From what I know IU was supposed to debut with a group but in the end the agency decided her voice is too unique and would overshadow other singers so they debuted her as a soloist
In fact, when IU held this GREAT concert in 2022, her left ear was still suffering from an open Eustachian tube disease, which made it harder for her to sing than before.
Please note that her left ear is not wearing a monitoring earphone.

You're right, it's waves at the end. If you can find the whole concert, the intermission videos kind of narrate the story behind My Sea. When she walks out towards the crowd at the end, the lighting effect that rolls over the crowd is suppose to represent her becoming the wave.
The live singing class of Korea's number 1 solo artist. She is truly the queen of kpop, an artist loved by all ages, classes... in Korea.
