Short Circuits - when electricity goes wrong

  • Do you know what a short circuit is? It’s essentially defined as an abnormal connection (a shortcut) between two parts of an electrical circuit and is one of the most important dangers of electricity.
    All short circuits can be dangerous and it is estimated that, in the United States alone, there are approximately 400 deaths each year because of electrical injuries and 30,000 serious injuries. In addition to the effects of electricity on the human body, there are over 24,000 electrical fires.
    But what are short circuits? Have they just exposed wiring or electrical failures?
    There are two types of short circuits: a normal one and a ground fault one. The first one occurs when a hot wire, a wire carrying electrical current, touches a neutral wire, which is the wire that completes the circuit by carrying the current back to the original power source.
    The second one occurs when the hot wire comes into contact with a grounded portion of the system. This one carries an even bigger chance of getting shocked than the first one and should be avoided at all costs.
    If you encounter a short circuit, one thing is for sure: you shouldn’t deal with it on your own. Let the experts handle it or you may just find yourself unpleasantly shocked!

    Why is this channel so underrated? I really enjoy all your videos, they are quite informative. Keep posting them. Thank you.

    That first clip is scary as hell. Maybe cause i just recently saw an electrician from my place getting shocked to dead on the electric pole, and nobody could save him because he had himself tied to the pole. It was just an awful and scary incident.

    It’s amazing that people spend this much energy putting together a video that is positively hideous when it comes to legitimate detail.

    Can you tell me how to calculate the fault current practically?

    • @leeroth5604
      @leeroth5604 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Divide the voltage by the resistance (in ohms) of the fault path... result is theoretical max amps. As wires and connections heat up, the resistance will go up too, it will not stay constant.
      Watts will always be volts TIMES current, so you can count on a serious short circuit causing lots of heat.
      Many years ago, in old US houses, the fuse box would permit FOOLS to insert a copper penny coin behind a blown screw-in fuse, thus eliminating any protection for that circuit. A serious short circuit or overload and you could burn down the house.

    1:28 “normal and ground fault” ??? Dear GOD! How do people actually make videos like this????

      I don't know very much about electricity, so that's why I'm watching this video. Could you please explain what's wrong with what they said.

    out of curiousity i plugged a small copperwire then in the other end of the wire i touched it by only one finger , still it shocked or almost paralyzed my arm a bit but i was able to let go by 2 seconds . that when i was 9 or 10 years old

    0:23 that's an ethernet cable... Yes, it might carry POE, but it's a bad example (they have really low power, and they usually negotiate if the device needs POE in order to activate)
