- The movie cut, including an early interview with Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, is from "Linnutee tuuled" ("The Winds of the Milky Way"), 1977, by Lennart Meri (Estonian writer, film director, and statesman, President of Estonia from 1992 to 2001). The movie is describing the kinship, linguistic and cultural relationships of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Silver Medal at the New York Film Festival, 1979.

I visited Finland back in the 70's. The first Sami I was introduced to worked a community reindeer herd and in his front yard of his small modest house was a plains teepee. They used it for a smoker for meats and to process reindeer hides. Just like indigenous north American used to live in here. Exactly like it. 👍

I recently traced my family line to the Norwegian Sami. Even though it’s far back, I share their beliefs, I always wanted to be with the American Indians! I don’t fit in, now I see it’s because my soul walks , with my ancestors 💯

Oh I see some similarities between the indigenous tribes of the u.s. and these people of the great north. Mother nature is greatly respected by these people. My aunt helen's remains have been scattered on finland's soil. Also my late grandmother is also buried theere. I never got a chance to meet my late grandmother she died of t.b. when her children were still young.
These similarities do not even stop at Sami, pretty much all groups having their origins in northern eastern Eurasia share similarities with the natives of (northern America). Even Finns, although being influenced by Europeans and being more settled than their Sami and other Uralic speaking relatives in the east found striking similarities between themselves and native Americans when Finns arrived in the US as immigrants and settlers. Both had a deep rooted respect for nature, oral traditions going back millennia, slash-and-burn agriculture and sauna/sweat lodge. Finns were often also settled near native reserves, so the similarities were seen fairly easily.
I am a Sami descendant that briefly met Hopi and Navajo when I was young (before I knew I was related to Sami) and bonded with them as lost family. Now I understand why I felt that spiritual connection with them.

I am of Sami ancestors.... but 3rd generation American. though I don’t know much about it,, I remember my grandparents and their friends always talking Finn, and my grandmothers side of family were Sami..grandfather side were of larger Finn population. Both my grandparents were born in USA but their parents came out of Finland.. there are many Finns where I live... this is so interesting... but my life is comfortable,, I can only imagine how difficult it would have been for them

From sellers I found at first sight, apollo.ee should send abroad, ask the others by e-mail if they do, if needed. As it was released in small numbers, would be difficult to find any but the local seller.

Not a Sàmi but Suomi and Saami (Finnish and Sapmi) are cousin languages. Close related.

3:21 what a beautiful statement. The way I interpret it is as such: Life with out cultures would be like life with out music, which is also a reflection of culture. Also, that different cultures should be preserved, which means the ideals of Nationalism are endorsed to some degree which will preserve and strengthen the culture. All the different cultures compliment each other however when we mix them together, they're lost, that is to say, our modern idea of "Multiculturalism" is the ultimate destruction of the human race as we know it.
Nationalism is what nearly destroyed our cultures and languages, the states of which we lived in assimilated us into their cultures for that exact reason, only in a multicultural society can we live freely practicing our cultures, our languages and our way of life. We live in a multicultural North side by side with different ethnic groups all with their own cultures and languages that's how it should be, only then can we flourish by respecting eachother and coexisting.
Sami was traveling to the North of Africa most of them are in the north of Morocco and they called Berber or Amazigh they have blue eyes and are blond they live in the mountain Atlas, and they share culture specially same colour and signs used in the cloths and in necklace,rings ...etc ,more they have same morphology as Sami :)

Sami are in general a mixture of haplogroup I1 (First Northern Europeans, around the Baltic Sea area), and N (typical to Uralic peoples in today's Russia). Some Berbers have I2 (First Southern Europeans, today most frequent in Sardinia and Bosnia, less frequent in other Balkan countries and Spain). But, the blue eyes etc are more likely coming from the Germanic Vandals, who were assimilated into Berbers.

Most "samis" today are not true samis, this is the hard truth my friends. These false samis are people who came here relatively recently, mainly in the 1700s, 1800s and even in the 1900s. They learned our language and adopted our clothing and voila, they are sami too, almost by magic i'd say. They also got a foothold into reindeer husbandry early on, in early to mid 1800s and immediately started to push out the true samis from their ancient ways, using violence and threats, even murders in some cases, they spread like cancer and i tell you, most of todays reindeer herders are not true samis. They got people involved into politics early on, always benefiting their agenda. A huge part of the true samis are long gone from their ancient ways, many of them succumbed to alcohol abuse and suicide. This ethnic shift is the reason the reindeer business is in such turmoil. The consequences are conflicts, corruption, herds are oversized, lands are overgrazed beyond recognition, the reindeer is in very poor condition and the list just goes on.. They simply don't have the background the true samis had, who lived in tune with nature for centuries and centuries, they don't respect nature, all they care about is having the biggest herd, push others in order to gain lands, having power over others etc.. Do not be deceived my friends. Note that this is mostly true for northern Norway, i don't really know the local histories for northern Sweden and Finland, but there are strong indications that it's the same story there..
Does that mean that the Saami Parliament isn't "really" Saami? Does that mean that most of today's Saami activists and people aren't real Saami? Don't take my questions personally, I'm trying to understand. I'm a French guy learning Nortehrn Saami and interested in Saami culture.
Sami parliament is just a facade my friend, looks so convincing but is rotten inside.. They are just a puppet for the norwegian government. When you've learned sami and some of the culture you are a sami too my friend, why not? Since so many have done it before.

They really believe that everbody who speaks sami and wears a gákti is automatically a sami. Only the people who dare to face the truth know these things, truth always hurts at first. Here's a very common trait of those people; they love to use media to talk about how "sami" they are, like tv-shows, radio shows, facebook etc, to promote how "sami" they are, often wearing a gákti, they absolutely love it, to be in the spotlight about their "saminess".
