PAp
They look flimsy until they are filled then they stiffen right up. I really like them and like that they are 4 inches deeper then my old beds. With all the people starting gardens this year I bet they sell out fast just like all the seeds did. Thanks for watching.
I wonder how long pop-rivets would hold up. I like to use them for things like this. Looks great. Keep us posted how well they work out.
I could not into the provided website. Please tell me Where you get this product, and how much it cost? Thanks.
I just checked with northern tool and they are completely sold out with no more on order right now. Thanks for watching.
I definitely can't get rid of it. Thanks for watching.
I wonder if you could use wooden stakes and put 2 to 4 on each side and screw them into the walls of the beds instead of the cross bars.
If the center bars bother you like I said I would look for a different bed. Thanks for watching.
My husband is making our raised beds. Do you have plastic under the bed too?
No,just under the gravel. You want good drainage and room for roots. Thanks for watching.
Is the plastic coating suppose to be on the inside of the garden box to protect the metal from the soil. what is your thought on this. Good videos.
If it was on the inside I would have left it but wonder if it's food grade. Some comments here say people just left it on so that could be an option if you don't mind dealing with it later. Thanks for watching.
Can you stack them on top of each other making the sides higher? I've had 3 Total Knee Replacements and a bad back so can't bend over! Thanks!
No you can't. You should look for taller ones. Thanks for watching.
I was thinking of the same.
Thanks for video, I just ordered 8 beds
How much soil does it take to fill the bed?
6 x 3 x1 = 18 cubic feet to the top. About 2/3 of a cubic yard. Thanks for watching.
look great nice work!!
Thanks for watching.
Excellent video!
Thanks for watching.
Wow, purchased 2 of these a couple months ago didn't even realize it had plastic on them. I'm going to blame it on putting them together at dusk.
I see some have left it on so it may not matter. Thanks for watching.
Leaving that on could be more beneficial, as a weather barrier, and rust protection
It could also leach chemicals into the surrounding soil. Galvanization doesn't usually need extra protection..
Thank you for such an informative video. 👍
Thanks for watching.
Time for a nap. :) My dad is a napper too.
The first couple days outside in the spring are tiring. Thanks for watching.
Could you leave the plastic on and let the weather work it off over time?
Probably would but it would look really bad. It may come off a little easier if it's warmer Though. Thanks for watching.
as always great review
These are really nice and easy to assemble once you get the plastic off. I will probably buy a couple more in the future. Thanks for watching.
As always, a great video about something relatively simple.
But, your videos are always great and interesting. Thank you!
Hope that they work out for you.
Also hope that you and your family stay healthy.
Sincerely,
Rod
Ps, how old were the beds that they replaced and what kind of wood were they?
Thanks. Just trying to give others an idea of what they will experience if they decide to buy an item. Hopefully we all will make it through this pandemic and get back to normal life in the near future. Stay safe. Thanks for watching.
What size was that.
3 ft x6 ft x 1 ft Beds. Thanks forwatching.
I kn you root a lot of plants but I cant find sweet potato slips anywhere
Seeds seem to be sold out everywhere also. Many people starting gardens this year. Thanks for watching.
How are these holding up today?
Still like new. I bought a couple more last year. The price has recently doubled so they are pricey now.
They don't look that bad :-) Stay safe
Thanks for watching
You’re supposed to leave the plastic to protect the galvanized steel and make it last longer
Galvanized steel does not need protection. Thanks for watching.
awesome... and not that expensive
I originally was looking for locust to rebuild them and these cost less then just the wood would have. I was surprised how they stiffened up when filled. Thanks for watching.
Paint the inside with epoxy red oxide primer and the metal will last longer.
That's a good idea. Thanks for wtching.
I wish they made this in 4'x8'
I think you would need much heavier material to go that big. Thanks for watching.
Don’t galvanize rust???
It does not if properly done. Thanks for watching.
I'm surprised they aren't produce in a hard plastic
That wouldn't last long. You can get plastic ones with thicker material Thanks for watching.
Followed the link... Item no longer available.
I guess they must have sold out. I have seen comments from many that have bought them. I'll check with my contact to see if more are on the way. Thanks for watching.
I checked with northern tool and they are sold out now.
Those are grt
They are very nice. Thanks for watching.
Are you sure you supposed to remove the plastic. I would've left it on.. haha
I see where some have. Thanks for watching.
Why couldn’t you just leave the plastic on?
Some people have. Thanks for watching.
YOU WERENT SUPPOSED TO PEEL THE PLASTIC OFF!!
Yes you are supposed to peel it. Thanks for watching.
Hair dryer would have made it easier to come off.
Thanks for watching
Made in China!! You can make your own!
I did the first time and they didn't last long. Thanks for watching.
looks good but 0:38 Made in China = deal breaker
I'll buy MADE IN THE USA only. They look flimsy as everything made in China. Hopefully the days of " made in China" would come to an end soon .
I'm guessing you don't own a computer, smartphone, or smart TV then. I am very happy with them and think they will last a long time. Thanks for watching.
NOPE. As soon as I saw MADE IN CHINA, you lost me. At least the wood that I buy is from USA and is recyclable and environmentally safe.
Try to find some that are made in the USA and affordable. I looked. Steel is 100% recyclable and used over and over. Wood works good also. I have many subscribers that like to see items they can just buy and assemble so I thought these are a great option for them. Thanks for watching.
Do you ever feel guilty for asking for soo much free stuff ??
