    So I've been using this telescope now for almost 3 months and I've got to say it is PHENOMENAL!! For such a tiny and cheap scope the images I've taken with it are some of my favourite ever! This video was finished about 5 weeks ago but I wanted to finish off with the Astronomy photographer of the year series first before posting it. Since I've made this video I've taken some even better images, that I will be sharing in another video soon! So stayed tuned for that and much more :)

    As someone who has an iOptron StarTracker Pro (who wants to upgrade to the Skywatcher GTi) I'm all over this scope. I was thinking about buying a guide scope first to start my "proper" DSO rig but these were unguided? Wow!
    Be very interested to see some attempts on the GTi Damon.

      Hello, I've tried it out on the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTi already and it works just fine. I'm yet to take any guided exposures with the Askar 71f, but with all of its dovetail slots it won't be a problem adding your guide scope. I'm just trying to figure out which camera to include with the mount and scope to make a decent video about a

      Hey, I have the Skywatcher GTi, and I have to say, that using it as a lightweight travel mount with a Rokinon 135mm for example is its sweet spot. I'm currently using a 420mm EvoStar72 with OAG on my GTi, and it's already at its limit. So if you plan on doing deep sky imaging more, I would actually recommend saving up some more for a proper mount like a ZWO am3 or something like the new Proxysky mounts.

    I got mine a few days ago, was very tired, but still couldn't help myself ... because it was clear for a few hours ... screwed my dslr behind it (with a Canon adapter ring you have to buy separately), put it on my Star Adventurerer GTi, pointed it at Comet C/2023 A3 bla bla bla, took 10 light frames of 15 seconds, 10 darks, stacked it ... AND BOY WAS I BLOWN AWAY 🤩🤩🤩! Then just took one 15 second picture of Andromeda and love it as well - then went straight to bed 🤣! Weather forecast says I have to be patient, but North America was exactly a target I was thinking of, Plejades sounds like a great idea - I think I will have a lot of fun with this new little baby 😅! Thx for the video and the breathtaking pictures!

  • @jrs77
    @jrs77 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The biggest limiting factor of taking images like these is really the sensor-size of the camera. The 183 or 585 are great sensors, but you can't fit M31, M45 or NGC7000 in it with a telescope that has more focal length than some 250mm. And the 2600, allthough being the quasi standard these days is just way too expensive for alot of hobby astronomers.
    So yeah, the Askar 71F is really nice, but when paired with a camera in it's budget range, it is limited to narrower targets like M81, M51, etc, etc and in that case a $600 Newtonian like the Quattro 150P is probably the better bang for the buck due to it's much bigger aperture.
    Just my 2p :)

    I am waiting for the 71F to become available at High Point Scientific. I am limited because of the SA GTI Mount I bought to start out with, so I decided to get the 71F. Due to the price, the availability of the 0.75x reducer and the compatibility/suitability with the ZWO ASI585MC Pro, it is a no brainer.

  • @VikramHarinath
    @VikramHarinath 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Wow. I've been looking at much more lightweight setup for unguided EAA than my current unguided EAA setup (HEQ5 Pro, C8 SCT with Celestron f/6.3 Reducer, ASI294MC Pro camera). Replacing my mount with the AM5/AM5N and the OTA with the ASKAR 71F looks like it would work well with my ASI294MC Pro camera - and be less of a burden on my back.

    • @DamonScotting
      @DamonScotting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's just the mount that's the real pain in the backside. I can handle the chunkiness of the C8 SCT but yeah you're right, older mounts are just too much of a pain. My AM5 weighs 5kg. I was having to stick 2x 5kg counterweights on my old eq mount just to put my telescope on. It's a no brainer really, it's just the cost that's the issue.
      I recently purchased a Juwei-17 mount. Supposedly a clone of the AM5's but at half the price. Very similar in price to the HEQ5 Pro actually... I'll make a video and let you know how I get on with it, in case you're looking for a cheaper alternative to the AM5.
      Best of luck, Vikram and clear skies :)

    I just got one and indeed is a great scope. The only issue I have is regarding the space between the scope and the dovetail mounting plate (the same issue mentioned in several reviews of the 71F). In my case after I mounted an electronic autofocuser (EAF) on the scope the dovetail plate cannot be moved backwards to balance the scope on the mount. The solution of course is to install a pair of raiser blocks but I am having a hard time them in the appropriate size. Do anyone have any suggestion to solve this issue?

  • @Triforian
    @Triforian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    From the point of view of buying your first scope, I think its a bit slow (or rather: narrow) at f/7 when paired with a beginner astro cam like the 183. I would want the reducer, pushing the price up to where you could get an 80 mm triplet + reducer flattener for the same price. With a larger sensor that's less of a problem like when combining it with a used DSLR. For that it's amazing value for sure.

    • @DamonScotting

      Yeah it's a bit of a conundrum. Such is the hobby of astrophotography. It feels like everything needs another accessory to really make it pop. I'm managing just fine with this scope at F/6.9 but I have been eyeing up it's recently released reducer.

      No matter how good your ingredients are…. It’s all nasty when made by someone who can’t cook. This applies to scopes, cameras and processing. Processing is a whole new skill to learn and most people don’t want to spend the $ to get the best processing tools.

      Even freeware like GraXpert improves my images by like 200% with just 3 click. You're right, it's so hard to determine the quality of the equipment due to edits. But with that being said, it helps give some sort of idea s to what images you could expect to produce with the telescope. I'd argue astrophotography is very 40/60 when it comes to importance of images captured vs importance of editing. The tools offered by Russ croman for example almost feel like cheat codes! Hello James, I popped the images into GraXpert first and sorted out the gradient and reduced the noise. Then I applied BlurX with fairly aggressive values I believe, before using starxterminator and editing each layer individual in order to make the colours pop and the nebula sharp but the stars still soft.
      No filters used at all.
      Most of my image data was captured between 1am-5am. Not sure if that will mean much but my images always look a lot better once the majority of streetlights here in the UK shut off after midnight! 😅

    every mount should be able to do so... but is it? I'd say you have to make another video with a cheap mount to be sure :D

    Very nice but it's a bit misleading though to talk about the images it captures "for $599"? At the very least you'd need a camera, mount and drive which would probably triple or quadruple that price.

    I am a keen amateur photographer looking to get into astrophotography as a side hobby. This looks an awesome bit of kit for the price....but
    the excellent telescope would only be the first part of the cost for me. When you consider the added costs of the motorised equatorial mount, the tripod, the counterweight, the camera and the go-to unit then this will considerably hike up the final cost of getting this telescope...and probably well outside my budget........The Dwarf 3 and the ST50 are complete packages and so therefore a one off cost. It would be good to see a comarison between these 3 scopes to see if one of the other two may well be somewhere in the same ball park for results...and wiill definitely be more affordable
    Thanks for reviewing this great little telescope

      You're right, it's one hell of a leap going from the dwarf 3 to an actual astrophotography rig. The cost is such a significant barrier for many hobbyists.
      I think the biggest question most people have is "Is it worth it?".
      When it comes to how simple the Dwarf 3 and Seestar are, I would say no, it's not.
      But in the long run, when hoping to capture spectacular images, it is necessary. There's a steep learning curve but it's certainly worth it.
      I'll look into making a comparison video between a budget setup featuring the Askar 71f, a mount & camera v.s a smart telescope setup like the Dwarf 3.
      Thanks for the comment :)

    No! I've spent too much money in the past few weeks on a camera and eyepiece kit and stuff.

    500$ telescope, but let's ignore the 7000$ setup for the telescope. Seestar s50 is a 500$ telescope that everyone can afford and use right out of the box.

    "one of the things I want to mention REAL QUICK!!!!"???
    Why?
    It's bad enough that everybody is SUPER EXCITED about everything these days but appending a sentence with REAL QUICK for no reason is having both feet down the rabbit hole.
    Apart from that, good video.

      Thanks mate.
      You should see the engagement rates on videos nowadays! The attention span of viewers is shorter than ever. You've got to say your piece as quickly and efficiently as possible and be grateful for those that stick around to hear the full message. It's not great but that's the way it is nowadays.

      Ah my bad, the video wasn't even shot in 60fps except for one clip. That's the first one I imported into premiere pro and I guess it's based the video sequence on that.
      Cheers for pointing it out :)
