Trains at: Stafford, WCML, 28/01/22, Part 1/2

- A superb morning session spent at Stafford on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Cross Country and freight from Freightliner, DB Cargo UK, Colas Rail, Network Rail and test runs by Greater Anglia and West Midlands Railway.
Stafford station is a fairly large station and I used as a junction station for traffic travelling all over the country. Services from this station serve Manchester, Liverpool, Crewe and stations to the South of England. There are two lines meeting at this station, the main branch of the West Coast Mainline that goes via the Trent Valley and the second section that takes the line through the heart of Birmingham which allows for greater connections from Birmingham New Street.
The station was opened by the Grand Junction Railway in 1837. This was the first station to be built on the site, however it soon became inadequate because of the amount of passengers and trains using the station which then meant that a second station was built in 1844 which was then superseded by another station in 1862. Eventually all three getting replaced by the current station in 1962 to follow the modernisation of the West Coast Mainline.

Hello Tornado! Thank you for your super vidoes and your unstinting efforts to bring the best to us watching on TH-cam. No fun too standing on Stafford Station this time of the year!! Remember it well from days trainspotting there in the 1960s. and the time the 'City of Lichfield' came in pouting steam and smoke, Alas, all gone now along with shed visits to Springs Branch, Ditton Jct., Patricroft, Edge Hill , Bankhall and Aintree..
On a positive note, your generation of train spotters' will have a more healthy environment to enjoy your pastime in. Stay safe! Big Dave.

Even though there is still some good variety on the railways this day and age I would have very much loved to have been spotting around this area throughout the 90s as there was just so much loco hauled traffic coming through the station.

Avanti trains are quite nicely cleaned. Compared to off white Thameslink dirt we get on the MML. Even EMR is dirty.
I think that's more down to the nature of the route than anything else, the problem with the Thameslink 700s is that a lot of the dirt is accumulated from the 'shoe' that collects power from the third rail. So all of the dirt is being kicked off that and than run along the length of the car where the shoe is.

Great video mate. Didn't see West Midlands Railway class 196 Civity unit on test but at least you catch the 730 and 390121 the COP26 livery looks amazing 👍
Thanks very much, I have seen a 196 when I have passed the Arriva Train Care depot at Crewe on numerous occasions but I am yet to see one on test. The COP26 livery on the 390 really does look fantastic

What to day, well Stafford is full of the unexpected as you have demonstrated to show very well. An truly epic way to start the year to get things on track. Those 730's looks...epic is one of many words to describe it. These units will be replacing the class 323's which will eventually end up working with Northern. A similar class to the 730's which London North Western Railway has also bought will be replacing the 350/2 units.

Excellent video there sir, complete with the usual slip ups! The 56 has to be the highlight of part 1 that's for sure! Shame about the Avanti West Coast 221 Super Voyagers not featuring here in this part but I'll have my fingers crossed for part 2!

Its interesting to think that the 350/4 despite its somewhat "classic" Desiro appearance is a serious performer on the North WCML
Having travelled a fair bit on the /1 and /2, they really aren't looked after by LNWR
Voyagers showing again that its excellent braking and acceleration means that despite how much people may moan about them - there's not much to touch their flexibility
I do find it slightly surprising that LNWR aren't really giving the 350/4s much care. Especially as they have a facility based at Northampton for the sole purpose of cleaning and maintaining the fleet. I will never understand why the voyagers get such a hard time from enthusiasts all over the country. Every time I have travelled on one I have never had any complaints what so ever, one of the many great things about them is that every seat has a charging point for phones on them (on the avanti west coast ones atleast) and I have always found them to be very comfortable for long journeys. I've done Birmingham to Exeter and Milton Keynes to Chester.
Thats a type 75 tamper they stop start as the hammers drop in. the type09 can tamp as it moves along.
Hey tornado992! I highly recommend you go at night because there are a lot of freights and a mail train sometimes! I always go at night with my dad.

Stafford is a good station to spot trains on the West Coast Main Line. Never been to Stafford in my life.
I would very much recommend coming here on a weekday as you're guaranteed to get a mixture of just about everything

Desiros in general are getting louder with age - some of the 375s on SET are very loud now
But they do still have much more to offer in terms of their life before they get replaced

If the 350 is a 350/4 then its ex transpennine as transpennine ran 350/4s only

I like to call 390121 the “Planetary pendo”
That does sound like a very good name for it
I do like the climate change livery on the Pendolino by the way! Snazzy is the right word that's for sure and I suppose it's a carbon neutral Pendolino but you could say the same with all Pendolinos!
Avanti have done a top job with the livery for that 390
Personally, I find that 730 to be absolutely hideous. The purple and orange os not a good colour combination, the front end was designed by a child, and the all black front manages to make it look even worse.
Certainly a strong opinion that's for sure, but I can see where you're coming from
Do NOT confuse Liverpool Lime Street with London Liverpool Street, I have had enough people do that and vice versa, and do not make jokes about it it is no laughing matter. The operators of the London station should change it’s name to avoid that confusion.
