My mother made me a Sunbonnet Sue quilt when I was a baby! I found it when cleaning out her house 2 years ago. I didn’t know what it was called until I just watched your video!! I’m so excited you did this! I am now using the quilt to go over my legs when I’m sitting! I love it and yours is going to look just as cute!
I made a Sunbonnet Sue, Suspender Sam wall hanging from the Quilt-in-a-Day book a long time ago. I’ve been collecting reproduction fabric for a while to make a full quilt! So cute! I love all of Eleanor Burns Quilt-in-a-Day books! I’ve learned so much from them!
Thank You for this sun bonnet Sue, instructions the easy way. I like how you demonstrate each step. And especially the hand part. Being done both ways. I bet your quilt's going to look very nice when done. Looking forward to seeing it, and your next video upcoming.❤
Enjoyed this video even though I had to watch in two sessions. I had seen that purple tool before not knowing that it was called "The Purple Thang". Perfect name. Sue is definitely a classic pattern. Thanks !! ❤❤❤
I use this exact book and 18 different squares of material cutting out all four pieces of the pattern and then missed matched all of the 18 pieces so that no sunbonnet sue was the exact same and it came out quite darling
I like the way the second one looks better than the first or it could be an illusion from the polka dots on the fabric because the hand looks different to me. Yes, please show us the quilt when you’re done; and my compliments to the person who created that beautiful quilt from the jeans fabric
Growing up, my mom made a Sunbonnet Sue & Overall Sam quilt. So now when I see just Sunbonnet Sue. I miss Sam. LOL I do like your modern method of using fusible interfacing. I would have added a decorative trim to the bonnet! But your Sue is beautiful.

I use featherweight fusible interfacing exactly same method as you did except when you turn it out the fusible will be to the outside and you can press it down on your background fabric, sewing it down is a breeze , so quick and neat. Thought you might want to try that sometime. Love your channel, tutorials and the sharing of other quilters beautiful quilts.
@@lydiaaguilar2020 You are welcome, it is so quick and inexpensive, I use it on all my appliqué projects. Be sure before you sew it on that the fusible is on the right side of the fabric so when you turn it out you can fuse it to your background fabric. You never have it moving out of place as you are sewing it on the background.
I have made these several times over the years, Love them and used this book. I have blanket stitched mine onto the foundation block and then quilted around Sue. So much fun. I may have to get her out (the book) and make another! Thanks for the memories and inspiration to make another. Love your videos!
My favorite quilt pattern. Made one for my granddaughter and my great granddaughter. Going to use this method for the next one for my new granddaughter. What fun. I used raw edge appliqué for both. I also made an overall bill for the baby of a dear friend. I use 30’s retro’s. Will send a pic when I’m done. I already have some muslin blocks cut so I’ll use them. Thanks a bunch.❤❤❤
I like your suggestion to sew the hand & sleeve together first before sewing to the interfacing. Since the top of the shoe & top of the dress go under other parts I would leave those areas open for easier turning.
You pronounced Catalano like a pro! Thank you for the kudos.❤ It never crossed my mind to sew the hand to the arm, never! What an awesome tip! I look forward to seeing the finished quilt. ❤❤❤ Hope you have a great weekend and maybe an awesome barbecue??
I haven't read the previous comments. But SAVE YOUR FINGERS. Before you sew the interfacing to the fabric, cut a small slit. Extra small slit for the smaller pieces. It'll save your fingertips believe me! Lol.
We found 19 Sunbonnet Sue panels my mother did years ago, you know she doesn’t remember why she only did 19, might have been because my youngest sister was born around the time. We wanted to guilt it for her, our problem finding material that comes close to matching the original ones. The only way I know of to finish is make a few more and add them into the original ones.
Awesome!! You could also use the center as the portion where the sunbonnet sues are not. You could put your mother’s information there kind of like a label if that makes sense.
I have 6 - 18x18 cross stitched blocks of sunbonnet sue blocks that I have no idea what to do with them. I’m not sure if the appliqué one will work together in a quilt together. Thought about finding machine embroidery overall Sam’s and making some of them to fill in the gaps. Ideas?
Have you ever tried using a washable school stick to hold the applique pieces down on the background fabric? The washable school glue will wash out later; and you can avoid using pins. I always get cut, or poked, by pins when I am doing applique (by hand or by machine). Using the washable school glue has kept me from getting blood stains on my fabric. I have always thought that putting an old fashioned, black or brown, side button up boot on Sunbonnet Sue would look a lot better. I have never seen one made that way. I just wonder if anyone has the pattern to make the little Sunbonnet girls with their bloomers showing below their skirts? That jeans pocket quilt is beautiful.
Yes I use glue sticks sometimes but old habits die hard. We sell those at the shop daily. Both ways work good. As for the brown boots, what a great idea! I’ve never thought of that.
My son’s cat. Everytime I come to the sewing room she’s right there with me. She loves quilts. So much so that I made her a quilt and that’s where she goes! 😂
I made 12 Sun Bonnet Sue's for a quilt...turned out I has pisitioned the bonnet incorrectly. The wudest oart needed to be over her face & not over her shoulder...oops! CHOSE to rdmove all of the topstitchibg & reposition the Bonnet... lesson learned!!!
That denim quilt is amazing

You always inspire me Penny! So many quilts to make, so little time!
Thank you and yes that is true. So little time

That quilt is soooo cute!! That's a lot of work for sure
Thank you! 😊
I think I’d sew all my backings on, then I could watch fav tv program while cutting and flipping. Great idea
Thanks for the tip about the hand/arm 🤩
You bet! I hope you make one. They’re fun.
Wow this technique was amazing, even down to the shortcut for the hand. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yes the hands are different. I showed two ways of doing it. I also like the second one better. 😊

Thank you! I might have to try that. Although I love this stuff so much not sure I can alter it. 😂. It’s so easy!
That's a great idea thanks 👋

My mother in law made this same quilt for her grand daughters 47 yrs ago.
Love sun bonnet sue! Thank you so much.
Very cute
I am making strip quilt blocks but using only two color ways and they come out so pretty
That is an amazing quilt!
Excellent instructions. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!!
Sunbonnet Sun is going to be my next project thank you for your demo .

I always used the needle turn method until a couple years ago. Game changer!
Thank you so much, this quilt is on my bucket list.
I love Sun Bonnet Sue. Penny, you are naughty. You sell little scissors in your shop for snipping to the sewn line 😮. 😊
Yes I do! But they were in my bag I carry with me and not at my sewing table. It seems I might need another pair!! 😂
@@sewcharmingquiltshop: ABSOLUTELY !!!!!
Thank you for the tips. I have the exact book and have been wanting to make it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Great idea to sew hand fabric onto arm and sew both at once to interfacing!
I love this tutorial!! I can see this made in my favorite prim colors❤
This is a great way to do them I have 2 books of them. Thank you.
Me too!! I’ve made the squares with sunbonnet sue doing things. Cute!
Great job Barbara! ❤😊🎉
Thank you for sharing this video and new technique. Excellent tutorial.
Love the technique. Thank you for the video 😊
Beautiful made
Thank you!
Wow great job❤

You definitely can but this way is so easy I didn’t. 😊
I have that book! Never used it. Now I know your secrets. Thanks P.S. I have two Purple Thangs.

You might could find some old clothing that is close to YOUR Sue's that would match. GOOD LUCK !!!!
Sew cute!
Like this way, much easier than that I just done for a baby blanket
I have 6 - 18x18 cross stitched blocks of sunbonnet sue blocks that I have no idea what to do with them. I’m not sure if the appliqué one will work together in a quilt together.
Thought about finding machine embroidery overall Sam’s and making some of them to fill in the gaps. Ideas?
I think both ways would be cute!!!
You cd do a 3x5 layout; then put sashing in between and borders on to make it a little bigger. I bet it turns out adorable! 😃

Who's your Pawsome little helper? I saw the sweet little paw in the bottom right corner. 😺💗
My son’s cat. Everytime I come to the sewing room she’s right there with me. She loves quilts. So much so that I made her a quilt and that’s where she goes! 😂
I love the sunbonnet sue quilt pattern. Can you share with us how to do it ?
I thought I did! 😳
Cut your pieces with pinking shears and you don’t need to clip all those little snips.
Since you mentioned making 12, you could make some with seasonal fabrics. Can't you just see a St. Patrick's Day Sue?
❤
❤❤❤❤❤
What stitch are you using as you sew her to the 12" square. How close to the edge
Regular stitch and just close to the edge. You could do a decorative stitch or blanket stitch or anything.
Nice
Wow
Do you use the blanket stitch or a small zigzag?
If I hand stitch them down I use a blind stitch. I stitched these by machine.
This reminded me of Peppa Pig...lol... no I have not been drinking 😂😅😂😅
Hahaha
I remember Sunbonnet Sue had a pinafore on actually. That way the dress sleeve would MATCH the dress and the pinafore would show the definition.
There are lots of different versions. 😁
Do you have the Sun Bonnet Sue book in your shop? Does it have SunBonnet Sam in the book?
Yes! The link is in the description
you hat u did it with flowers on instead of the poke dots thats ok
Why not just make the hand a U shape, with an open end underneath the arm. So much easier to tun than a rounded shape.
You could. In quilting there are lots of ways to do things. I was just showing a couple different ways.
Great handy 👌 tip to save time ⏲ 👍 🇦🇺💜🪡🧵🦘
