Pope John Paul II and Britain's Queen Elizabeth II shared their hopes for progress in Christian unity during a meeting Tuesday.
The Queen last visited the Vatican exactly 20 years ago and the meeting with the Pope
was expected to be the highlight of her four-day visit to Italy.
The two shook hands warmly as John Paul greeted the queen at the entrance to his private library.
The Queen, who was accompanied by Prince Philip of Edinburgh, said it was a great pleasure to see the Pope again, as both recalled that their last meeting was at Buckingham Palace in 1982.
They both had prepared speeches, but rather than read them they handed the texts to each other.
The Queen stressed progress made toward peace in Northern Ireland in the conflict involving Roman Catholics and Protestants and she expressed her thanks on behalf of the UK (United Kingdom) for the Pope's help and support in the peace process.
The Queen is temporal head of the Church of England, which had expressed concern over a document that the Vatican issued last month that stressed the primacy of the Roman Catholic church among Christian communities.
Her speech, however, emphasised progress made in recent years.
For his part, John Paul assured the Queen that there can be no turning back from the ecumenical goal.
England broke from the Roman Catholic Church with King Henry VIII in the 16th century.
British monarchs have been paying visits to popes since Edward VII in 1903.

All women must be dressed in black when meeting with the Pope in the Vatican with the exception of wives of Catholic sovereigns who have the privilege of wearing white and even this is limited.

Church of England was not established by Jesus himself, they broke away from the Catholic church in 1534, because the King was a divorcee and adulterer. They are not the same. The Pope is the vicar of Jesus Christ himself while the Queen is not, but a successor of Henry VIII

Yes, we call it "being frail", not ready to die. He was suffering from Parkinson's. My dad died from it too. It destroyed his healthy body in 5 years! He could not even talk or eat food. They had a feeding tube in his stomach in the last 6 months.

I am Catholic, we do not believe in euthanasia because we live in 2 worlds, this one and the world where we will live forever. There are 2 places to go in the world beyond when we die, Heaven or Hell. If we commit euthanasia we doom our souls to Hell because it is the gravest sin we can commit on earth. God gives us life, through our mother and it is God who takes it away. If we take our life, we have told God we don't believe in Him so we doom our soul to eternal damnation. Instead, by offering our pain to God during this terrible time, we gain Heaven because our suffering is Redemptive, in other words it atones for the sins we have committed during our life time. I know that if you are not Catholic, this is a lot to comprehend but I'm willing to help you. I would hate to have you take your life and you think it will give you relief to end your suffering and you wake up in that horrible place for eternity because you did not know what would happen to you. SO MANY souls are lost to hell because they don't know how to avert it. And Satan is always looking for ways to deceive you and take your soul to hell because he's jealous of humanity. He lost Heaven because he would not listen to God. He defied God when he created us and asked that angels guard over souls, that's why we each have a Guardian Angel. And Lucifer, or Satan would not serve. he felt he was more important than a human so he refused to help us and lost Heaven. So now on earth, he is constantly looking for the ignorance of human beings to take their souls to hell. I'd hate to have him deceive you and send your soul to that abominable place. God keep you safe, always.

John Paul now a saint in Heaven and Queen Elizabeth very likely to be near by him and likely to also be close to being a saint herself for all her great work that she strived so hard to achieve in her life time. I watch Her Majesty a lot and this is the only time in all my watching that I have seen Elizabeth evince even the slightest bit of nervousness and what? -- deference. Undoubtedly some of that nervousness must have come just from the imposed rules that she had to follow (the veil, the black dress) in order to meet the Pope. The Holy See obviously straining to demonstrate that the Vicar of Christ sits in Rome, not in London. Really on several levels a fascinating meeting; the Queen seems quite aware that she has met her match here on earth and is shaking the hand of someone even more imbued by thousands of years of presence than she, a Hanoverian royal on the throne of her family's adopted land.
James, I am Mexican by heritage and American by naturalization and living in this country 75 years. I happen to love your Queen. She is very thoughtful and considerate and has done her duty all her life. I'm also Catholic so I Admire and love our Pope. Not Francis but John Paul the Great. We all have forms of respect for our heads of state. It's a custom. And unless people dress appropriately when in the presence of the pope and other religious men, women would come to see him in scanty dresses or low plunging necklines of tooda, all inappropriate in the presence of religious men. So they have a protocol sheet same as your Queen has for visiting people at her functions. Shows respect. I Admire that.
