I live an hour away from Richmond Virginia so I definitely would chose Myrtle beach any day.

Traffic is a big turnoff for me 🤪 there mostly the same tourist towns 😂
Traffic is a big turn off for sure! That is one nice thing about the beach! Once you are there you can just enjoy the beach!
We went to Gatlinburg one time, perhaps 20 years ago. The traffic was a huge turnoff. The drive for us is inconvenient to both places. For us though, it would be Myrtle Beach
It would be a decent drive for you all! And traffic is the worse!

These really are the exact same places - one is at the beach and one is in the mountains. But other than that, same thing. We would probably opt for Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge though. We lived minutes away from the beach for years in Virginia and still live within reasonable day trip driving distance of the ocean. A trip to the mountains definitely feels like more of a getaway to us these days. So we'll take a cabin in the mountains please... but we also love Myrtle Beach too so I am sure we will be back there some day as well. You force difficult decisions on us!
Honestly it really comes down to what kind of person are you! A beach person or mountain person. We were really shocked at how similar both places were!
This is an easy choice for me. Definitely Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. I prefer the mountains over the beach.

I hated Myrtle Beach.
Took me years to go to Gatlinburg. My first trip wasn't great it was the start of the fall colours weekend.
But the mountains were beautiful .
But after that trip. I chose less populated times. And the crowds were low. Not much traffic.
Last year, I went in December second week and started on a Monday. No crowds, no traffic. Was decked out for Christmas.. No waits getting into restaurants . Was fantastic. Went up in the mountains found snow.
You just have to know when to go. Never go anywhere for spring break.
Stay away from weekends
You make some good points! Our favorite time to go to Myrtle Beach is the fall time when the crowds are gone!
