It looks like les flipped the pot switch right when he turned it up which in most stations would have put him in audition and not on the air. Of course today we have two separate buttons for program and audition.
the transmitter is usually in a small building next to the tower..so if the bomb was small and only destroyed everything inside the building...no transmitter tower would still be there..
