Awesome review! I once bought those same Amazon bibs, and despite the "Amazon's Choice" banner over the ad, I also hated them. They felt too "vacuum packed" for my lower half. I've purchased The Black Bibs as well and really liked them-great for long rides bc the chamois is PRIME!! however, I don't love the lack of grip on the legs. If I remember correctly I paid about $45 for them. I could have (should have) paid just $10ish more for the leg grippers. Lastly- bibs in wash is fine. bibs in dryer is cardinal sin!!
Yeah, I know I shouldn’t throw them in the dryer - this was a stress test of sorts. Wanted to beat them up to see if they held together. The premium Black Bibs are really nice, as well as the Souke Sports premium bibs.
The black bibs look very similar to a cheaper brand here in australia called Neopro. no grippers but hold the leg very well, very comfortable, and at 90 bucks australian, cheaper by a significant margin than anything else on the market. I havent tried any true high end bibs (400+ AUD over here), but unless they massage my shoulders while I ride, I cant see them being that much better.
Tried those neopro ones. Best thing I can say about them is that I can feel every contour of my smp saddle. Tinelli are far superior and only a little more expensive.
Good review. I have the Amazon bibs and 2 pairs of the Black Bibs; the latter are more comfortable and perform well on those longer rides. My 2nd pair of Black (well, blue) I went for the ones with the pockets and the upgraded chamois. Those also have the leg grippers and typically I reach for those first. Thanks for an informative review on these products!
All of these of good for short rides or indoor stuff over the short run. When you get out and get some real mileage on them they start to fail. You have to move up to the Ultimate in the Black Bib to get something that will last, and that still seems miles behind the real stuff. It's a shame that you really can't get premium features in bibs for a bargain price. By the time you buy all three or five of the decent bargain brands, you could have bought one of the premiums that are sadly just better.
I did get the ultimate Black Bibs (review coming soon) and those are definitely the best ones I own! I have done about 4 centuries in the normal ones, though. The ultimates are worth the upgrade price, for sure!
Thank you, Michael. I also prefer jerseys from Black Bibs. I’m partial to cycling jerseys that are simple colors & don’t have a lot of logos or crazy patterns. Black Bibs jerseys fit me well & are very reasonably priced. What do you prefer?
Buyer be ware. These shorts use a very large thick chamois pad. If you are size XL-XXXL they may be ok. Pad for Medium size short doesn't sit right for the sit bones. Strong pass for this reason. Material feels good and overall sizing was ok for my 6' 165lb body.
Good info - that’s why I prefer budget bibs. With sizing, fit, and preference so different from person to person, I’d hate to buy expensive bibs only to have them not fit me right.
Great detailed real world long term review. I recently tried off brand bibs and shorts with some Santic ones and wasn't that impressed. I've since ordered some cheap Pearl Izumi Quest shorts, not bibs, that were on sale and expect them to be much better and were cheaper, because they were on sale.

Yeah, I’m getting all I need out of the sub-$100 (USD) bibs. I can’t see what the really expensive ones have to offer.

I bought Darevie brand on Amazon. Seems well made and feels good.
Haven’t tried those yet. Maybe I’ll do another round of affordable bibs

I got the upgraded Black Bibs (no pockets). Those are the ones I used for the 200 mile race. They’re the first ones I grab!
When I started riding a bike, I had like 5 or 6 pairs of bib shorts. Today, I only have 2 or 3, I usually use the Assos brand.
Less but better!

Awesome review! Thank you for comparing budget ones. Which company do you prefer your jersey's from?

I’ve tried bibs and shorts at all budgets & over time I grab certain ones for certain rides. I always go back to the Black Bibs, though.
