    But one thing- you have not mentioned ice worms. When I was there I heard about ice worms and I thought it was a local fable but one of the glaciers had a sign for ice worms and a local guide pointed them out and sure enough there were these tiny little worms which fed on debris on top of glaciers. I went to one of those ice cream shops later and asked for “ice worm swirl surprise” and got a laugh.

    Another great travelogue to end my slow-paced Sunday! Love how you take time to explain the history behind the places you visit and how you got there - like through that one-lane tunnel. So fascinating! And that cove at the end of the trail - WOW!!! Your aerial shots really showed the beauty of that spot. With those salmon, didn't you just want to reach in and grab one and take it back to eat?? Seems like you seriously could have done that, without even needing your rod! Thanks again for sharing!!

This is another great video from both of you. I'm so sorry that you kept stepping and sinking into the mud. But the two of you are adorable with just how you handle things and how you work with each other and are so authentic. It's definitely worth watching. There is a slew of people that are doing Alaska right now that are RVers and they are all were Whittier the same time. But all showed different perspectives. Two of three which you guys are one of them I preferred. But I love how you show us the nature and the beauty. That's amazing that you shared the tunnel with trains and you have to turn up like a ferry or plane. The entrance was epic too! The Portage Pass trail looked stunning but the effort of up to go back down sounds brutal. I've done a few of those types of hikes over the summer and it tests the body for sure! The wild berry picking is always fun, never found a salmon berry myself, but we have so many blackberries at this time of year. The trick is to get the ones that are in the sun for most of the day for the sweetness, and high up enough to not be worried about dogs weeing over them! The Emerald Cove Trail looked to have stunning vistas, especially at the end, and the salmon were very cool, but I couldn't have done it with all that mud - not my cup of tea at all! Were the Salmon up there spawning do you know? I've seen it once in Canada and there were SO many - all protected. Crazy to think you guys only saw the first Alaskan bear in this video.

    We visited in 1995. We've been to many national parks. We think the Four Corners area in the southwest may be a close second but AK is THE BEST. Visiting in May is too early - still too much snow / possible avalanches along the Seward Hwy. July and August are some of the wettest months so we visited in mid-June. Fairly dry and the kids aren't out of school yet. Worked for us. Not quite "in season" but things were starting to hum. In high season the road to Seward (there's only one) can get really busy and very slow. Good luck. Get a copy of The Milepost before finishing your plans and plan well in advance.

    Love it! Glaciers and salmon and glaciers and..... MUD! That was some serious mud! Epic views. I'd like to go there but not sure Katy would be up for that tunnel.... too long and she doesn't like tunnels. Maybe? Guess we'll see......

      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of mud! Just wait until the next video too! 😂 There was lots to see on that little trail
      The tunnel was long, but you’re only in it for under ten minutes each way. If she can handle that she’s in for a real treat over there!

    Another amazing video. Thanks.
    When I was in Alaska in 1993, you had to drive your car onto a series of flat cars on the train to ride through the tunnel to Whittier.
    As you were watching the salmon, I kept thinking to myself: "Do you know who else likes salmon? Bears. Bears like salmon, and salmon in a shallow creek make an easy meal." Good that you didn't encounter any bears along the streams, but saw one as you were driving down the road.
    As you were eating the berries, I kept going back to the Chris McCandless story (read "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer if you're not familiar) where he mis-identified a plant and ate it and it eventually killed him because he ate something toxic to humans.
    Yes, I probably worry a bit too much, and that has dampened some of my experiences, but I'm still here to talk about the great ones that I did have. 😂😂

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be a cool experience with the train car!
      We were wondering where the bears were on the trail also!
      I was also scared of that as well! 😂 we did read a tiny bit about what to look for before we went out, but the thought was still there!

    Haha, the clip of Adam stepping into sludgy mud! We did the same trail in the rain and muck and it was probably the nastiest hike we've done, but still worth it. Our friend nearly lost a boot to mud suction multiple time! Glad y'all got better weather than us. It was monsoon weather when we stopped in Whittier.

    I've watched all your Alaska journey videos. I took a road trip from Fairbanks to Kenai peninsula back in 2009. Went to Portage Glacier, whale watched and saw Orcas and walked up to Exit Glacier. It has receded so much from when I was there. Thank you for this video series and last year I cruised the inside passage whuch was amazing. This makes me want to road trip again. Alaska is so beautiful!!!

    I swear your photography and videography skills are un-comparable. Are you certain that you're not employed by some tourism bureau or even as Adam keeps mentioning, the National Geographic Society?! I love the enthusiasm you both have even while going thru all that muck, yuck!

    I was wondering when a bear would show up since you were hiking along the bear buffet line😄! Today's Special salmon and berries! Every video I watch I'll say this is my favorite, they are all thoughtfully done! This one was really a great variety of views and wildlife! Your excitement and awe over the beauty and what i call "special treats" (aka bears and salmon swimming up stream how cool) is contagious to the viewer! Just fantastic footage with enthusiasm and joy that rightfully can not be contained! Food looked fab too! So happy for you both!!! That mud pedicure was free too!😜

    Yay you made it to Whittier! Salmonberries come in red, yellow, and orange. Red doesn't dictate doneness. And as someone who forages and did so this summer in Whittier, the berries have been ready since late June which is earlier than normal.
    You guys by far make the best tourism videos I've seen in Alaska. I like how you include local and Alaska Native history. It's very refreshing.
    Yay you saw a bear!
    Sad that you didn't check out Portage or stay in the many free pull outs there. The Trail of Blue Ice is a fun and easy one. Plus, paddling down Portage Creek is fun and Class I that ends on the highway. It's an easy shuttle with a bike.

    What an adventure! One for the ages! This video was unique and beautifully done. The salmon, the berries, the trails, waterfalls, lakes, icebergs, the tunnel, and those mountains! Another world! Whittier looks so charming and beautiful and of course, anything Corps of Engineers is close to my heart. I worked for the Savannah COE for 25 years! Thanks for taking us along this epic trip! And I will definitely try that African peanut recipe!❤️

I agree with Kathryn that being from Arizona, that the glaciers and the gorgeous greenery and Mountains never get old. Exactly the opposite of what we are used too! I will now return to the Canyonlands video lol

    Omg! I did lose my shoe on a hike! It was in Big Bend...the riverbed was mosly dry except some mud spots and I got stuck in up to my knees. I felt bad for littering, but we couldn't get in deep enough to get my shoe back!

    No doubt about it, Alaska is the destination of choice for a wonderful extended outdoor trip - best done if you are young (20-40) physically fit and don't mind some of the discomforts that with the great outdoors (frequent rain, mosquitoes and flies, no toilets).

    When I was in Alaska in 1987, I took a tour bus from Anchorage to Whittier, and our bus drove onto a train to go through the tunnel. The wait for the train was hardly boring -- there must have been 30 bald eagles roosting in trees along the track. In Whittier, we boarded a boat and cruised to Valdez. We saw a couple of orcas. Thank you for taking us with you.
