I remember seeing a Pantera for the first time in the early 70's and saying to myself thats one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. I have to say 50+ years later that assessment still holds true. That's the very definition of a superior design, it never never gets old!

    • @Kulumuli
      @Kulumuli 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

I agree. It's a mean looking car but built for purpose. I love it more than any other supercar. The 'new' De Tomasa doesn't tick those same boxes. A De Tomaso should be raw, untamed and note a style icon which they tried and failed with the new one.

4:52: “In the 90s, a decade best forgotten about”.
Is that the same 90s that gave us the Honda NSX, Lotus Elise, McLaren F1, 968 Clubsport, Caterham R500, Clio Williams, Ferrari 355, F50, and Lotus Esprit V8? 😃😃 And on the track, the V10 era of F1?

I think I could pick a Pantera out from miles away just by the engine note. My father bought restored and sold three of them at various points. The last one he kept for something like 20 years, fortunately long enough for me to be able to drive it on track once. "Man-tera" is an apt nickname, but they're gorgeous and if you can keep them from rusting the mechanicals are either (relatively) cheap Ford V8 components or indestructible ZF stuff. Way ahead of their time in a way and I think still under appreciated.

This car, to this day (in my opinion), is the most badass car ever designed or conceived of. better than any concept I've seen, foreign exotic, or american muscle. Looks like a blend of italian exotic and american muscle when car companies cared about aesthetics. It's a badass car, it is not beautiful. Its badass, that sounds corny and cliche but its accurate. It is the car ideal in my opinion and I hope to see it surpassed one day.

Such a stunning looking car! It gained quite a lot of popularity back then thanks to that Cleveland V8, highly adaptable and tuneable for relatively small price. There were many examples in Europe and America but there's one that strikes me the most, Mitsunaga's Pantera in Japan, where it is already a legend. It became the first car to break the 300 Km/h mark in Japan, and during late 70s and early 80s, it was the fastest thing on the road, pushing 700 hp with a full rework of suspension, chassis and gearbox. Many of these custom build cars did not only search for top speeds on test tracks, but also open roads. The 70s were the early beginnings of street racing in Japan, and the Pantera was already there decimating everyone. Mitsunaga killed himself trying to get 320 Km/h racing down Tōmei Expressway in 1981.

I liked this edit .. the host is fun and knowledgeable , some great information was dropped in his narrative that I really enjoyed. The choice of Pantera to drive was epic too.. that model and trimpackage is a beauty. Did DeTomaso really land in Italy w/out funds? He had inheritance , or raised $ fresh? Inspiring at any rate. Wealth and ability is an attitude.

Elvis Presley had a Pantera. When it didn't want to start (again), he shot it. The car was up for auction a few years ago, with the bullet holes still in it.

I’m a long time fan of Elvis and don’t believe I ever heard this story. Thx! Just read George Klein’s take on the story. I thought the only thing Elvis shot at was the tv!

IIRC Car and Driver once compared the Pantera to living with a 'beautiful b***h' - everyone envied you, but no one knew what a difficult time you were having.

Awesome video. Thanks for explaining in depth one of my favorite, most memorable, most intriguing Matchbox cars from the best Christmas present ever. I think the box said 108 cars. I still regard the moment that I removed the wrapping as the high water mark of childhood Christmases. I didn't even ask for it, the folks just nailed it.

Such a refreshing video, never heard of the car, to me Pantera is a metal band.
Keep making these types of videos, was lovely to hear the story of this car and it's creator.

I went on a treasure hunt in northern France with Performance Car Magazine in about '93 and there was one of these in dark blue on it. Stunning car. Thanks for the reminder, so long since I have seen one of these !

Recently got my '72 Pre L Pantera back from 4 years of modification and restoration to make it more drivable. I still think it looks quite contemporary compared to modern day supercars, better actually. And I'm not as big a fan of the wide bodied, flared fendered, Countach winged GT5 cars though I'll admit they're more aggressive looking. Those later cars just don't have the svelte, sensuous body of the original Tom Tjaarda design. Now, with over 500hp on mine and a completely replaced, luxurious leather interior with C4 Corvette seats, and fuel injection, it's a much more enjoyable car, and I take it out every weekend, whereas before, I literally almost never drove it. Thrilling experience to drive even a relatively low speeds as you're so low to the ground it's like driving a missile powered go cart. And the noise! It's ferociously loud right behind your head. No need for a music system as you can't hear it anyways.

Always loved the Pantera, wanted one about 30 years ago and were between 30-40k back then (depending on condition), would've have been a wise buy I think :)

About 15-20 years ago, when mere mortals could still just about afford these, a guy nearby had one just like the one in the video, and used it regularly to commute to work. I wish I could have met him and shown my admiration for the time I saw him driving home in one of the heaviest snowstorms you could possibly imagine.

A point missed by this video was that, unlike the other Italian supercars, De Tomaso did not use some complicated hand-built exoticas made out of unobtanium as their engines, but went for series-produced Detroit irons instead. In fact, there's been a long tradition of European/British high-performance cars using American engines, so it's not something terribly unusual. But in De Tomaso's case, it lowered development and production costs, and can satisfy American industry criteria such as emission standards easily, and also made maintenance much easier and cheaper, especially for owners in the US. The same also applied to the Deaville and Longchamp, which became the Quattroporte and Kyalami respectively after De Tomaso acquired Maserati, with their running gears fitted in place of American ones.

I own a 1972 “Pre-L.” It is a joy to drive. Getting stares from others isn’t a hard thing to do. Others “highway stalk” my car going down the road just to see its low profile and hear its sweet sounding V-8.

A friend of mine has one of the best and most authentic GT40 replicas AND a Panera.
I had the pleasure of helping mount and modify the front spoiler and adding 70's massive fog lights.
Both cars are stunning but the Pantera is special.

I really love the Pantera I should have bought one 20 years ago when you could pick them up cheap. I was talked out of it due to problems with the frame. Got into Corvettes and I got 3 now so I’m good.
