I WISH the conqueror had a mace in the game. Flail just makes no sense. It's an absurdly overrated piece of trash - common in movies and games, but we have no information of whether flails were ever used in fights by actual soldiers/knights. Many weapons are mentioned very often in historical texts. But flails just aren't present when it comes to warfare. The mention flails do get is during peasant rebellions. A flail is originally a farmer's tool. It looks a little bit different than what conqueror has (there's a thick piece of iron-reinforced wood instead of a spikey ball on the end of the chain). It was used to smack wheat stalks in order to separate the seeds. During uprisings and rebellions, the peasants would either use the default flail, or switch the log for various metal objects. People would just use whatever could be used as a weapon (scythes, cleavers, sickles,...flails,...) regardless of how good of a weapon it actually made compared to what soldiers used. They couldn't really be picky. Knights on the other hand. To the best of our knowledge, they never used flails as a regular weapon. And it's easy to understand why. The weapon is a hazard to the user himself and any ally standing next to him. Tricky to manipulate and control properly. The idea people usually have is that it can reach behind shield, making is useful. But it's incredibly easy to block and the moment the chain starts curving around something, the ball loses a large part of its momentum. All in all, flail is pitifully inferior to a mace. There's a reason why maces were some of the most popular weapons in those ages. They are simple to control, very powerful and are among the very few weapons that can reliably hurt a person in plate armor. The medieval fan in me cries every time I see a flail in a game, or movie.
