    Funny thing is there was one emperor who because he was traumatized by the cruelness of his father's concubines, had only one queen for all his life. And he had children with no problem. And then his son succeeded and filled his harem with endless women. And one of them killed every children he had so he died...childless.... so is harem that usefull?

      Yeah the purpose of big harem is not only for pleasure and reproduction of heirs but also to ensure that you have political supporters. That is why usually women who are promoted to higher position in the harem do have strong family background.

      @Alex Y Foot binding originated from 10th century by emperor Li Yu of Southern Tang, just before Song Dynasty. The practice began from Southern China then eventually spreading up North. Since then, foot binding becomes more widespread during the 12th century (which is around Song Dynasty). Thanks for pointing that out btw.

    foot binding was among Han people and the emperor's women were mainly from Man people who didn't adopt foot binding tradition so your information was not accurate. also, royal Man women used to wear a type of high heel shoes and the bond small feet wouldn't fit into the shoes at all so it's impossible that those women had foot binding. please, do your research and use your logic for work!!!!!!!

  • @Xilex90
    @Xilex90 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    what most people don't realize is that the term harem did not originate with the women or men that a nobleman or emperor has, but rather a harem was a place where the women, eunuchs, and female servants of the palace would live. A sort of inner sanctum filled with all the comforts that they would need or desire in an effort to both keep them close at hand, as well as protect them from outside men who might have ill intentions. only husbands and male children, and rare invited guests were permitted to enter the harem.
    somewhere along the line, westerners got the term harem mixed up and assumed the harem was the group of women themselves, and somehow that definition stuck.
    the modern usage of the word Harem is a bit of a misnomer, but it's unlikely to be corrected.
    Just thought i'd drop some knowledge on you.

      The Manchus adopted the existing "Back Palace" ranking system for the harem women, & modified it to form their own selection criteria (e.g. The candidates for Imperial consorts must bear Manchurian noble/high official blood , no foot binding, be able to read & write at a certain level, ......etc.) Ladies in waiting might be exempted from the literacy requirement, but beauty was still the primary criteria.

      The rulers of qing were manchus, but they still ruled from china and adopted chinese culture and bureaucracy. We dont speak manchu for a reason.
      Also, having rulers from different ethnic group is pretty common. Queen elizabeth family is from german origin, the king of spain is from french origin, etc...
