I find this all so fascinating for some reason. My friend who works at a huge mill in PA tried to explain how it works, but it must be really something to see it all happening in person.
I ran a taper rolling mill, my furnace and the others around my area, plus the orange parts coming off the tail that I have to put into tubs... OMG. You can't imagine how hot it is. I guarantee you have never felt that way before. My friend from india didn't want that job. haha. I would soke my shirt underwater, put it on, and wear it around my machine and in about 15-ish minutes, it was completely dry. At break one time, I walked away and was walking through assembly section and I had goose bumps. I was freezing cold. I told my buddy that I am freezing. He pointed at their thermometer. it was 35*C there. I am glad that I don't do that any more. The pay can be great, lots of O.T. Actually almost whatever you wished but that is for sure shortening your life. My one boss was fired one day for stealing. That night he un alived himself by burning down his home with him and the 3 dogs inside. Sometimes when I worked I thought, this must be what it feels like to be in a house fire. You really think your face is going to burn. It would be so hot sometimes when I had to straighten parts near the furnace that it actually started getting quite. I guess the hot air rising so quickly would take the sound away with it. Very strange sensation. I think when you see someone burning, i don't think they can hear anything because of what I noticed close to that extreme heat. I saw a large moth one time flying around and when it came close to the furnace, that thing was lifted up almost as fast as you would throw a baseball.
I worked the roughing mill in Calvert Alabama. I want to back . I was there for 3 years. I commissioned R1 and R2 and was there for our very first slab. Bill Hosmer was the man. What an awesome manager and confident man. We all were fired over the years. Oh well... I want to go back...
Toured a mini mill. The plant mgr. said there were rare incidents when rebar went spaghetti. In one of those occurrences, the rouge rebar pierced the lung of a worker. The guy was OK as the red hot metal cauterized the wound.
When I worked in a steel mill I got to go to different parts of the mill and see this and it is amazing to watch and also hot and the bar mill had to be in a foreign country or OSHA would have a field day there

One thing the videos can never convey is the heat, smell and vibrations.
