  • Hi
In this video you will learn how to prepare formaldehyde from oxidation of methanol using Aspen HYSYS. Formaldehyde can be used as formalin solution for various purposes. It can be used in preparation of fertilizers, paper and some resins. It is an organic compound of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Its molar mass is 30g/mole and its boiling point is -19°C, therefore in order to separate it from water we need partial reboiler in the distillation column. In this video first of all methanol is heated and combined with compressed air. After compression of stream this compressed stream passed through plug flow reactor where oxidation of methanol take place on particles of the reactor. Actually, we added some particle to PFR reactor to increase conversion of methanol to Formaldehyde. The bulk density, void fraction, length of reactor, diameter of reactor, particle sphericity and some other parameters of the reactors are given. After formation of formaldehyde, we will absorb and separate formaldehyde as a top product of absorber. The bottom product of the absorber will pass through a 10 stages distillation column to separate formaldehyde and water from each other. You can also recycle the top of the distillation column to a mixture to mix fresh methanol with recycle stream to check the effect of recycle on formaldehyde formation.
    Thanks

Is there a PDF of the formaldehyde production process from methanol?
