    Dinner was an absolute bargain on that train, considering Amtrak is currently charging $6.50 for a beer, and most long-distance trains in the Eastern U. S. have not had full meal service restored yet. From what I have seen from trip reports like this, PKP does a really great passenger service job, especially for a length of trip that in most Western European countries would only rate a snack bar or just vending machines.

      And we here in Poland tend to say WARS is overpriced. There is also a saying here that in €/£/$ countries the the number on the price remains the same, it is just in a different currency (which automatically makes it 4-5 times more expensive)

      @@bartoszkrawczyk3946 I understand. I've been to Poland to "do" the Wolsztyn Experience running steam-powered passenger trains, in late 2008. I enjoyed the hospitality of the people and found visiting Poznan briefly around the train station to be very interesting. The food in the country was very good, and generally very reasonably priced.

    Nice trip and report.
    About coach lights going out in border. Yes, Poland and Germany are using different catenary voltage (3kVDC and 15kV 16,7Hz AC). But power supply of lights, air conditioning and sockets should be covered by coach battery and DC-AC inverter. Similar changes of catenary voltage (between 3kVDC and 25kVAC) are happen in my native country - Slovakia - close to city of Púchov. For passenger voltage change is detectable in some cases by AC noise only (turned off for a while and turn on back). So it means to be coach battery issue.
    Next possiblity is locomotive issue, it is necessary to stop the train and disconnect loomotive from catenary to change power supply voltage (in Slovakia, voltage change on multisystem trains is possible during riding only)

    • @KUBUTECH911
      @KUBUTECH911 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In Poland coaches are powered by 400V power lines from the locomotive and indeed most of the vital devices for the coach are powered from the batteries, but not air conditioning and in many case main lights. As you can see the onyl lights which are lit on are the ambient blue LED stripes. ;)

    • @psoras
      @psoras 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The train stops not only to change voltages (the Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives are perfectly capable of switching the voltage system on the run), but also, and mostly, to switch between the safety systems (PKP's SHP and German LZB).

    • @EpicThe112
      @EpicThe112 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@psoras LZB isn't used on Majority of the conventional lines in Germany its PZB if you're inside the EU44 ÖBB1216 family from left to right you have PZB Befehl 40 circle Frei Middle Wascham Right side. Learnt those from Train Sim World. The only way for the EU44 to use Pzb Befehl 40 if Frankfurt Am Oder Hbf has a Reduced Signal New board. Hello from Poland! Very cool to hear you enjoyed traveling here.
    It's sad to read that compartments go extinct in different countries. I love them. I often travel between Cracow and Wasraw and I made a lot of friends in them. Seeing 6 sits in 2nd class isn't something exceptional, but some are still 8 sitters.
    I like traveling in them because it is very easy to socialize. Even though sometimes someone can make your journey unbearable by eating fucking eggs and garlic inside, great expriences occur too. Once I was traveling entire 3 hours journey with 4 (1 year younger) girls having a silent party. Once I was traveling with a philosopher who wanted to offer me money for writing.

      When in Poland vist any place with name BAR MLECZNY (milk bar). Contrary to its name they serve all kinds of delicious Polish food (with or without meat) at value price. I recommend it very much so. The idea came up in the Communist era. In my opionion these cheap clean diners with delicious home like food were the best invention of the Polish Communist Party;) "Milk bars" are still popular today.

    Just a note, while indeed both 2nd and 1st class compartments have 6 seats on these trains, the 1st class offer somewhat more legroom as there are 9 compartments per car vs 11 in the second, while overall car lenght stays the same. Also, 1st class seats recline, 2nd class don't(in compartment ,cars that is). And finally you get a free appetizer in 1st class.

    • @DylansTravelReports
      @DylansTravelReports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting, although I definitely want a different seat config in 1st to make it worthwhile as it's more the number of people I have to share the compartment with that bothers me.

    • @kamilb.3643
      @kamilb.3643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DylansTravelReports Yeah, the first class at PKP barely differs from the 2nd class. Probably only in EIP (Pendolino) there is a visible difference. There are just few routes with open-spaced 1st class classic cars (in EMUs there is usually open-space only). You mostly pay for the slightly bigger room, seat recline and "better type" of co-passengers 🤣

    • @LookeyPL
      @LookeyPL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It actually used to differ some time ago - an "expected standard" was that 2nd class had 8 seats per compartment (in addition to having more compartments in a car like mentioned before) while 1st class had 6. 1st class usually also had EU sockets for powering your devices. It seems like PKP is moving out of this though, at least for higher tier providers like InterCity/EuroCity - good move tbh! 8-seat compartments are very crammed (it's less of 8 separate seats, more like 2 4-people sofas with little to no armrests). Cheaper PKP providers (ex. TLK) might still go for 8-seat 2nd class and 6-seat 1st class though, as they often use older non-modernized cars.

    Hi Dylan!
    As always, thanks for that video :D Great trip report :D
    I would like to mention that situation with "Husarz" locomotives in Poland is quite tought.
    EU44 (ES64U4-D) locomotives are certified for 160 km/h in Poland due to no ERTMS/ETCS devices (except one locomotive with Baseline 2 devices - that can be used in under ETCS L2 supervision but BL2 devices have less functionalities than Baseline 3.) and for now there are not any successful bids for equipping those locomotives with ETCS devices.
    Whats more, it is only possible to achieve 160 km/h where two drivers are in the cabin. If there would be one driver, the maximum operating speed would be limited to 130 km/h.
    Something about situtaion with coach lights from 14:30. That train crosses the Poland - Germany border over the Oder River (in Polish "rzeka Odra") and after that it continious the trip under 3 kV DC volatage supply system to the Frankfurt (Oder) station where in the middle of the station track there is a weave of catenary supply lines of two systems. In that point the driver has to drop down the DC pantographs, let the locomotive move by its momentum and after specific sign he has to rise the AC pantographs. In many cases it requires cutting off the power supply to the most demanding devices, such as air conditioning or lighting, which are powered using the 400V voltage from the locomotive. But that moment takes no more than approx 2 minutes.
    Have a great day, regards :D

    You translated Ostkreuz as „East Cross“ which is technically true but in this case one could translate it as “Eastern Junction” because that where you have the line from East to west which is crossing the ring line that also crosses Südkreuz Westkreuz and Nordkreuz respectively (last one being called Gesundbrunnen for historic reasons though) 😎
    Nice vid! Greetings from 🇩🇪

    Great video! This route is one of the routes I'd like to try someday. Otherwise, I think that the coach you traveled is the best on the whole train. Last year I took the PKP EuroCity Polonia to Vienna, but I took a 1st class compartment coach, the only difference between 1st and 2nd class is the space between the seats (1st class has 9 compartments, 2nd class has 11 compartments). So next time I'll take the same coach like you :-D

    The 2nd Class open saloon carriage belongs to the PKP IC 159A type and there is a long story why they have such great legroom. Overall generally accepted in long distance trains in Europe standards of comfort result in around 88 or 80 seats of 2nd Class of 26,4m open saloon carriage and 54 seats of 1st Class of 26,4m open saloon. 88 or 80 (often baggage racks are at ends so depending if they are present or not it's the 8 seat difference) 2nd in 2+2 configuration match with 11 big windows and 54 1st in 2+1 configuration match 9 big windows as legroom is bigger in 1st class. The manufacturer of earliest 26,4m carriages in Poland (HCP, now renamed FPS, Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych) first made 1st class 152A series per the 54 seats, 9 window specification. Later they made 2nd class 154A series which due to cost cutting had some significant flaws. Simply put to spend less money on R&D they used 9 window body same as in 152A but in the interior they installed 80 seats with typical 2nd class legroom. The result was that seats and windows weren't aligned, sitting on selected seats all you will see is the wall between windows, no outside view. When many years later the next generation of carriages was ordered by PKP Intercity, they said to the manufacturer that while 1st Class successor just needs a little more modern interior and that's it (the result is 158A class), in case of 2nd Class open saloon they must do something better than the botched attempt of 154A class. So the manufacturer still prefering to save money decided that instead of adjusting windows to existing seat layout, it will be more cost effective to go for opposite approach of adjusting seats to existing 9 window layout. The result is the 159A class seen on the video, a hybrid of huge 1st Class legroom with 2+2 layout typical of 2nd Class, with total number of seats being 72. So such very indirect design decisions resulted in what is considered the best 2nd Class open saloon carriage of PKP IC.

    Worth pointing out: Poznań Główny is the busiest station in the country with the largest number of platforms and due to numbering traditions (platform/track is fine, worse is numbering the platforms if the station building is in the middle) and complicated layout the most confusing in the country. Really easy to get lost or spend too much time walking around while your connection departs

    I really prefer the old style compartment coaches. They offer broader seats, usually more legroom, and a nicer atmosphere for long distance traveling. Unfortunately, they are a dying species due to economical reasons. In airline style configurated coaches they can cram onsiberably more people. Annother disadvantage of the modern air line style rows is that there are always seats with limited access to the window.

Nowadays the main reason to upgrade to 1st class is to avoid some more problematic types of people and there is usually less people in 1st class even if 2nd class is completely full. I choose 1st class when I need peace and quiet and 2nd class when I feel like getting to know people.

    Hello Dylan, when you got into the car I was reminded of the earlier ÖBB carriages (e.g. the Vienna-Oostende-Express), which were approved for express train speeds (160 km / h), were also comfortable in 2nd class (seats, legroom) and run quietly.
    Seams co-working of PKP and ÖBB brings back the "Austrian style" (e.g. comfort, service) to East Europe railways making a railway trip to real journey. - Greetings to all fans of journeys insteed trips, Heinz

    • @Grybovsky
      @Grybovsky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure about that specific route but we have a lot of projects currently under way and many planned to begin soon. The biggest one would be the construction of a new huge airport right in the heart of Poland planned for 2023-2030+. (Let's skip the part where we talk if it's necessary and smart to build it) With that there is a plan to create 10 main rail "spokes" to connect every region to the airport. They plan to create:
      670km of fast railway >250km/h
      740km of main tracks 200-250
      190km of connecting tracks around 160km/h.
      If you want to check it out you can search for CPK.

    Hey, thanks for another great video! From your previous videos it looks like you're from Scotland. I used to live in Edinburgh for 15 years. I loved the train journeys across the Firth of Forth on the way to Dundee or St. Andrews from Edinburgh. Especially in the morning when the partial mist was covering the Firth. Can I ask what was your most favourite train journey and why?

    I like the looks of the Siemens locomotives and this one is nice too; great shot btw. But what about the engine ? at 4:35 it looks more stylized than ours. The rear window is definitely the best view. Food looked good and price was fair; how was the Polish lager ? Ticket price was about half what the same trip would cost in Canada even with discounts available to some. If you ever do another trip in Poland I would go for a tour of the station at Skierniewice.

    I'm surprised that foreign tourist, especially from Western Europe, praises Polish railway. Polish passangers have worse opinion about it in general.
    But the fact is that our national operator PKP Intercity sends the best cars and locos on international routes.

    The joys of Polish train stations, the confusion... and the never ending refurbishments... plus the McDonald's advertisements everywhere (I swear the railways have to have a brand deal with them as they are the only fastfood chain in 90% main train stations). I love Polish trains, the stations, not so much ;)
