Love your B Roll! The way you change the aperture without seeing your fingers, seeing the blades stop down - beautifully done. Great to discover a new lens too. Love the flare colour on these coatings.
Looks beautiful. Must see can i get my hands on one, even to try out. My widest lens is 24mm. I want something even wider without fisheye and was looking at around 20mm. This could be just that. Great review and video
Just stumbled on your very cool TH-cam channel recently VO and viewed the cleaning vintage zoom lens episode. Followed up today with some of your most informative lens reviews. Thank you for responding to my belated question so promptly. Not a Konica user myself but could be hovering ... Cheers Woody
Thank you for your nice comment Woody! I appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear that the you enjoy the videos. Konica made some amazing lenses back in the day, and they are definitely worth checking out. Personally, I am a huge fan of their optics! Cheers!
Hi ! ici to see you reviewed this Lens. I also haben to have it. I would like te add to your revient that it has an amaising close up capability, and à very personal "painterly" look on the pictures taken in short fous distance. An amaising Lens indeed ! Cheers !
Hi! Yes, the minimum focusing distance of only 20cm is great! I love lenses that can focus really close, which is another reason why I like this lens so much. And I agree that this Konica has a very unique look when you photograph subjects at close distances. Beautiful rendering for sure! Glad to hear that you also have and appreciate this amazing lens! Cheers!!
oooo so happy to see you make a video on one of my favorite vintage lenses! I bought the 4th version half on a whim and half because it was a decent price on auction (not super great but at $170 USD after shipping it wasn't as high as I have seen some go). I really like the black and white images this lens makes and while I have only peeked at the colors a few times, I have found them to be nice and soft. I should try more of them! This along with the 24 and 28 1.8 make up my "oh dear too many wides, can't choose" konica lineup haha. Wish I could afford the 21 2.8 but that one is a huge jump in price
So nice to hear that you also love this Konica lens!! Isn’t it just amazing?!! It’s fantastic for black and white or color. Super versatile! One of my all time favorites!! I also love the 24mm f2.8. And just like you I’m trying to find the 21mm f2.8 but no luck yet. Hopefully one day 😆 Konica lenses are such gems!
In the film days I used to photograph with Pentax; and for my K mount bodies I used to use the very compact SMC-M 20mm f4. Yes, it is 'younger' than this Konica, but so much smaller, with the same opening. Got great B&W and color shots with it.
I've had the Pentax M 20/4 for quite a long while and agree, it's a fantastic lens - I will say it does not perform at the same level as this Hexie here... The Pentax is definitely edge and corner soft until f/8 (on my copy at least), but personally I've always *liked* lenses that render this way (I love the old triplet designs on a lot of folders). The killer perk for the Pentax though is it's size. It's easily one of the smallest lenses I own, it's even smaller than the Hexanon 40/1.8.... which is what I love about it. It *always* finds it's way into the bag for a day out as the "just-in-case-i-need-wide" lens. Awesome little bugger. (So little I've been known to lose track of where it went!)
Nice vid! I have this lens, but tend to take my Vivitar 21mm f3.8 out when I'm in the mood for vintage wide angle. I am not much for pixel peeping so I have no idea which is 'better'. I think I'm worried I might ding the Konica - it really is a nice looking lens. I may have to do a comparison test just so I know.
Yeah it's a really beautiful lens. I was also trying to be very careful when I was using it. That big front element is so pretty! Haven't tried the Vivitar 21mm f3.8. Would love to test it at some point.
As usual excellent video! I have version 4, it's a fantastic lens that cost me 20$... I also have the Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f/1.7 which provides incredible skin tones. Both make my super Konica team.
Thank you so much!! Wow, $20!! That’s a crazy bargain for this amazing lens. The Konica 50mm f1.7 is also excellent. Enjoy your Konica team and happy shooting!
@@sahilbrar7330 I've bought mine from a dingy bookstore, the owner was an old man and he thought the lens was either a BBQ or a samovar chimney of some sort so I got it for $2.50.
New subscriber here! Just got this lens to match my 35-100 varifocal. Was wondering if know what the dameter of the focus ring is so I can order a follow focus ring that fits it. I have the 3rd version just like you. Thanks for the great video, hope to catch more content soon!
Thank you for subscribing! I’m not sure what the diameter of the focusing ring is. And I can’t measure it because the lens is not with me at the moment. But I’m sure you’ll find a follow focus ring that fits it. Enjoy it!
The one thing I don't like about shooting Nikon F-Mount is the inability to use other makes of lenses. There are so many great old lenses that I would love to try. Thanks for showing us this one as it renders beautifully!
Yeah unfortunately only comes in AR mount. Not sure if you know the SMC/ Super Takumar 20mm f4.5. That lens is in M42 mount. I personally haven’t tried it yet but it’s supposed to be quite excellent.
A bit disturbed about some frames like @ 3:33. So maybe it's not the lens but the post sharpening applied or some trick with 4K on a 1920 x 1200 display. Looks over-edgy here.
Thanks for this nice video. I've also seen your video on the Olympus OM 21mm F/3.5, and am intrigued with it as well as this Konica Hexanon 21mm F/4. I'm curious as to which one you think is "better". I know that's a subjective question, but I'm thinking in terms of color, contrast, bokeh, interesting flare, distortion, and just overall rendering. Just overall impressions. They both look pretty nice 🙂
Thank you! If I had to pick one of the 2 lenses, based on my subjective opinion, it will be the Konica. I love the colors, contrast and the sharpness from that lens. It is my favorite 21mm lens. Since I don’t really shoot architecture or interiors, its distortion doesn’t really bother me. It is bigger and heavier than the Zuiko, and it’s also a tad bit slower, but for me that is not an issue.
@@VintageOptiks Thanks. So is the Olympus not quite as good for color, contrast, and sharpness, or is it just different somehow? Yeah, the Konica is 12 ounces and the Olympus is 6.5 ounces. I sure do like both, so its going to be interesting to choose. Maybe just get the Olympus 24mm F/2.8 and Konica 21mm🙂
Oh the Olympus is also a fantastic lens, but there is something about the rendering of the Konica that is more old school. There is a certain warmth and a vintage character. It’s hard to describe. The images from the Olympus are a bit more modern and more normal looking.
Yeah it was crazy expensive back then. I looked up what that would cost today if adjusted for inflation and it comes to $2086!! By the way, not too long ago someone wrote to me here on TH-cam and told me that you recommended my channel to them. Thank you for doing that! I really appreciate it!
@@VintageOptiks I had thought about putting it into an inflation calculator but I hadn't got round to it - that's an amazing amount of money!!! Your videos are brilliant and well worth recommending to people, keep up the good work.
Hmm, that is a challenging question, because my favorite 50-ish mm lens that is affordable, is sharp wide open and has buttery smooth bokeh is definitely radioactive (the Auto Sears/ Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4). But I do have some recommendations. The lens that fits almost all of your requirements is the SMC Pentax 50mm f1.2! The bokeh is as smooth as butter and it's one of the sharpest f1.2 lenses out there. It's also not radioactive as far as I know. But it is pricey and not budget. If you want something much cheaper, check out the Minolta MC Rokkor PF 55mm f1.7. Amazing lens that is sharp wide open and has very pleasing bokeh. And if you want a lens that is super sharp wide open, then my favorite is the Minolta MD Rokkor-X 50mm f2. Crazy sharp wide open at f2 and it's dirt cheap! I personally love it's bokeh, but of course it's not going to be as smooth as a fast lens. I've reviewed the SMC Pentax 50mm f1.2 and the Minolta MD 50mm f2 here on the channel. You can check out the videos to see if these lenses might be what you are looking for. Review of the Minolta MC Rokkor PF 55mm f1.7 is in the works, but it will be awhile before it's ready. The issue is that if you want a lens with a super smooth bokeh, you need a fast lens and fast lenses are never "budget". And also most fast lenses are never "super sharp" wide open and several of the really good ones are radioactive. Also, "bokeh" is a very personal thing, and often times people don't agree on what looks nice or not. I would encourage you to try out some of the cheaper budget options and see what fits your style and look that you are going for. A lot of f1.7 or f1.8 lenses can be found very cheaply. Anyway, I hope you can find a lens that you like. Cheers!

They both have issues with distortion which is common in vintage ultra wide-angle lenses. The Zuiko is smaller and lighter and has more advanced coatings (at least the MC version which I reviewed). The one main advantage of the Konica is its lack of lateral chromatic aberrations!
The Konica 28mm f3.5 comes in a few versions and they are not all the same. There is a 7 element in 6 groups, 7 element in 7 groups and 5 element in 5 groups. I haven’t fully tested it yet so I can’t really say how it compares, but from the few shots I’ve taken with it I really like it. Full review will be released sometime in the future.
Hi, what focal length are you looking for? Unfortunately wide angle lenses are expensive. The only wide angle lenses that are still affordable are 28mm lenses. Is that wide enough for you or are you looking for something wider?
The mustache distortion is a mixture of pincushion and barrel distortions. That's why I showed all 3 types of distortion, so people can see the differences between them.
Not really. Hexanons, particularly the harder to find ones like the 21, have been creeping back up in price for years... and a few have always remained on the higher side.
