  • Make as many model detail parts or complete small models as you want with the Kokoni EC1 3D Printer. This incredibly compact and easy-to-use 3D printer comes fully assembled, requires no bed leveling, and is so compact it will fit almost anywhere. I’ve been making dozens of model detail parts for my model train projects with this printer, and even a complete 50’ N Scale boxcar. You don’t need a computer as you control everything from your phone. This is a great printer if you need to make small model parts and can also be a great printer for kids to use as it uses non-toxic PLA filament and is easy to control via an app on your phone or tablet. Small resin printers will do better with fine details on very small figures and vehicles than this filament printer and obviously this printer can’t print large items. But, it works great for most of things I need to printer for my model train projects.

      Resin printers make higher quality prints, but aren't as good for inside the house given that you have to deal with liquid resin. Much better for the garage.

    As someone doing most of my modeling (and imagineering) in larger scales such as O scale and 1/24 running on G gauge track, these newest developments in 3D printers are exciting (even though this particular printer seems better for the small scale stuff…)

    Hi Steve, new subscriber here. Love your videos, thank you! On this printer, it appears they had a good price increase in the 5 months since you made this. I have been interested in 3D printing for a few years since my nephew made me some switch holders for my RV lights when I found a design online and sent it to him. Working on a new N scale layout I can see plenty of use for one! Just paid nearly $20 for 2 “Pods” shipping containers for a flatbed car and could easily have printed them for less!. But in your video you mentioned the “Ender 3” so I searched that on Amazon and found it as cheap as $168 where the Kokoni you mentioned has gone up to $289 as of 2/10/24. They still seem to honor the discount, but I have to wonder if the Ender 3 isn’t a better deal. Even if I added the $49 enclosure for the Ender it’s still cheaper than the Kokoni with the discount. Also, do you need special software to run these? I have a macbook/ipad/iphone and wonder if software is available for any/all of them? Thanks again for your hard work and informative videos!

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Ender 3 is more flexible overall in that it has a much bigger printer bed and can print more materials, but it isn’t as user friendly since you have to level the bed and configure bed and printer head temperatures yourself. You can use free software for the printer and some free software is available for designing.

    Hi Steve! Great minds think alike. 😁 I also have an Ender 3 and cover the build plate with blue painters tape as well. I've used it to build some N scale boxcars, flat cars, hopper cars, and gondolas but making covered hoppers with all that end ladder detail is a pain. I had to do those in pieces with the ends being printed by themselves and then glued on. I hadn't thought about rooftop details. Now those are on my list. Great hobby within a hobby!

    If space is at a super premium I could see the utility of this. However there are small resin printers that are the same cost or cheaper that would offer better quality. The only downside is having a slightly larger footprint. the Geeetech Alkaid is only $99. You can get the entire printer and wash and cure station for about the same cost as this PLA printer. But again at the cost of some space.

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, the resin printer is going to do better but I think there is a place for both since a lot of things will print fine with this one and it is less hassle. Not that most people should have three 3D printers, but if you can get them as gifts or whatever I would get both if it was an option.

    3D printing offers a lot of flexibility in creating lots of object but filament printers have yet to find a way to print without a thousand lines that require lots of tedious sanding and filling. Yes, resin printers are messy, require curing cabinets and lots of alcohol but the quality of the finished items is infinitely better.

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is true overall, but depends on what you print. I really didn't have to do much if any sanding on most of these prints because most of them didn't need any external supports which helps a lot. Also, you can smooth them if you brush on a coat of one of something like Bondene or one of those types of adhesives if you need to help to smooth out the joints where the supports connected.

    Hey Steve, great video. I have a question, or two. I’m doing n scale and the one thing I get aggregated with is the figures. You either pay $15 for a pack of 5 quality figures or $6 for 100 poor quality figures. And the choices are very limited compared to other scales. I moved to the Philippines about two years ago. That makes my costs much higher because of over seas shipping. So I’ve started looking into 3d printers. Seems resign makes a cleaner finish but those are too much trouble. Finally,my question. Can you filament printer produce a quality n scale figure? If so, where is a good place to find stl files of figures. Last question, can an O scale or HO scale file be down sized to N scale , keeping with figures. Thanks for all your videos and info.

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, N scale figures are too small for a filament printer. I mean it will print them but they won’t look very good. Resin printers can do a good job with them but as you said more hassle. That being said I haven’t tried to print n scale figure. But 28mm D&D figures don’t come out great either but then they are usually really complex. You can still see the detail but it is a lot of trouble with the supports and such and getting a smooth finish. 35 mm and bigger work ok. But train figures would be simple and not carrying weapons and have tails and stuff so I guess I should try them. Could probably print standing figures laying down and not have supports at all which would help a ton. Ok, I’ll try it sometime in the coming days. Lol

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A resin printer will do a better job overall if you want very small detail like that. This one will show it, but a resin printer will look better, assuming it is a higher resolution one.

      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I connected to the printer by Bluetooth, then once I did that I connected the printer to my home wifi network. Then my phone app will see the printer online and allow me to print to it. There have been a couple of times when it would show up as offline and I had to reboot the printer, which solved that issue.

    The Beep and the cartridge system are a big negative for me. While the beep can probably be patched, the cartridge system has "Future HP printer" written all over it. I also heavily doubt you can refill them, why else would you have to scan the QR code if not to make sure you do not reuse old cartridges?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You scan it every time you change them and you don’t have to scan the one that is on the printer. I have gone back and forth between three colors so you can do it multiple times at least. But, will see what happens once I run out. I have loads of PLA so I’ll try refilling one once one of them runs out.

      Check out Jimmy at the DIY and Digital. He has a lot of videos on 3D printing like this one with recommendations: th-cam.com/video/P-vwGE2sxPI/w-d-xo.html
      I had planned to buy a small resin printer for making these detail parts, but decided to try this one first so I didn't have to worry about the resin mess and could keep it inside the house. Resin printers will certainly give you more fine detail overall than these kind can, but it depends how much you need. For a lot of these types of detail parts you don't need that level of detail, but it varies in what you want to do. If you want to make small figures, a resin printer is a must.

    Not sure I like that it will need its own filament rather than using rolls you can buy off Amazon & elsewhere. As to making cars, I've designed my own for Z scale. I've started offering them at Cults 3D. I'm going to do the same for N; probably older 40' cars since those aren't as available from manufacturers as they used to be.

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That part is frustrating. I believe the idea is to keep the filament drier so it will print more consistently. I have lots of rolls of PLA for my Ender 3. I plan to try wrapping a spool in these cartridges once one or them runs out and try using it that way. Not ideal, but will see if that at least works ok.
