    I left St. Louis over 7 years ago. Probably never go back, but even though the Northside has lots of crime, they also have better community cohesion compared to suburbs where neighbors never talk. Love seeing the dice games, party balloons, and old cats hanging out on the stoop!

      An example of white flight is Cairo, Illinois at the far southern tip of Illinois. It's a food desert. There isn't even a gas station to my knowledge there. Thankfully, the state of Illinois is investing in the community by creating a shipping port. I think the total project is around $40 million, but like anything with government, it's slow.

Incredible, breathtaking architecture all gone to seed. 😢😢😢😢

      St. Louis, Missouri is a major city. It's on the west side of the Mississippi River, in Missouri. This is the North side of St. Louis, MO. East St. Louis is across the river in Illinois. There's a bunch of smaller towns surrounding ESTL on that side of the river. It's known as "Metro East" locally.
      Same thing that happened to Detroit happened here. It used to be a major industrial city, then a lot of places closed down. Jobs dried up, and people that could leave either left for the suburbs or to somewhere else entirely (white flight and black flight). Couple that with poor management, lack of funding, and the drug epidemics (Heroin, Crack, gangs)... And here we are.

      The city government, the alderman of certain areas of the city didn't give a damn and instead of investment of businesses, trade schools and recreation centers. You have liquor stores on every other block, and abandoned houses. Crime was sure to follow.

    • @flatsville1
      @flatsville1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devjones1 It was more complicated than that. Changes on the law on the federal level during the Regan Admin had a lot to do with the decline.
      Corporate deregulation allowed formally prohibited merger & acquisitions to take place killing off a lot of businesses that consolidated & moved HQs to the coasts with the rise of globalization.
      The Tax Reform Act of 86 killed off real estate investment partnerships that were doing residential & commercial rehab on both the north & south sides of the city. I saw these partnerships dissolve brfore my eyers after the tax credits & passive activity loss limitations were scaled back
      A lone, well-meaning alderperson could at best only marginally mitigate the changes that fedgov put into play.

    • @carakellmeyer5037
      @carakellmeyer5037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They have super small front yards, usually with a slope and stairs. The road is flat. Back yards might be as small as the front yards. And who would know you were having a hang out and all were invited if you were in the back? Gotta be in the front- come along and join in!
      The question is : why did he "have" to drive thru the party? He could have backed up because that looked like a block party that he crashed. And block parties happen on the South side of STL. We park our cars across the streets ( someone might get a permit for closing the street, I guess) and do the same as this group. Eat, drink and be merry.

      Lol! The buildings are pretty much rock solid. Only ones falling down brick wise are the ones that have purposely been “toppled” by bored kids. If one could rehab 4-5 square blocks at ONE TIME, it has a chance to make a difference. One at a time rehabbing houses get stripped before they can get 1/2 done.

    How does a city end up with areas like this ? Should've cities be investing more in say, parks and recreational facilities, and perhaps community policing efforts. I think cops should live no further than 20mins from where they work, otherwise they're not really part of the community and don't have a personal, vested, inherent interest in seeing that area improve.

    At first I thought this was a white person making this video… until you pulled up over on the dub and started turning corners in ally and dead end street over there … I use to live over there off Penrose and Blair by the water towers . That is seriously the hood , I knew then nah this ain’t no white dude over there riding around filming shit like that…. But appreciate the video bruh.👍

    somebody should try to buy up the blocks. when there is a lot of abandoned buildings there is no growth. look like some rebuilding and rebranding need to happen because this community is hurting. I mean where do the children play? sad really.

    • @flipnotrab
      @flipnotrab 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There have been a few groups that have tried. Problem is (was with last BIG attempt) people start “demanding” ridiculous prices for their property when they find out someone is “buying up” blocks. I totally get heritage by some of these peoples houses that have taken great care & pride in them, but the burned out ones who want 100/125k and haven’t been habitable in decades? They are the problem. City is too chicken to eminent domain them for the greater good of community. Sucks. Lots of GREAT buildings/homes there. Easy to heat & cool too because they are all solid 14”-18” brick & concrete.
