Extreamely misleading CTC. 1) DMK has been sounding the bugle against Modi Govt for Katchatheevu despite Stalin's father complacent in the "sale" of the island. 2) The land swap with Bangladesh was ratified in the parliament. No such procedures were followed in case of Katchathhevu. 3) What about the 200 nautical miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) that could have come withe island? Overall, a hurried episode with very little facts and research. Expect better standards from thePrint.

For Gupta ji, whenever Congress is in the wrong (which is a lot), everything is complex & nuanced. But when it comes to BJP, he's very clear in BJP's criticism, at every opportunity. He is too biased now to report fairly & in a balanced way on Indian politics. The island can be two football fields size, that does not matter. What matters is that it gives Territorial sea zone extending 12 nautical miles from the island baseline & another contiguous zone the area extending 24 nm. from the baseline. Thats why China builds small artificial islands, it allows you to extend your border way beyond & corner fishing territories. Now the Indian Tamils fishermen get arrested because of this cowardice of the Congress corrupt politicians. Gupta ji, however, will never mention that.

If Indian fisherman want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Why does India has to disrupt peace with all it's neighbouring countries, and now the latest is with Sri Lanka at a time Sri Lankan-Indian diplomacy has improved. According to a recent news article as of 2024 India still remains unresponsive to the request by Sri Lanka to allow an innocent passage through the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for its fishermen to enter the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka had made this request when President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India in 2023. The Indian route will help Lankan fishermen cut down the total distance by 400 nautical miles. Currently, they have to take a longer route via Negombo, Dikovita, Beruwala and Matara (areas in Sri Lanka) around the Maldives. @@sky0007fall You've a British point of view about Hypotheticals about what we now call INDIA. Yes there would have been no India but a Hindustan under a Hindustani Ruler. Had the British not conquered these princely states from 1757 to 1857, the Marathas could have united Hindustan. If not the Marathas, Ranjit Singh or so many other powerful Hindustani kings who came but were eventually defeated by the British. How do we know? We can only speculate, but it would have been OUR DESTINY under our control because its OUR HOME. "We" decide about the future of "our home" not a foreign power,. Thats what freedom, sovereignty & liberty means. Just like the Chinese did, or Japanese did in Asia & Russia did. We may have had our shares of revolutions & internal wars of unity & break-ups or not, or may be a new Emperor who would have created Akhand Bharat or modern Hindustan who adapted to Industrial Revolution & Capitalism in our own way, but we will never know., will we? Because we were conquered, subjugated, divided, westernized, imposed with foreign language (English that we speak), made into INDIA by a foreign power still divided into multiple fractured permanently divided boundaries and people. Thats why other Asian countries like China & Japan dont really respect us as much, because we lost of our old identity to the British, unlike their cultures.

Now let's do some calculation for #factcheck
    Football field Length = 110mtr so l = 110 x 2 = 220 mtr or 0.22 km
    Cricket field width = 150 mtr. Therefore w = 150 mtr or 0.15 km
    Area = l x w; 0.22 x 0.15 = 0.033 Sq Km.

At the time of the British withdrawal, 565 princely states were officially recognized in the Indian subcontinent,[3] apart from thousands of zamindari estates and jagirs. In 1947, princely states covered 40% of the area of pre-independence India and constituted 23% of its population.
Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 by AO Hume, who was the son of Joseph Hume, the Radical Scottish member of parliament. Resentment against English by Scots spread to British colonies.

The half-lies are truly dangerous. Firstly, no law or treaty demarcated Indo-Ceylon Border from the days of British Raj. As such, the border was not finalised. Secondly, Katchatheevu was exchanged for Wadge Bank as Wadge Bank was far more strategic location for India from which countless fishermen upto this day earn their livelihood and is also rich in petroleum resources. Thirdly, Parliament was not consulted as there was not constitutional agreement over the sovereignty of Katchatheevu unlike parts in West Bengal. It was an undemarcated border in the case of India and then Ceylon. So from all reasons, strategic, ethical and national, Katchatheevu in return for Wadge Bank was of a great benefit to India

This (narration/response from INC etc.) is what makes neutral people like me NOT to support INC(opposition parties)- We try to show there is something to do with immigration (issues)which should also be considered with this handing over of Island to Srilanka (AS if the then Govts. tried to balance between these 2 issues). I do understand the Govt's complex situation (in balancing both).
My point is - Nehru/Indira never showed (in their comments on this island) any such kind of balance approach. They clearly showed as if this is a small island that we need not bother. For their mindset/thoughts, DMK/Karunanidhi also tried his own politics and everyone tried their BEST in their comments/ actions in handling the situation, as if this island is useless.
Even now, INC/DMK tried to take political mileage (till this is CLEAR now to Indians) on this till now as if NDA govt. is responsible for this issue and they are NOT even showing any remorse for such comments/actions at that time and shamelessly still supporting then(taken) actions.

Sri Lankan fishermen from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar (who are from the Sri Lankan Tamil Community who speak the Tamil language) districts are agitated by the alleged recurring illegal fishing by their counterparts from India (who are mainly from Tamil Nadu who speak the Tamil language). If Indian fishermen want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Currently, Sri Lankan fishermen get detained by the Indian Coast Guard when they unlawfully enter Indian waters on their way to the Arabian Sea for fishing activities.

It is all good and fair that the current (BJP) government clarified the Katchatheevu island controversy. One may call it a politically motivated move but nevertheless the citizens have all the rights to know. What we need is a system like 'Automatic declassification' of USA by which classified information becomes declassified after expiration of a maximum time frame for classification which is usually 25 years. How can previous governments even dare to think about hiding such dealings from the public and keep misleading their voters for years! Also, ThePrint should have called out DMK in this video.
    A. India’s need for an automatic declassification system, akin to the one used in the United States, is multifaceted. Here are some key reasons:
    1. Objective Assessment of Military History: Declassification allows for a more objective assessment of India’s military history. By making historical records accessible, policymakers can make informed decisions regarding military security and strategy.
    2. De-Politicization of Military Events: A more liberalized declassification system helps de-politicize military events, including wars India has fought. This move can prevent the use of national security concerns as a pretext to withhold information.
    3. Transparency and Accountability: Automatic declassification promotes transparency and accountability. Citizens have a right to know about significant historical events, and declassifying records ensures that information is not unduly hidden.
    4. International Norms: Several democratic countries follow automatic declassification practices. By adopting a similar approach, India aligns itself with international norms and best practices.
While India has made strides in this direction, there’s still room for improvement. The recent announcement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh that war records will be archived and declassified every 25 years is a positive step.
    B. Controversial Topics and Historical Figures: Citizens of India are keenly interested in uncovering details about certain historical figures. Here are two notable examples:
    1. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose:
    - Netaji Bose’s mysterious disappearance and subsequent death have fueled speculation and intrigue. Researchers have produced forensic face-mapping evidence suggesting that he may have been alive even after his alleged plane crash. A man photographed with former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri during the Indo-Pak peace talks in Tashkent in 1966 bears a strong resemblance to Netaji. If these photographs indeed depict Netaji, they challenge existing theories about his fate.
    - The Henderson Brooks Report, which investigated the 1962 Sino-India boundary war, remains classified. Its declassification could shed light on critical events
    .
    2. Lal Bahadur Shastri:
    - Shastri’s sudden death in Tashkent in 1966 has also sparked controversy. His grandson recalled that Shastri had hinted at revealing something significant upon his return. The face-mapping report connecting him to Netaji adds another layer of intrigue.
    - Details surrounding Shastri’s demise remain a subject of public interest, and citizens seek transparency regarding the circumstances.
In summary, India’s pursuit of transparency through declassification and the curiosity surrounding historical figures & issues like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Lal Bahadur Shastri underscore the importance of accessible information for informed discourse and understanding of the past.

First of all it is NOT a new issue. The AIADMK has been consistently opposing the handover for decades now. Its MPs have raised this repeatedly in parliament and CMs especially Jayalalithaa have raised this regularly. The BJP if at all could have done something about it in the last 10 years. Although the blame for callously handing over the island lies with Congress /Indira Gandhi and DMK. The handing over of the island barely outside of Indian shore has led to killing of Indian fishermen mostly Tamils, has led to smuggling due to lax SL policing. It could have been worse if China had made inroads into SL and gotten an electronic spy setup. It certainly poses a security risk and curtails India's Exclusive Economic Zone.
To dismiss this island barely 25Kms from Rameshwaram as insignificant is a careless piece of journalism.

Battle for Kachchaitheevu and Fishing rights.
During the mid-1970s the area was restricted by the signing of a maritime boundary agreement of 1974 and 1976 between India and Sri Lanka. This demarcation of ' Fishers Line ' vis-a-vis-the international maritime boundary line [ IMBL } made it illegal for fishermen from either side to cross over into each other's waters to fish. This demarcation was the inception of what would eventually turn into violent conflict.
The Indian fishermen from Rameswaram adopted the process of 'drawling ' a process of dropping nylon nets ( as opposed to traditional nets ) with attached weights to the bottom of the sea and dragging them along with the powerful motor boats, unlike traditional wind-propelled sailing boats to capture the popular seafood such prawns. In 1970s the Indian fishermen saw the need for new grounds to fish and began encroaching upon Sri Lankan waters despite the water border agreement .
The civil war and the fishing ban in Sri Lanka continued till 2009 leaving leeway to the Indian fishermen to illegally fish in these waters.
Due to their small boats, Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen could never compete with the Indian high-speed motorboats. The Indian government has done little to resolve these problems.
The most affected community in this situation continues to be the coastal fishermen from Sri Lanka . There has been no inclination from either nation towards international litigation .{ UNCLOS ] United Nations Convention of the Law of the Seas.

As a person from TamilNadu, I think this is a well rounded analysis. Any international decision is for the sake of the country and its peace, no matter which party decides. But at least one had the decency not to politicize the deal with Bangladesh when it happened.
About fishing - TN fishermen typically does deep sea fishing with superior tech when compared to Sri Lankans. So fishing in kachatheevu is not a big problem for them.
The real problem is the arrests and firing on fishermen by SriLankan authorities. There could be mistakes in both the sides but this needs more attention than kachatheevu.

1:17 "callous about India's territorial integrity" is a good statement (& associated charge), about people in a dynastic order.
This isn't for what the country elected them & put in that position of running the affairs of the country. This is worse than the attacks of a Ghori or Ghazni - Instead of one of them coming here to loot, you sent the loot to wherever they are (were). It is worse than the worst pillage of Nadir Shah, who carried away the "khazana" of the country (as the ruler was unable to fight Nadir Shah's army, but hosted them & pampered them). Nadir Shah gave a remission of 2 years to his subject people of his country, with that loot !
Not "asking" the army to fight the enemy (not at the door-step but well within your home, indulging in wedding ceremony instead) is another serious blunder (or crime or whatever).
We need to ponder (& device methods to prevent). In such emergency/crisis the "president" shall act & "freeze" the functioning of his/her government & give the task of driving out the enemy from our soil, to the army. Only upon the restoration of lost territory, shall a civilian government should start functioning. Most of my countrymen may not relish it; but it is an exigency or contingency we need to consider.

Tamils live in the northern part of Sri lanka and in Tamilnadu, it basically belonged to the Tamils who live in both shores. Indian Tamilnadu fishermen exploit the resources as they do overfishing with banned boats and tools for fishing, that is the reason they were getting arrested. Sri lankan Tamil fishermen are also getting arrested by Indin navy for border crossing and fishing. Many Indians are in Sri lanka who were sent as slaves by british and India had not taken all of them back after Independence so to compensate that also it might have been given.
Moreover, most of the tea plantation job opportunities are given to Indians however in India Tamils are in refugee camps - jobless and eating ration rice and poor food and in abandoned buildings.
So to resolve, Tamils of both the lands need to unite and make some good decision that favor the both. Other than Tamil people no one else has the right to claim anything

SG should not compare agreements with Bangladesh against Sri Lankan, with Bangladesh it is just a few km of territory, and with Sachdeva, it is 200nm of the economic zone.

This is a very well done video by SG with Journalistic Diplomacy to cover the historical context of India-Sri Lanka relations and Indian-Bangladesh relations and diplomacy with a nice lesson of history from the past. Long live the friendly relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Long live the friendly relationship between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Long live the friendly relationship between Bangladesh and India. Katchatheevu is currently part of Sri Lanka and there is no need to bring it to now to claim it as part of India.

@@ruwanfonseka The issue was not brought up by BJP, it is BJP response to Congress and DMK allegations of center's non-action in relation to Indian Fishermen who are rotting in Sri Lankan Jails.
The boarder settlement with Bangladesh is quite different to gifting of Katchateevu. One is strategic, other is foolishness.
Do not call Sri-Lanka a friend, they have always acted against Indian interest, As Vajpayee said we cannot choose our Neibaurs, we need to manage, gifting of Katchteevu is biggest blunder when you are talking in strategical terms.

@@AK-yw9qs Why do you claim that Sri-Lanka and India are not friendly countries? Can you explain to your claims as Sri Lanka has always acted against Indian interest? Sri Lanka is not part of India but an Independent Country in South Asia. Sri Lanka is also a Non Aligned Country. Sri Lanka as a Non Aligned Country is and has been a Friendly nation with India and the countries in the Indian Subcontinent and also with China. As an Independent Country Sri Lanka as a country should be free to have ties including Military ties for the good in the region to maintain keeping friendly ties with India and Sri Lanka, China and Sri Lanka, USA and Sri Lanka, Russia and Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Sri Lanka etc. For Sri Lanka, India, China, USA, Russia, Pakistan etc. are friendly nations. Just because India and China does not get along well to hold Military ties or have any Strategic Ties and Partnerships like BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) , that does not mean that Sri Lanka and China cannot have Military partnerships or any support and assistance from China, this is similar to that India and Russia are friendly nations, India and Iran are friendly nations, while India and USA are friendly nations, although Russia and USA are not friendly nations and Iran and USA are not friendly nations. Just as India and Russia are free to maintain friendly ties and India and Iran are free to have friendly ties that have been there for decades, Sri Lanka and Russia has been friendly nations just like Sri Lanka and China has been friendly nations, just the same way Sri Lanka and India has been friendly nations and also Sri Lanka and USA has been friendly nations. It's always good to maintain friendly ties and spread peace through diplomatic relationships, rather to spread hate and war among nations as with a war there are no winners but losers only.

@@AK-yw9qs Sri Lankan fishermen from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar (who are from the Sri Lankan Tamil Community who speak the Tamil language) districts are agitated by the alleged recurring illegal fishing by their counterparts from India (who are mainly from Tamil Nadu who speak the Tamil language). If Indian fishermen want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Currently, Sri Lankan fishermen get detained by the Indian Coast Guard when they unlawfully enter Indian waters on their way to the Arabian Sea for fishing activities.

@@ruwanfonseka No one is questioning Sri Lanka's relationship with other countries, at the same time allowing spy ships in its water is questionable. do you know China has spy station in SriLankan at its eastern coast.? I do think this is a very friendly act towards India.
I understand you never went to Sri Lanka; people's sentiments are anti India. I know because, I have been there. In1977 war where did Pakistan fueled their aircrafts and naval vessels? These are just few, if you take little pain and research, you will find many many more.
Saying all this, personally SriLankan's are good people if we take away their anti-India stand and it is the one of beautiful countries in the world.

If Kachchateevu is part of India, I must say Arunachal is part of china, and Sikkim is an independent country. Moreover Darjeeling is part of china. Let's go this way. As a Sri Lankan, I support. Also, Tamilnadu must get its Independence.

I READ THAT, KATCHATHEEVU ISLAND IS HARDLY 20K.M. FROM OUR COUNTRY!! AND ITS FAR FROM SRI-LANKA!!
It's natural for a country, to claim, islands near their shores, theirs, than their neighbour, Sri Lanka, who is far away, than Bharat!!
