Beautiful Finland. I haven’t been there but I’ll try to visit soon. So many places here that I need to explore more. Thanks for sharing. Moi from Espoo!🤍
Finland is really beautiful. I have a query if u can help. I am visiting Helsinki next month end. I have only 1 day. Is it possible to see the northern lights if I start around 5 pm and be back the next day by 1 pm.
I'm cycling soon to Kilpisjärvi, and hope to see there many intersting. I would of course hike and explore the area by boat. And then eat at the restaurant.
Hey Varpu! I have just now found your channel. I am planning a trip to Finland in mid November (11-19) and would really like to do some winter activities such as snowmobile, dog sledding and hopefully get some christmas vibes. Do you think it is possible to do that in November? Would you recommend a specific place for those dates? I was thinking Rovaniemi, but I am afraid I won't get enough snow
Hei Martina! I have piled ALL my Lapland tips on my blog: herfinland.com Can recommend @wildaboutlapland if you want to go on an excursion. Hope you have amazing time in Finland!!
Yes this on the Reindeer Ranch owned by Arctic Land Adventure. They roam around freely on the ranch and the surrounding nature and city. I would recommend hiking boots with ankle support at least since the terrain is very rocky in some areas. Thank you for your questions 😊
Late September / early October is the best time for the colors of the autumn in Lapland. As the nature is very rural, there are not too many leafed trees growing up north above the Arctic Circle.
"Tsahkaljärvi" strikes me as an interesting word. I know "järvi" means lake, and it's obviously a compound word because the two parts of it don't agree in vowel harmony, but a word beginning with the letters "ts" violates all the rules of Finnish phonotactics that I know about. I tried looking for it on Finnish Wikipedia, and all I found was one mention in the article on Kilpisjärvi, where it was also called "Čáhkáljávri," and when I did an autotranslate into English, I got "Lake Táhkáljávri." I'm guessing it's a loanword from another language, but which? And what does it mean, if anything? Kudos on pronouncing it so well, though! Most English speakers couldn't pronounce a word-initial "ts" like that! I'd have thought it would've taken a native German or Russian speaker to get that pronunciation so accurate!
I think it is Saami also. Čáhkáljávri sounds very ancient finnish. Tsahkal means sahkali= aarteenhaltija and it is something like "treasure keeper" on mythology, so some sort of spirit? of water type a deal. Ts beginning is rare, i know 3, Tsaari = tsar, Tsunami and Tšekki = Czech Republic/ Czechia, so basically loan words.

So, the reindeer just roam about freely? Would one need extra hiking gear (shoes) for the Saana tunturi trail?

@@HerFinland Kiitos paljon
When did you visit this place? Is it late autumn? I don't see much color.

I should say that my guess as to the mystery language of origin for this word is probably one of the Sámi languages.

Yes you're exactly right that this lake's name originates from the Sámi language! :)
