I would love to see a raw cut of you taking a single poptune off from spotify, and just let it rip. I know your vid would be de-monitized, but thats something i do constantly and i would love to see how you go about it.
Thank you for all of your videos. I went to see you in Manchester, UK at the Hole in The Wall. First gig i had been to in years, a really enjoyable night. together with listening to first-class musicians. Unfortunately, i couldn't buy any of the music, as i believe it had been stolen.Hope to see you and the band members again. Thanks for the music!
Just wanted to pop in after a month or so from watching this video to convey my thanks! I play saxophone just for fun, so I don't have a lot of experience, and I'm learning on my own, and at my own pace. I just got to say, that after doing this exercise just once, and even after a few weeks break from playing, I got the best tone out of my tenor in maybe ever. Just straight out of the gates. Especially in the lower register where in the past I've kind of "glided" from a note an octave higher to my target low note. Recognizing the FEEL of the embouchure before playing a note, and concentrating on that sensation helped me tremendously. So thank you again for this gem of a lesson!
@@bobreynolds I'm really grateful that you take the time to share your insight on here. Not just the technical side, but just your experiences as a working musician as well. Really valuable stuff!
Thanks Bob for sharing this. I am too feeling that I am at my part of the journey that there are so many things that need my attention and taking care of (work, kids, relationship, and so on) that practicing my instrument became a really hard task, almost impossible. And I too have compared it to my college days when a day that I wouldn’t practice for 4 hours would be a bad day. So thank you for letting me feel that I’m not alone here 😊 In the past week I try to wake up earlier than usual and have about 40 min of practice before anyone else wakes up. I find that I am much more focused in these early hours, rather than waiting for all the days’ tasks are done, and I find myself exhausted late at night and without motivation to grab my instrument. And it feels much better to start the day after that I made something meaningful to me. I love your ‘just do something with your instrument for 5 minutes, and then you passed the hardest barrier’ tip. I need to think how to take it to my own instruments (I am a strings guy - Guitar, Oud and Violin) but it’s really a great point. Thanks
I've found that the older I get, and more responsibilities, it has to happen at the beginning of the day or it doesn't happen (well, except nights I have shows Lol). My teacher in college, George Garzone, used to (and I believe still does) wake up to practice at 5 AM... but he lives out in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors.
1:22, all the inspiration to get my day going today. I'll watch the rest throughout the week. Thank you Bob for holding this space. whenever I feel stuck or not sure where to start your channel opens the ears and the mind.
"Just picking up the instrument" is the one thing I can say I've stuck to since I started clarinet almost 4 years ago. I do it everyday. I probably haven't made as much progress as most people, but I also haven't quit! But, man, I also write code as my job and after a long day of racking my brain the clarinet sure does feel daunting. It's funny to watch myself find other things to do to put it off an hour or two. I just try to remember this Steven Pressfield quote “Don’t prepare. Begin.” from the author’s 2011 book Do the Work. I actually learned about that quote from Circa Survive's song "Always Begin". Thanks, Bob, the more I grow the more useful your videos become, and they always inspire me to keep going.
Almost every video you put out is a gem as simple as some might seem at first. I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom and experiences to everyone specially us that are just starting our journey!
Thanks for the exercise! I’m enjoying using it in my sound routine. Which note should sound when playing the neck tones for, alto, Bari and soprano? It would be great to see a video of your different approaches for working on intonation throughout a practice session as well!
Instead of “silly” maybe you mean something like “simpler than you think it should be.” I also adopt a “little by little” approach to practice lately. As long as I get some time in, it’s a good day. An hour is a great day. Any more than that and it almost feels like overkill but I’ll take it as a bonus.
I like to play around with acoustic effects. Ever room in my house sounds different. I’ll walk around with my tenor hanging around my neck going from room to room and even my outside deck area. I can hear myself play which is very interesting.
Thank uou for the advice and enckuragement.I've been playing for more than a few years, and sometimes I don't even want to open my sax case and take out my horn.
try leaving it out, on a (safely placed) stand. leave a glass of water nearby to soak some reed 5 mins before you begin. play ALONG TO MUSIC for 5-7 mins a day and then stop. Don't let yourself do more for at least a week. See what happens.
I felt a lot of this video. One thing I really struggle with is feeling rested; oftentimes I can get a good amount of sleep but still not feel rested when I wake up in the morning, so on days I'm not working I find myself staying in bed until late in the morning, and then when I'm finally up I'm just tired and unmotivated. I'm often using caffeine as a crutch, and truthfully, there is something about playing really energizes me, but it's so hard to just start.
starting is the hardest part. sometimes the staying in bed is counterproductive and we'll actually feel more rested if just get up and go and (perhaps) nap later. I've never been the best at this, but i find that inconsistent wake times DEFINITELY mess with my energy.
great thought for me it is what it "sounds like" but when it is only me, that works but there is a correlation to that feel too. But then when I saw the bit at the end for the Scene it made me think do you ever get to hang out with Matt Kalin?
I can't remember where I saw it but there was a suggestion to play just a mouthpiece alone and that would blow on tenor a concert G. Reminds me I need to try that again
I am still at Film School but the number 1 question I have often asked myself is how would I remain 'in it' when I would one day leave the school. It is going to happen and then the real struggle would be to find the same environment which keeps me motivated without the million other things vying for my attention.
Interesting notion, I never really did music school in your sense, but I do want to take the horn to the local college to use their rooms just to ensure some private/uninterrupted sessions
As a current music student who also has adhd, I find that it’s almost impossible to get myself to practice regularly if I’m not in the right environment. I remember seeing a video from another channel where he talked about how it’s much easier to change our environment to fit ourselves and what conditions we need to be productive/happy being productive
Adhd player here. I play outdoors. I sit at the right front seat of my car and try to find a spot that no one would be bothered. No excuses -> quality practice
Does it matter where you push the mouthpiece onto the neck for tuning to the concert E ? Or should you match the E regardless of mouthpiece position on the cork?
Watching you play in your kitchen made me realize I need to get a stand and have the sax visible and out of the case, I love it a lot but I’m new so I never thought of it like a guiatr would be out of the case of a stand of something, practicing in between the day is like a junkie getting a fix …. Prefect
Bob: I going to practice now. Will do the neck and mouth piece exercise. Have you been in the water? I have video of me playing. I think you would be interested in how it came about. Fun stuff. Tim Tuthill
I average drive about 6 or more hours today and this morning I literally just grabbed mouthpiece and neck as to blow on the ride all day maybe to strengthen embouchure ? Anyone find this beneficial in any way ?!

Hi Bob, which notes should they be if we apply this exercise to Alto neck and Soprano neck?
Interesting notion, I never really did music school in your sense, but I do want to take the horn to the local college to use their rooms just to ensure some private/uninterrupted sessions
Spotify has a album called something like "Cello Drones" with all notes and the tracks are a few minutes long. I use it for long tones and warmups.
there's also www.dronetonetool.com/ and (a new fav recommended to me by a studio member) music.apple.com/us/album/the-tuning-c-d-a-440/319589901

they are very nice mpcs but there's something about Links I've not been able to shake...even though I'm not quite there yet.
articulation is something that I've never worked on and don't really know how to work on that independent of doing a transcription

What color is your room? Dark blue or really black?
