Excellent choice. Koga must be the first. I was in the audience that day in Belgrade 1989 when he did that one-handed ippon seoi. I still remember the sound of the breath of astonished crowd. Ebinouma is must also be ranked top. He is possibly the best technician ever. His seoi-nage is flawless.
Just gotta say, this is BY FAR my favorite Judo channel. I recently got into Judo coming from BJJ. Just love these videos with commentary, makes watching Judo so much more interesting for a beginner like me.
Very good list. I would put Abe at number 3 ahead of An. Abe is becoming one of the all time greats and he could have also many years left. Koga was a beast. He had everything in his seoi nage and he was way ahead of his time. i would say he revolutioned the technique with the split hip variation.
Watching Koga: A New Wind was a formative moment in my Judo. I'd been training 2 and a half years at that stage, and from that day forward, I was determined to always strive for Standing Ippon Seoi Nage over the drop variation.
Beautiful compilation! Thanks for sharing. I only gave an objection. In judo terms when we say "seoinage", by default we mean "morote seoinage". Not Ippon seoinage.
Maybe you but not Japan 😂 you almost never hear either version called the longer form name. Everything is just a seoi nage here unless specifying otherwise
@@JudoHighlights2015 let’s try to crack this mystery. I remember a long time ago when I trained full time reading a snippet on Koga’s reverse judo technique but I never found out what it was. Koga was one of those rare guys where, u knew exactly what he was going to do but still couldn’t stop it.
They say the best competitors really focus on 5 or fewer throws and specialize in a single aspect in ne-waza. How about a compilation of your tachi-waza set?
That is Ippon Seoinage and morote soinage those are two main ones but morote is really two handed and not kneeling. I would call kneeling one Hantachi seoinage but that terms comes form Koryu jujutsu Seou means to carry on one's back when it is combined with nage ( throw) the last "u' changes to " i " and becomes seoinage... Like Origami which combination of kami and oru to form origami. Oru means to fold or brake. and kami is paper but the k changes to g when combined like keri by itselelf and maegeri when it is combined. Combine morote with and otoshi from taiotoshi and you get seoiotoshi. they are almost identical. and all are hand techniques.if you use either taiotoshi or seoiotshi and lift the extended leg and you get ashiguruma my favoriite. Just throw over the extended leg. The thing all these competitors lack is kuzushi. They are very strong and ironically Juu means soft but it hardly is... if you ever throw anyone with speed and timing the effort is slight and the feeling is amazing. I once and only once threw someone like that and it was so amazing that the opponent yell out " how did you do that" ! I did not know how to respond. very hard to do... but it is the point, although you would not know by how much strength is used by these competitors. I stopped practice after 2 nd degree and moves on to koryu's which incorporates strikes. The dynamics of judo are indispensable. It is more clean to avoid injury but you gain the dinamics then just add what was taken away by Kano Jigoro in the early 1920s/. There should be Judo clubs in middle schools thru high school in all of America. Judo should be the first martial art one learns then continue with a striking style, Judo competition has changed a lot since the 70s and not all good.
I'm fairly new to judo and really enjoy throws with a right arm over the shoulder gripping the back or belt so i was wondering if there was a specific name for that grip or position
Who do you got as number one there? I think Inoue or Yamashita is number one, closely followed by Ono. Hard to separate this guys. Suzuki and Maruyama should be on the list.

Mikhail Pulyaev from Russia would be a good honorable mention
He had a good seoi? Interesting
Koga definitely!!!
I have seen here on TH-cam uchimata being called “the throw of kings” but I disagree Seoi is the throw of kings!!! Devastating throw!
Just gotta say, this is BY FAR my favorite Judo channel. I recently got into Judo coming from BJJ. Just love these videos with commentary, makes watching Judo so much more interesting for a beginner like me.
Cheers man! Think I’m starting to realize lots of people find these videos educational and show the exciting parts of judo
It's quite remarkable that you made this video without including Jeon, he's pretty much THE prototypical Seoi master
Already knew that Koga would be number 1. R.I.P Legend.
Koga Legendary
people missed out.....who were unique during their time.....shojo fuji, sumio endo, jeon ki young, muneta
I am shocked to learn in this video that An Changrim is retired... the only judoka with real potential to upset Ono in -73 kilos in my opinion...
He’s like 27, 28 maybe
@@JudoHighlights2015 yeah it's a young retirement for sure. But he's had one hell of a career in that short time.
Both of them are retired.
@@LêHiếuTô you're right, since posting my original comment over 1 year ago ono shohei has also retired

Totally. Split hip seoi is the bomb
Interestingly An Chang-rim and Akimoto both attended the same High School near Yokohama, Japan.
Where is choi minho!!! The master of reverse seoi nage!!!
I wanted to include him, but that’s all he does! Have to have a standard seoi as well…
@@JudoHighlights2015 you've gotta be joking. He's always had a legendary standard seoi! how could you say that LOL
Jeon Ki Yeong should have been included!! He's the one that pretty much started the seoi meta in the 90s.
Please make a harai goshi highlight 🙏
Great list. Next video: top 10 uchi mata experts of all time.
Yeah I should do that
You make excellent videos. How about tai-otoshi?
Not sure if I’ve got one already…
Tai-otoshi is the essence of Judo. I never mastered it.
@@Vaitamanu focus on pulling the sleeve with lots of force. This tip helped me a lot
@@mfp5585 "Mastered" was anyway a bit pretentious.
N.8 what he does used to be called seoe-otoshi, it was later reclassified as a variation of ipon seo-nage
No that is not Seoi Otoshi. In Illadis' variation, he does the lift. There's no lift in Seoi Otoshi. Totally different throw.
Great list, great video, great listening to the community.

And Yeldos SMETOV
Nice compilation, but i am missing isao okano. He probably inspired Koga. Also Nakanishi was an absolute seio master, even wrote a bookon the topic
Pulling out the old guys! So true!
What was the grip that Koga used? I can never figure it out: sleeve or opposite side lapel?
He used the lapel, what side I can’t remember

I remembered watching on a show that he goes for left for the left arm-pit for his seoi, I forgot the name of the show but he was there with Shinohara
Koga's strength was that he could do the Seoi from just about any grip and position.
Ippon seoi nage is one of the toughest move to master. Especially in battle
Jeon ki yong. Smetov Choi Sobirov Takajo
Muneta! Speaking of heavyweight...
I don't know who should be in the list but what I do know is your video is excellent!
