- For today's tasting Wine-Searcher's Wine-Director, David Allen MW, has been fortunate enough to spend a day in Tuscany at the winery of the original Super-Tuscan wine - Sassicaia. Today he tastes a mature, yet still brooding wine, the 2015. This vintage currently has a Wine-Searcher aggregated critics score of 96/100. This is the third of four vintages for which he has recorded tasting videos
Sassicaia and the Tenuta San Guido estate are located in the Tuscan region of Maremma, the wine - originally simply labelled as a lowly vino da Tavola - now has its own single-estate DOC appellation (Bolgheri Sassicaia).
Sassicaia, was the original Super Tuscan wine, being made Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. It is known for its supple texture, elegance and perfume. Sassicaia ("stony field" in English) was created as an experimental wine in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (a cousin of the Antinoris), who dreamed of making a wine to rival great Bordeaux. On settling at his wife's estate, he experimented with several French varieties before focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, noting the similarity between the local gravelly terrain and that of Graves in Bordeaux.
Tenuta San Guido also makes Guidalberto and Le Difese, predominantly from fruit from other estate vineyards. These two wines are classified as IGT Toscana. Guidalberto is a Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot blend, and Le Difese Cabernet Sauvignon - Sangiovese, with a portion being aged in American oak.

Great vintage throughout Tuscany!🍷.
Something definitely born out in this wine!
Delighted that you are so enthused by this wine as I have a few bottles that I haven’t tried yet. Less happy that I have to wait 10 years to wait to them a go 😂😂
I don't think you have to wait 10 years, but I think you would benefit from so doing, it was a real contrast to the 2016 which was so much more developed.
@@winesearcher love your channel!
@@finiansweeney2066 Thank you - it is a labour of love!...
I have a bottle of this. Wondering the best year to crack open?
I certainly wouldn't be in any rush to open it. it is still quite tightly structured for a wine of its age, the 2016 was much more developed. This certainly has more to give. Following on from having tasted the 1998 I wonder if the answer is perhaps 2040!... I certainly wouldn't be opening it in the next 5 years if I could delay it. As there is only one bottle, I think I'd want to leave it at least 8-10 years.
I don't know how realistic these timescales are, if you felt you had to open it sooner I'm sure you'd enjoy it now, but the ethereal beauty of the 1998 makes me want to experience more and more old Sassicaia, so if it was me I'd try and leave it 5-10 years yet!
Lovely presentation. I have one 2015 left in my cellar. Must say, the audio on this clip makes me not want to come back......I would hope that the ambiance of being in Sassicaia's cellar was enchanting altho the echoing audio is a bit disconcerting.
Thank you for your comments, The audio certainly isn't perfect - The one thing I would say in the cellars defence is that it is so well insulated that you don't hear the heavy rain beating on the roof outside. We have had issues with low volume on videos and to try and counter that I was aiming to speak loudly and more clearly - so actually accentuating the echo. More recently I've found a way of boosting the volume of the recording so hopefully that should mitigate the issue somewhat for the future. Do enjoy your last 2015, certainly I don't think there is a rush to drink it.
