  • We have begun building the underbody storage compartment for our skoolie! This is quite the project because the Skoolie storage bay is going to be situated in a way that it will be a pass-through style.
    By the time we finish framing out the floor of the under bay storage, we'll have approximately 83 square feet. The height of our Skoolie garage varies with the majority of the area being 26" high. The only parts that are low are the areas just below the chassis beams.

      Shay McQuaid dude! We researched the heck out of underbody & observed how motor coaches construct theirs along with the way the original Thomas manufacturer build theirs. So we’re just modeling what they do with a little configuration for our particular garage floor plan. It’s all boxes & triangles! When put in place, they become a strong system!

    Now we are talking!!! Get your butts under that bus and get dirty hahah! This was such a great video, the thought that went through everything and figuring out the perfect plan for your storage! And those tanks are pretty awesome too!! I hate those foam brushes, they just fold like a paper and don't hold up very long either. BUT painting those by hand instead and turned out great! And the bolt system you are using will make it so sturdy under there! So much room for activities! You should come up with a fun project for the doors you cut off!

    • @BEAdventurePartners
      @BEAdventurePartners  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My gosh, @MEREDITH and PACO, this is a BIG thinking project. As you know... Figuring out how things will align and come together on top of measurements, and then making sure it is can withstand bumping down the road... YIKES! Those foam brushes are crap. I got a pack of them to brush clear epoxy over our toilet... Which we haven't done yet... But that's what I read in the instructions... So I anyways, I had the crap brushes, and figured I would use one. Which turned into 4, cuz they kept breaking, and folding in half. Then I thought shoot this is so wasteful, I am just gonna use one of my good brushes! Not sure if you have had trouble with the rattle cans being so drippy... But we have, so brushing it on seemed like a good plan of action. We do have a couple ideas for the doors. Not 1000000% sold yet. I want to pull in some other colours. YiPppPpppYYYYYy! Anyways, big love to you both! We so appreciate you, and think its so cool to see you guys rockin' it over there too! So wish we could do this in the same city! How cool would that be?!

      That’s a great idea! A few cuts too late though! However, the way we have the doors planned, we will have a frame the compartment doors will sit in. So with a shim on the bottom edge, it’ll be spaced perfectly! Thanks for watching! -B+E

    Looks great guys should be plenty strong nice amount of room to move around to Brian can I make a suggestion the cross beam you put in you put the bolts up through the bottom just for piece of mind many miles down the road with potholes vibration etc. Maybe reverse those bolts and go down through the top in case they might loosen up and not fall out.
    If I were doing your design I would at least put a tack weld on each bolt for a extra measure other than that you guys are doing a great job on her and it's going to look super.

    • @BEAdventurePartners
      @BEAdventurePartners  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there @Brian Davis! Those are some awesome tips! We're thinking of using the red thread locker on all the bolts. The reason I put the bolts with the nut side up in the corners was to reduce snag possibilities. Not sure we want to weld up any bolts because we want to be able to take this apart if we need to in the future without having to use an angle grinder... However... I do see the benefit for flipping those corner bolts around, so even if we lose a nut, the bolt will still be in place. Any other ideas to make it stronger without having to weld? As you see there is still more to be done (we plan on doing multiple cross bracing on the bulkhead ends, threaded rod throughout the center up through the cross members above along with hat channel between the sheet metal skins! But all that will be in a few other vids to come)
      Thanks for watching & for the insight!

    • @shaymcquaid
      @shaymcquaid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can weld too, but, I think mechanical fasteners would make me worry less. I can SEE when I make good holes. I can SEE my bolt clamp up properly. Welding would ofc work, but with my limited skill,nuts and bolts win.
      I don't want an invisible poor weld to cause me to run over all my crap with a 30k pound bus. lol

    • @BEAdventurePartners
      @BEAdventurePartners  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey hey Mr. Ramirez! What a great observation & we really like Shay’s response!
      One thing we want to add on to what Shay said is that while under the bus, before building the storage framework, we noticed that the entire body is attached to the chassis with mechanical hangers & clamps. So we talked with some engineers regarding the reason buses are built like this. Even though the bus feels solid, it is actually flexible. Using mechanical fasteners allows the body to flex on the chassis as the bus is bouncing down the road.
      So it makes sense that some parts are mechanical & some are welded. We want the underbody to flow with the movement of the bus. Using bolts will afford some flex at the joints.
      The reason why we welded the angle iron together in some places is because that’s where floor pieces are going to be bolted to the crossmembers and we needed those intermediary pieces of angle iron to stay together as one piece.
      One thing that we did not do in this video which we will do in the near future is loosen the few nuts that we’ve already attached and add thread locker to those threads. Even though were using lockwashers that’ll give the nuts more of a chance to not loosen as well.
      In some future videos we had planned will be showing how we construct cross bracing as well. There’s too much in this project to show in one film! LOL! And in the near future we will definitely be adding all the very specific details to our eCourse Get Your Skoolie On.
      Let us know if that makes any sense & if we’re missing!
      Thanks so much for watching and for such a thoughtful comment!

    Great work guys. yep, that's what I want to use is the big plastic barrels. I really worry about Meredith And Paco They didn't use the kind of heavy metal to make there under storage like your using, theirs seems flimsy to me.

    • @BEAdventurePartners
      @BEAdventurePartners  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey @Pamela Chadwell! Yes, those barrels are super thick walled! Pushing on their sides, I (Brian) can hardly get them to flex 💪! I think they will be perfect for gray water (best of all... they were free!) We have a bigger freshwater tank on order.
      As for construction of the underbody... we tend to over engineer things because we’re not sure how much weight the storage floor itself will be supporting. Meredith & Paco did an excellent job building their underbody storage! The slotted angle they used is indeed quite strong especially in the box shape they built it in!
      We have more to do on this. In future vids you’ll see how we will use cross bracing to stand up against this dynamic load environment. It’s essentially building the structure to withstand earth quake forces while we’re cruising down the road!
      Thanks for watching!

    I wonder how effective it could be to take part of the cargo area/basement, and convert it into a small "bedroom" for a child, with a twin sized bed running laterally across the centerline and standing headroom/access to the main part of the bus from under one of the cabinets? Your kid wants his own "room", they just pop open a door in a faux "cabinet" and climb down a small ladder into their own little space with a bunk in the sailboat-quarter-berth style, a wardrobe, maybe a small desk and chair? As I imagine it, it seems a viable way to live in a skoolie with a kid or two and still provide them with that sense of automaty that comes with having your own room...

    • @BEAdventurePartners
      @BEAdventurePartners  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL @Mr. Ed - We don't see why not! Maybe add a couple windows down there so they don't feel like they are in a cage. Shoot we have seen people putting their kids under their bed and having their bed a bit higher up. It would be a similar amount of space... Small kids would likely enjoy having a little den of their own. My only concern would be keeping it warm. It's cold down there with all the metal... So cladding it with wood might be a good idea.
