Every once in a long time, an overbearingly hyped beverage justifies all the commotion. Monkey 47 is one of those. Several years ago, a friend of mine was in a lounge at Frankfurt International Airport. He noticed the bottle, asked "Monkey 47? What the Hell?" He tried it, brought back a bottle from the duty free shop, and tried it out on me. It got a glowing review from several influential critics and suddenly you couldn't find the stuff for several months. It's my favorite, along with Barr Hill Gin. Disclaimer: I live in Vermont where Barr Hill is distilled, so I'm obligated to enjoy it. ☺

I'm late to the party with my comment, but you're also late to the party with trying this. First, there are countless gins from Germany, but this might be the most popular one. And for a reason. It's one of my all-time favourites. You did a great job describing it, it's really full and thick, but incredibly well balanced. I like how you came up with the picture of a symphony of flavours! I always imagine myself in a deep forest when drinking it. Mixed with tonic, you don't really need a lot of gin since it's so intense. Yes, it's expensive, even in Germany, but well worth it!

Finally got around to trying this gem. I just returned from work (Las Vegas) six weeks and picked up a bottle there as it’s easier to find than where I live in Canada (Calgary) and of course the price was much better. 750 ml 70$ US approx 95$ CDN the same size bottle in Canada is approximately 140$
I find this gin to be extremely smooth with a very nice and mild finish. Although it has 47% proof alcohol you can not by any means taste the burn. Only refreshing botanicals which are 47 of them as well. I really like this gin but not for the price. IMO there are other great gins for half the price.
Great video and always enjoy watching your reviews.

Hi Bobby, I am from the Black Forest region (mainly spruces btw, not pines 😉) and I kinda grew up with this gin ginwise. The region is quite famous for distilling, mainly fruit brandy, which is als used in Black Forest cake. In the last few years more and more distilleries in the region started to make their own gins, some of them really good. My current favorite is the Boar Blackforest Premium Dry Gin, only a few kilometers down the road from the Monkey 47 Distillery. Sadly the prices seem to be quite high in the UK, they are 25-30 £ here in Germany (for both Monkey 47 and Boar). Cheers from Germany!

You absolutely should try „Doppelwacholder“ from the Freimeister Kollektiv. I would describe this gin as like standing at 10am in the foggy Black Forest and taking the full Dosis of needle trees. It’s a rather budget gin (here in Germany) and not so well known. But the name „Doppelwacholder“ translates to „double juniper“ and I think it tastes absolutely gorgeous.
Edit: First you should taste the gin without tonic. Then try it with Fever Tree mediterran.

I don't think you have a lot of experience with this gin at all...
I'm collecting monkey 47 gin for 7 years now and recently visited the distillery in the Schwarzwald.
You immediately poured tonic over this precious gin instead of tasting/drinking it pure first.😂 This is not a gin to throw down your throat with whatever tonic you want. First you need to drink it on ice, pure without the fuzz. And if you want to add a proper tonic, then use the Thomas Henry tonic they recommend. Add ice and orangepeel and that's is. You can tell you didn't read the whole page. 🤔

I have a bottle of Monkey 47 and of Gunpower. Both have tons of botanicals and neither of these are my favorite gins either alone or mixed. In my opinion the botanicals just get muddled, sort of like mixing different colors of paint until the color is bland. In my early days of cooking, I often tried to put too many different spices in my cooking, and what I found was that the flavor was lost, not enhanced.

Had one in a pub in Dublin. Liked it didn't know it was German. Thought it was Irish. Found it here in US, I agree, it's good but overpriced.

Great review, Mr. Freeman. Thank you. You have taken on the german gins as suggested. M47 is good, but take my word for it, Ferdinand Saar Gin is so much better. Out of this world no less. Unfortunately so is the price. I quite follow you there too.
Also I hope you get a chance to review Greenhook Ginsmiths American Dry gin soon. Very recommendable.
Right now I´m t trying a little sip of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin. Not bad at all but a little heavy on the anis spice and some perfume. Fun fact: Gunpowder gin uses a rabbit with antlers as a logo. Same as a lovely Norwegian gin called "Harahorn". Take care.

You just tasted the best gin in the world and you immediately killed it by mixing it with tonic without tasting it first in order to enjoy its flavors and aromas.
    Have some respect man.

This is the only gin (so far) that I'm happy to sip neat. I agree with you that there's a ton going on there flavor-wise that can be a bit confusing but still every sip of it still feels new to me, and I love that.
Honestly took a bit of a gasp when you mixed it with tonic haha

If not for the price, I would have at least tried this one already. I have to say though, your review doesn't make me any more likely to ever buy a bottle. It sounds over-priced, if not over-rated.

One of the worst Gins for me. Just "The Duke Munich Dry Gin" is worse for me.
Funny that i as a German do not like a lot of German Gins.
But Gin Sul and Siegfried Gin are quite nice.

Have had this and no way worth the price for 500 mill, too complex and not a value choice. Can get London #3 @700 mill for cheaper and much more enjoyable. Personal opinion only.
