Thanks for watching, everybody. I'm so glad you're here. One little bit that got cut from this video for time was that the Autoweek Under 30 gig came because my friend and colleague Matt Weaver recommended me for it, and I'm forever grateful for that. People make a huge difference in this industry, and I wouldn't be in it without them
I rarely engage with any videos but felt compelled to after what you say from 18:27 on. Everybody regardless of their job or hobby needs to hear this, and as a 34 year old who just recently learned this same lesson the hard way, thank you for talking about it. You don't know how much it means to hear this conveyed so eloquently.
As a dad a couple things in this video hit home. Even thoug shes only 14 months old, I try as much as I can to show my daughter women in male dominated fields or hobbies so she knows she can do it too. At this point it's probably just practice to keep myself cognizant but I'm glad to hear that makes a difference. I was also surprised to hear you got your spark in your teens from something you were initially not interested in at all. That pressure to have a career you aspire to starts as a toddler and only increases until you get through highschool. I hope at least on my end I can push my kids to have experiences and let aspirations come on their own.
Wow! Your enthusiasm is off the charts! Great info and a nice pep talk... You know, I think I'll start my next YT video project. Thanks, Alanis. Also, I think about Texas World Speedway, A.J. Foyt, and the Oldsmobile Aerotech once a month. I love that story.
Thank you for doing this video. Ever since I saw you on Doug's channel, I knew you were serious about auto journalism. Your channel is great and will only become better for sure. The advice you gave towards the end was spot-on. I'm a trucker and witness an entire nation of people who dislike their job. Or find self-worth only through their career and social status. Not sure how to end this paragraph, but just know that water has never left the earth until spaceships. Thank you.
This is such a lovely comment. Thank you for making it. I really appreciate that you came over here from Doug’s channel, and I wish you many great and safe days on the road
As a 20 year old in college for photo/film, 18:30 onwards was so valuable to me, I’m excited for the future, thank you for helping me realize that a dream job shouldn’t be the only goal, and that we live not to work, but to live, I love that, thank you
And here I thought you were only doing it for "Bobs" guy. Will be waiting for the day that you can talk about Cars & Bids, if that day can ever come. When I saw your appearance on Doug's channel awhile back, I was impressed with your knowledge of cars. Now I know why. Thank you for sharing your story and for offering advice for people who want to pursue their dream. As someone who just started a TH-cam channel nearly a year ago, I will use some of your tips to help go forward as this will be more of hobby (for now).
Seeing you so young in the intro and hearing your same voice was super trippy!! I found you while watching a Doug livestream when people were being gross and awful because you were a woman, and some people were kicking back saying how you were actually quite a Big Deal in the car journalism world, so I looked you up because I could tell that you were way more than just "Doug's friend" just by the way you carried yourself. And, yep, you are a very Big Deal in the car journalism world. It's too bad that more people don't understand who you are. (But I strongly relate because in the Flight Sim world, people wonder why more people don't know who I am, but that's how the world works.) Anyway, when you become more famous than Doug and Hoovie (and please teach them how to drive a stick as well as you do), I can say that I knew you before you were TH-cam-famous! Maybe I will see you co-host an IndyCar or F1 event some day! I still wonder what it's like to be married to someone who is half-man/half-cat, though. ;-)
This comment made me smile so much. Thank you for caring about me (and how people reacted to me!), and thanks for looking me up. Flight Sims are so cool - tons of respect for that skill and what you've done there
@@AlanisKing awwww, I do care. And I support women in motorsport/car culture so much; all brains work differently, and there is so much to offer when everyone is involved. Too much is missed out on when there is gatekeeping, especially by gender.
I follow you since your first video w Doug. Since then I love to watch your videos. Before this video I didn’t understood how much effort and passion into what you are doing but I saw that you were on top of your game with such an incredible talent. Today’s video is bittersweet but it gives us the right to pursue our passion and dreams. Thank you for that and take care. Thanks also to your husband behind the camera who’s probably very talented and proud 😊
You’re a breath of fresh air. This was informative, educational and fun…as always. Thank you for sharing some of your history with us and for letting your personality shine through.
Great video Alanis. Even at your young age you can share a lot of wisdom with other people up and down the age range, and that will surely help others. It took me until my 50s to realize some of these things. Nice to see pics and videos of an even younger Alanis working her way up through life -- as a girl dad, that always warms my heart. Keep up the good work!
What an enjoyable and inspring tale--thanks for sharing it, Alanis. When I graduated from college far more years ago than I care to admit, I wanted to get into automotive journalism and had no clue how to do it, short of writing a few feeble inquiries to magazines (TH-cam and the internet were a long way off). Obviously, it didn't work out for me quite like it has for you. Also: thumbs up for your Mazdaspeed Miata backdrop--gorgeous car with a perfect wheel/tire combo!
I hope to do one! It's all about availability, and usually, Texas availability is limited. They'll just occasionally call me when they're moving a car from the East Coast to the West Coast and ask to drop it off in the middle
hell of a way to start chasing a dream Alanis, I got the opportunity back in 2009 to drive Talladega in a retired Stock car and gained a whole new respect for NASCAR drivers. Fast forward to 2018 and ended up owning a Miata. Life, uhhh, finds a way.
Awesome vid as usual. Thanks for the great insight on your story. I loved reading your articles on Jalopnik, but I'm still miffed at Doug for letting you go from CaB. His loss though, because you're killing it now!
Thanks Alanis! Was not expecting the excellent segment about focusing on living your life. So many inspiring words in this video. Thanks again- you rock!
This was such a great video Alanis. Kudos for all that you have been able to do in the industry, and thank you for sharing all of your advice and insights. That last point was so powerful...
I did too, because I didn’t see the little “home videos” my husband put in until he showed me the finished product. It was so sweet. Thank you for watching 💚
What a wild way to come across your passion. I'm glad you did though! Definitely a good take on not _NEEDING_ to have that dream job. I feel like too many people obsess over it where as I've never stayed in one place too long.
As a salaried employee, I get pressure to put in 50, 60 sometimes 70 hours/week. I tell my boss what you mentioned, "I am working so I can live, I am not living so I can work". If they want to fire me then I'll find another job but I've been there for 3 years and they have left me alone so far, but I only put in 40-45 hours/week.
Awesome story Alanis, thanks for sharing! It’s great that you got exposure to the automotive industry at a younger age and were able to channel that into a career from early on! I wish I had started a while ago but, hey, better late than never! I think building on what you said for TH-cam is to find a niche that no one is covering and focus on that; that’s what I’m trying to do on my channel - bring a unique perspective that (so far) I haven’t seen anyone cover on TH-cam.
Very cool look into your journey, from genesis to present. I'd be interested in reading your F1 book. Being it's the only sport I follow I'm always keen to learn more 😉👍
I try to make them quick, too! I care about all the brands I partner with (I say no to others) and I want y'all to care too, but I also understand that if it's not quick or interesting, people will be tempted to skip : )
What a refreshing video. Clearly explaining that success is not a given. It takes hard work, dedication, staying power and a bit of luck. Good for you Alanis, I truly hope that this works out for you (and your husband). Keep the videos comin’
I really enjoyed this video. I've always wondered how you got started reviewing cars. I started watching you when you were first on Doug Demuro's TH-cam channel & then I saw the videos that you did on the Cars & Bids TH-cam channel & your own channel. I even saw the video that you did on Jay Leno's Garage TH-cam channel & I really loved watching that video. I really love watching all the videos that you do. I hope that this opens the door to more women who want to review cars on TH-cam. Keep up the great work.
Last bit of this is so real. I meet so many people chasing "dream jobs" that would obviously be happier doing the portions of that job they actually enjoy as a hobby while taking up a much less stressful/grind-y 9-5.
Alanis, you really are a joy, and your videos are always so pleasant to watch. I love that you use Classical music where so many others use heavier soundtracks, and really focus on the little realities of everything. You and your husband do amazing things!
Wired: _slaps trunk of car_ "You can fit so many Alanises into this baby." Inspired: _Alanis climbs into trunk_ "You can get so much audience engagement out of this baby." This was such a cool overview of your career along with some really actionable advice. I'm (about) your age, so hearing how the idea of networking has evolved is both surprising and meshes really well with my lived experience.
Thank you so much for watching. What’s wild is that the trunk thing started as just a random inclination, and then I was like: “Oh! Everyone loves this! I love this too? I guess we’re doing it every time!”
I enjoyed hearing your story, and you seem cool. It's great to see more women succeeding in the automotive media industry. Such profound words to conclude with.
What a journey you have been on. Your on-screen personality and energy is wonderful, and the advice here is great for people in any field, not just automotive journalism. You have a dream job, and you certainly deserve it, and we are very glad that you do and we are lucky to have these great videos of yours.
@@AlanisKing so I’m one of those people who had their dream job. And lost it. I threw everything into it. I foolishly thought my hard work and loyalty would be rewarded and reciprocated. And it wasn’t. I was cast aside by a company who was only interested in continuing to pay their hallway of Vice Presidents. Time passed. I found a new dream, a new dream job. Loved it. And got laid off from that as well. So I echo everything you said about work/life balance and would gladly add that you should always use your PTO and all the benefits your job offers. And the minute you roll out of work, that’s now your time - leave work and work drama at work. Don’t check work email at home and enforce those work/life boundaries.
Thank you for sharing it, you're an entertaining story teller. It's really cool you've met giants of the auto racing community. I would probably tattoo my photo with Lewis Hamilton if I ever had one taken.
It's kind of unbelievable when I stop and think about it. The coolest thing is when I'm doing something and I go: "Think about what 15-year-old Alanis would feel like right here." It's amazing
Thank you for sharing this video, Alanis. Personally I think these types of videos are so important. It's easy for viewers (and kids trying to decide what they want to do when they grow up) to see all the fun that comes with having a dream job like this, but because stories like this are so rare they don't see the other side, and all the work it takes to get to where you are now. Sharing where you are now, where you were, and how you got here is so important for future generations that may decide they want to follow in your footsteps, but wouldn't otherwise have the resources or knowledge of how to get there. This is the exact kind of knowledge and experience that should be shared for everyone to see, not hidden away and protected.
Appreciate this so much. That was my goal here, and I'm so glad it helped. I often think about being a kid and how we were given a lot of the wrong ideas about our future paths (go to a four-year university and get a prestigious job, or else), and I just want people to know they have options! Thank you for watching
@@AlanisKing Totally agree! I've always hated the pressure we put on kids to go straight from high school to a four-year, and know exactly what you want to do from an early age. There's a world of opportunity out there, and it's ok to not have the answers immediately. I personally took 4 years between graduating and going to university, and I'm glad I did because it gave me the time to understand what I actually wanted, instead of spending a lot of money and time on a degree I would have resented. These kinds of stories are important to share.
Every video of yours feels handmade. I understand how much grueling work there is to make it that way - from setting the shot, retaking lines 20 times, and lining the stock footage / music cuts ‘juuuust right’. I wish you continued success on this TH-cam journey, Alanis!
Best advice I've ever heard was don't wait until you're "ready." Don't spend a bunch on money on production kit. Work with what you got and start. right. now.
hell yeah brother, glad to see you've popped off & slayed biggly, looking forward to seeing what the future brings you (this comment is sponsored by APEX Coffee)
I'll be the weird one I suppose and came to your channel via your episode on collector car feed. But I knew about you previously from cars and bids and the donut podcast. Lots of awesome insights, especially for someone like me making money on TH-cam but small scale, a nights and weekends passion. I love putting projects together and do want to start putting myself out there in a way to build community/following, thanks for the insights!
Amusing that your interest in cars started from attending a NASCAR race that your mom dragged you along, we should really thank your mom! 😄 Really solid piece of life-advice on what it means to have a dream job as well. Wish you and your cat-husband best of luck on your TH-cam journey and what ever else you may wish to do!
This channel is a wealth of information. This was inspiring to watch and really opened my eyes to the possibilities within myself. It really is about setting goals, breaking them down, and chiseling away- but also being vulnerable and open to new experiences and things I may not be good at. I’ve never had anyone sit me down and road map how to achieve what I want, so thank you for making this. I love finding new channels to come back to. Good luck guys!
I'm so grateful that you've made this video! Cars are my absolute favourite thing in the world but with the way things are going at the moment I can't figure out how I could make a career in the car industry. Now, I realise that while it would be a dream, it's not necessary to work in the industry to fulfil my passion for cars! Great video as always. 🙏
I’ve said it before on other videos and I’ll say it again.. you deserve way more subscribers and there will be a time when it happens but until then.. I’ll keep watching 🤘🏽
Congrats on getting invited to the Miata event, that's really awesome and a great first step. Your channel will likely continue to grow.. people who are into your review style will likely continue to show up and subscribe.
It's good to see how you got to where you are. I've noticed that a LOT of auto journos are nepo babies whose dads either invented something or run something, but of course that didn't give them any advantage in life 🙄 You don't seem to have that story, which is refreshing. I hope this channel continues to grow. 🙂
As someone who is just over 30, the last bit of this hit really hard. Sometimes, it's easy to forget that the most important thing is to enjoy the life you're living. Thanks for the reminder!
It really does pay to just go out and do it. What you stated about dream jobs and life separation is so important too. Jobs can never be the end all, be all. We must search for the *lifestyle* we want to live, and not the big single goal
Thanks for watching, everybody. I'm so glad you're here.

This was such a cool overview of your career along with some really actionable advice.
Ahhhh thank you so much 💚
What a journey you have been on. Your on-screen personality and energy is wonderful, and the advice here is great for people in any field, not just automotive journalism. You have a dream job, and you certainly deserve it, and we are very glad that you do and we are lucky to have these great videos of yours.
This made me smile a lot. Thank you so much for saying it
I thumbs up for the thickness
Keep up the good work. Also, love the OG Yugioh shirt
Thank you so much 🫡🫡
Fantastic advice, Alanis.
Thank you Dave!
I've been working from 50 to 75 hours a week for decades. Now- at 67 years old - I never look back and wish I would have worked more.
Yes! Exactly. I hope you find so much joy in retirement
@AlanisKing Retirement? I'm still doing 50 hours a week. I said I worked, I didn't say I made a lot of money or smart financial decisions.
Dream jobs are still jobs . Live life! 😆
Yes! You’ve got it!
What a great video. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Keep up the good work!!
Ahhhh thank you so much! Truly!
@@AlanisKing I hope to start my own channel soon so thanks for the advice!!
That is such an honor. Wow. Because it’s just us two working on it, it really is handmade. Thank you for describing it that way
That Yu-Gi-Oh shirt is awesome!
Thank you 🫡🫡
Just continue with the same .. set up.. even your simple outfit..
Thank s for read my comments 😮😮😮😮
Thanks for sharing your journey! You make a wonderful point about how networking shouldn't be simply a transactional one.
It’s so important! Thank you for watching 🫡
Keep doing you Alanis! Big fan since the DRS podcast days
Ahhhh thank you so much for being here
Best advice I've ever heard was don't wait until you're "ready." Don't spend a bunch on money on production kit. Work with what you got and start. right. now.
Great video/story! Ive been following u since ive seen ya on cars n bids. Subscribed!!!!!
Damn that cars and bids era was really glossed over. I really would like to know what happened, but I respect your privacy of course
I unfortunately can’t really share!
I will say I found you from Doug's videos
Tons of people have! And I’m so glad they’re here, you included
@@AlanisKing I do miss you from his shows, would you ever consider doing more with him? guest star on the POD maybe?
Long live the King 👌

You always wear the nicest leggings

Step 1: be built like a Pixar mom
I'll be the weird one I suppose and came to your channel via your episode on collector car feed.
But I knew about you previously from cars and bids and the donut podcast.
Lots of awesome insights, especially for someone like me making money on TH-cam but small scale, a nights and weekends passion. I love putting projects together and do want to start putting myself out there in a way to build community/following, thanks for the insights!
Ahhhh thank you for being here! I’m so glad it was helpful
You are like a best friend to me
Thanks for sharing your story, Alanis. You showed the haters in the C&B comment section that living well is the best revenge!
So many C&B commenters were as lovely as the others were mean! Thanks for watching. Appreciate you
Amusing that your interest in cars started from attending a NASCAR race that your mom dragged you along, we should really thank your mom! 😄
Really solid piece of life-advice on what it means to have a dream job as well. Wish you and your cat-husband best of luck on your TH-cam journey and what ever else you may wish to do!
Thank you so much 💚 thanks mom!
So what you’re saying is … it’s all your Mom’s fault?
(Thanks Jodi!)
So happy for you and your husband
“Alan Is King!!”
Hahahaha yes, all her fault
Thanks for this Alanis! I’ve been reading your stuff for years, and been trying to get my channel off the ground for a hot minute now.
You’ve got this! Thanks for all your support 💚
This made my smile a lot. Thank you so much for saying it. I’m really glad the video was helpful for you!
Alanis, were you at Texas World Speedway for the World Racing League “last” race on May 30, 2015?
It's possible! I can't remember. I was out there a lot
Alanis King TH-cam Channel: Come for the girl in the Trunk, stay for the deep dive on the car history
That’s the goal 🫡🫡
I'm so grateful that you've made this video! Cars are my absolute favourite thing in the world but with the way things are going at the moment I can't figure out how I could make a career in the car industry. Now, I realise that while it would be a dream, it's not necessary to work in the industry to fulfil my passion for cars! Great video as always. 🙏
This made me smile. You get it. Focus on loving your life first 💚
I’ve said it before on other videos and I’ll say it again.. you deserve way more subscribers and there will be a time when it happens but until then.. I’ll keep watching 🤘🏽
Always appreciate you saying this. Thank you for being here
I always root for my favorite ex-Jalop writers, looking forward to more videos on this channel. Wishing you all the success, cheers from Germany!
Awww thank you 💚 cheers to Germany!
Congrats on getting invited to the Miata event, that's really awesome and a great first step. Your channel will likely continue to grow.. people who are into your review style will likely continue to show up and subscribe.
Thank you. It was so exciting. Thanks for being here!
It's good to see how you got to where you are. I've noticed that a LOT of auto journos are nepo babies whose dads either invented something or run something, but of course that didn't give them any advantage in life 🙄
You don't seem to have that story, which is refreshing. I hope this channel continues to grow. 🙂
Awwwww thank you. Appreciate this so much
As someone who is just over 30, the last bit of this hit really hard. Sometimes, it's easy to forget that the most important thing is to enjoy the life you're living. Thanks for the reminder!
Of course. Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for the videos and the effort that goes into them Alanis!! It was great to hear your story and your advice.
Thank you 💚
Another good video,Alanis. We'd love to work with you on our new product. We have reached out to you

You graduated high school in 2014?! So did I!!! Are you also a 96 baby?
95!
Three cheers for Alanis King! The most awesome and best car reviewer there is! 🥳🥳
Love this video and your words of wisdom!
Thank you so much for your support, Francisco. It makes our day. We’re so glad you’re here
Excellent Excellent Excellent video! Great work Alanis!
Ahhhh thank you 🤠
It really does pay to just go out and do it.
What you stated about dream jobs and life separation is so important too. Jobs can never be the end all, be all. We must search for the *lifestyle* we want to live, and not the big single goal
Yes! Exactly!
the who in the background won my like
Great advice for a respectable price. Thanks Alanis
Thank you 🤠
Keep doing what you do Alanis and hubby!!!
