    Awww, typical wet welcome to Washington! My family lives in Washington, and apparently, whenever my aunt from California used to visit, she said we would always tell her, "you juuuust missed it!" [the good weather]. But if you're lucky enough to see Washington on a sunny day, you'll see all the beauty it has to offer! All the rain makes it extra gorgeous. ~~You just missed it! 💚

    Hi Mari, thanks for sharing another awesome video. You have certainly seen some great scenery on your trip. Days 138 to 139 had to be the fastest night ever. You had only said goodnight and as I was just starting to dose off it was morning!!! Love the mountain scenery there. Anyway, take care. Robert.

    Outstanding video.
    You talking about the wet conditions as you hiked was so very real...that hikers by the time Washington is reached can deal with any discomforts on trail.
    Stay healthy & happy ❤ ✌ 👣

    6pm lunch! That's even worse that my weird mealtimes when I'm on holiday. I'm so envious of all that rain because we're still on level 4 water restrictions here in the Waikato. Wet tents and sleeping bags aren't fun and I hope you got some sunny weather to dry stuff out. The feeling of 'growing mushrooms' as well as having stinky clothes isn't fun either. I enjoyed your videos when you posted on trail, but now that they're coming out weekly and when the trails have been closed, they are even more special. Thanks Mari and stay well.

    I'm not sure if this question had already been addressed, but I'm really curious about the physical changes that occurred while hiking everyday like this. Did you gradually notice your muscles getting stronger and more able to handle longer, more strenuous hikes? At what point if any did you really have that moment when you can feel your body adapting to this new pace? Thanks and as always your content is highly appreciated.

    Love watching these! I am in Kuala Lumpur right now, but the U.S. Embassy has contacted me and advised me to evacuate back to America immediately, by any means possible. They cited the possibility of months more of lock-downs and other problems. I am unable to ride out the situation here in Malaysia. The borders here are closed to all foreigners and the immigration offices are closed indefinitely. This whole virus issue has destroyed my long-term travel plans that I've worked on for years to make a reality. First my savings and source of income was wiped out by the crazy market volatility. Then all the lock-downs, border closures and limited access to food, paralyzed me. So in 3 days, I get to fly back to the U.S. during the worst possible time to travel. When I get back to a shutdown Las Vegas, I have no apartment, no vehicle and no job. I am living off nearly maxed credit cards and have no idea what will happen. The next several months are going to be hell, if not the end of me. I am thankful that I made it 14 months and had many once in a lifetime experiences before all this happened, but it is a bitter ending. Hope everyone else is doing ok. Cheers!

    Very nice video. Congrats on making it to WA. Nice ponchos. Do they snap together to make a tarp? Are there grommets at the corners? A poncho or two can be setup with a rope to provide shelter at the end of the tent or over the tent. Did you build fires to dry out yourselves and your gear? Good Luck, Rick

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! We used them as a tarp a couple of times. We didn’t build any fires - I don’t think there was any dry wood around!

    • @richardross7219
      @richardross7219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mari.johnson I have really enjoyed your videos. As a Boy Scout in the 1960s, I was taught how to build a fire in the rain. First step was setting up my poncho over the place I wanted to build the fire. Second was collecting wood that was dead and barkless that was hung up in trees. That is usually the dryest wood. Make a stockpile under your poncho/tarp. With a sharp knife peel the wet outer wood off of the sticks to get down to dry wood. I peeled the chips into a pile that would be the base for the fire. Sticks that were fairly dry would be carved into fuzz sticks. The outer layer is thinly peeled but not detached from the stick. The sticks are set up in a teepee style. I always carried some white birch bark in a waterproof container to start the fire. You can carry a tealight candle to hold under some tinder to dry and ignite it. Save the candle and enjoy your fire. Once it gets going the partly wet barkless wood will quickly dry to burn too. If you do the CDT, woodcraft skills become more important because you are farther from civilization. Good Luck, Rick

      @@mari.johnson For instructions on how to build a fire in wet weather, I recommend John Muir's "Travels in Alaska." In chapter 2, "Alexander Archipelago and the Home I Found in Alaska," he describes building a fire in a downpour on a wet night in Wrangell. (pg 18 in the Sierra Club Books reprint edition of, I think, 1988)

    You are in this video in the part of the world where I grew up. I live in CA now which is a beautiful and diverse state. But I think the Columbia river gorge one of the most beautiful places on earth. Timberline lodge is where my parents honeymooned. If you ever get to have a few days in that area, historic highway 30 has dozens of waterfalls. Those creeks you were crossing were the beginnings of all those gorgeous falls. Mount hood, Mount St. Helens and Mt Adams are so lovely. Sometimes on a clear day you can even see Rainier from there. I’m glad you got to see and experience Portland and it’s awesome food scene. And I’m sure WA gave you lots of chances to try out the ponchos. I grew up there. It’s just rainy. At least I hope it wasn’t bitingly cold yet. Nothing like the cold, windy chill of WA rain. But it makes the warm cup of food or drink the more comforting. And a warm shower some place even more exciting. Honestly the views there are gorgeous in the rain too because the green is more intense and makes the blue sky views even more spectacular. Look forward to your last few posts of the state I grew up camping and hiking in 😊

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re lucky to have grown up in such beautiful areas! I’d love to go back one day and do more hiking around there (and hopefully not in the rain!) ❤️

    • @kellyjohnson3617
      @kellyjohnson3617 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you should go back. Best time of year tends to be early to mid September but it still rains. Lol. From Mt Adams Wilderness to the Northern Cascades it is just breath taking. On four mountain days( days where you can see four mountains at the same time) it’s glorious. But sometimes while it’s raining you take a chance and go out and the clouds part and you are treated to a sight no one else gets to see cuz you are above the clouds. And time just seems to stop cuz everyone is stunned by what’s happening in the moment. Once it was pouring and it was the last time I got to see my dad actually still able to walk cuz he was so riddled with bone cancer, and he was determined to drive up to Mt St Helens. It was mid sept and there had been no snow in it the week before. Today and the whole week before it had rained. So of course we drive up in the pouring rain and get up there and no one is there. It’s right before the visitor center was closing. He had never been to the visitor center yet since it had opened. We went and watched the film. No one else was there but the rangers. We step out of the screening room and my dad is telling the rangers about how our family used to camp at the mountain before it blew. The rangers were playing him with questions cuz most were too young to remember it any other way. Suddenly the clouds parted and all the rangers gasped. The mountain was revealed draped in heavy snow with blue sky all around its top and clouds at its base. No one but us right there got that show. He lived across the river from the mountain but it was his first time on it in years (and as it turned out last time) and he got treated to that. In the mountain, surrounded by fellow mountain lovers, sharing his knowledge. And what a view. The mountains of WA bring up such good memories for me. I don’t live far from the sierras but the cascades and especially at Helens are my mountains 😊❤️
