Yeah it's a valid option if you're bored of playing the scandi line. Playing straight in to the scandi is still the strongest response but this isn't much worse. And it's unlikely a beginner or maybe intermediate scandi player will have faced this often prior.

This is one of my favorite openings for white! I like to play offbeat ("incorrect") lines in the Queen's Gambit (going for b4 asap), the Polish opening (early b5), the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit (c4 after exd4; before N-c3), and the Grob's Attack (early g5); in most of these you get a fighting asymmetrical game, in which your opponent is not likely to know the best moves. None of it is strictly 100% sound, but even strong players can''t play like a chess engine so it rarely matters.
    ...
What I can say about the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is that it's easy to play, because it has a sort of mechanical nature. You can just follow a few reliable rules of thumb rather than memorize exact move sequences. These are the rules, in order of priority:
    - Do not take an enemy piece unless the opponent blunderer a free piece.
    - If the opponent took your piece, retake that piece in a way that develops.
    - If you can push a pawn to displace an enemy piece, push that pawn.
    - Develop a piece to take at least one good move away from the opponent.
    - If you have no such developing moves, it is time for you to castle.
    ...
These rules get you through the early game pretty much entirely. Occasionally you will note an exception to these rules in a certain position, which is all that you need to actually memorize. Here's another way to look at the rules:
    - Displace enemy pieces.
    - Keep tension in the center.
    - Develop your pieces.
Note that if you mix the order of these rules up, you sometimes don't push pawns to relieve tension and displace knights. Those lines... some of them are fine. But the pawn push is pretty much always better. That's why I don't like to operate too simply, with "keep the tension"; there are moments where you gain advantage by pawn advances.
    ...
An even simpler rule in the gambit:
    - Try not to have pieces on squares where they are under threat.
This gambit is all about superior development. Do NOT get yourself into pins and binds.

    • @aniruddhvasishta8334
      @aniruddhvasishta8334 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for these rules; I know you commented this nearly a year ago but in the middlegame, how are you supposed to know the right moment to break the tension in the center that's been building? Is that just a matter of experience?

The line where you take back the pawn with the queen is actually the best one, recommended by Diemer himself (i recommend looking up his games using this opening, amazing stuff). It's super aggressive and there are a ton of traps black can fall into easily in just like, 10 moves. I think if you're gonna play the blackmar-diemer you might as well go all in.
