I found my spirit animal Surveyor.
The moment I knew we had a lot in common wasn't the fact that we wear toolboelts...it was the moment you said you wore one knee pad. That's where I knew we were brothers.
I mean, even today I got questioned on why I wore only one. That's how common it comes up.
Main differences in toolkit though, is I prefer rod buster wire snips. I usually swap between a 3 pound hammer and a claw depending on the task, so I'll have a full on pouch that should hold nails in that I just invert my hammer in. Fits just fine.
I'll also use the spider universal kit to put my paint wand on my toolbelt. Not wearing glloves isn't optiional in Canada, and nothing sucks more than fat fingering paint.
I do also really like to carry a speed square and a centrefinder (that I actually use for both marking bolts and for marking offsets on steel.
I really like that paint can holder though for the plumbbob. I also prefer to carry a 32 oz. bob.
I have the exact same phone holder, but I cut the lid off it. Instead my new nylon bag I keep on my right side fits the phone perfectly.
I do wear a full suspenion year round in my belt. In the winter, its clunky. In the summer, I just wear a safety shirt underneth. I'll keep my markers (usually paint markers) in the suspenders, and I got a fancy flagging pouch that I keep attached to the front side of the harness. Perfect access. My left bag gets used less, but that's where my field book goes, and maybe any fasteners I'd like to use that day. I've even been known to keep shaved down hubs in that bag.
Either way, I learned all that stuff from an old guy I worked with back in the early 2000's. I thought it was brilliant, and I just can't imagine surveying any other way.
Oh, and rail spikes are great in the summer here. Winter, almost need a hilti or a pinner on some jobs. Clear coat pays for itself in time and efficiency.

All the ‘old days’ surveyors as I was coming up were all hunched over, that heavy vest hanging its weight on your neck definitely catches up with you!
No wasted space , that's for sure! Very nice.
Many old school grade checkers always wore knee pads, as they were always kneeling to take shots w/their eye level & stick rule.
Nothing turns a great productive day into a less great day like setting your knee down on a nice pointy rock.

I use a roofers nail bag. I carry: Mark up paint, number punch, black and a white marker, tack nails and concrete nails separate. A mallet and a claw hammer as well as a tape an short pole for the mini prism.
The rest I leave in my vehicle unless I need it.
I really like the lath carrier for additional tools like a mallet and short rod, or anything else I think might come up in the day. This keeps my bags small and light, but minimal trips to the truck. If anything I might swap out a few basics after ending a task and before starting the next.

Have you tried putting the torpedo level in the slide pocket between the exterior pocket and spray can holder of the survey vest?
I really like the peanut prism/plumb bob bracket...where can these be purchased?
You can search for it online by brand and part number: SECO 6030-00, this is just for the C shaped bracket. Most SECO mini prisms come with this bracket as part of the entire kit. The mini prism unscrews from its standard housing and screws right into the C shape bracket. It's extremely useful!

We are construction surveyors out in Boston, MA. We usually carry a tote or handbag up into the buildings, while carrying a bunch of other stuff that more than often is unnecessary inside our vest. This setup is so efficient, I told my chief about it and we are probably going to try it out this winter.
What type of radio is that? Also great video!
I believe that’s the retevis rt22, they are on Amazon for cheap and they all talk to each other no matter how many you buy. Decent “cheap” setup with construction site ranges.

You work as a one man crew? I’m asking because I carried similar tools as a Rodman. Now an eye man it’s the total station tripo and data collector and a radio
My approach depends on the task and the equipment available, however, no matter what I’m doing I have my bags on. I keep them minimal so I can wear them all day (even behind the gun) but am ready to help, train or lead as necessary.

I’ve definitely come up through the field. I work for a GC as their Sr. Survey Manager in Arizona and technical trainer for Field Engineers across 3 states. I enjoy it because it puts me in the field on a regular basis. I would hate ever to EVER lose my edge in the field or stop visiting sites and lose the opportunity to learn from the challenging scenarios that arise every day.
What type of clippers did you originally carry before the kabar? I work in DC and as much as I'd like carrying a Rambo knife, they don't love that on federal property

Fisher Tools in Phoenix, AZ. I hear they are out of production so I’ll have to find a new favorite.
Appears to be a DeWalt DWHT36066S "Engineer's scale" tape measure. Noted for historical purposes 🙂

It’s cool but it would be easier to jus take a hub bag
I put these tools on as soon as I step out of the truck, they are with me on my site walks, when I check things out, when the super is describing the task needs. The hub bag is rarely loaded so early on and I prefer to be prepared as soon as I hit the site with everything but the lath and nails.
