    Michael Jackson is just plain on his own level. Best natural dancer of all time, best performer, all around just a phenom. He has no genre, he has no specific base audience….he caught the attention of every single type of person world wide like no other artist has ever done. Musically and performance-wise he probably won’t ever be beat. Literally ever.

      At the end, it is all about repetitions, being a professional at your job (especially in the entertainment industry), mental attitude, beliving in yourself at all cost.
      Not just someday...or maybe if you feel like it, but every day, every month, every year... For a long time. Years.
      Applicable to a lot of professions, including something like a "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra". All about repetitions, skills, talent, and give it all, for years to come. Most people can't do it.
      And then... you have a Michael Jackson. Much respect.

      I totally believe it as I was at several Wembley shows and saw him receive his one of his Guinness awards in person too.
      Those are total figures over several concerts. He played to over 1 million people at Wembley over the three world tours (I was at the concert in Wembley when they announced it in the stadium), but that’s divided by approx 75,000 per show.
      It’s now a bigger stadium than it was when Michael toured as it’s been rebuilt in the last 20 years, and even now the maximum is 90,000. If you go to the official Wembley site they have the figures on there. And it says that Live Aid was about 75,000 in the same version of the stadium that Michael did his tours in, though I’m sure I saw a doc that that’s the ‘official’ figures but it was actually more because they squeezed more in than they should have.

But he is still loved and admired and lives on through his music and dance. On stage he was mesmerising he was truly a master. My mother was over 60 when I took her to his concert here in Australia and she loved every minute of him on stage. He was and is a joy to watch.

  • @joeyhewie97
    @joeyhewie97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    In the video they're using cords to hold them up for the lean. But later on Michael invented shoes that had a V shaped cut in the heel. So when on stage performing Smooth Criminal, a peg could come from the bottom of the stage. Then he and the other dancers would slide the heels of their shoes to where the pegs were and that would lock their feet into place. Helping them lean forward. Thus the "Anti Gravity Lean".

    • @coolwhip891
      @coolwhip891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      According to the co choreographer on Smooth Criminal Vincent Patterson, he said they used the shoes in the video as well.

    • @joeyhewie97
      @joeyhewie97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@coolwhip891 That's wrong because the patent for the shoes invention wasn't until 1992. If that's the case he would've been doing the lean live during the performance of "Smooth Criminal" during the Bad tour. But he never did because the shoes weren't invented yet. And if he did do the lean during the Bad tour some of the dancers would lay on the ground as the support to hold the other dancers (and Michael) to do it. It wasn't until the Dangerous tour when the anti gravity lean shoes made its 1st appearance.

    Pretty much every video he released had some iconic moment and the lean is definitely it for this song. Thriller came out 2-3 years into the video age and it changed how the industry made videos due to its movie and storytelling aspect. MJ also broke the color barrier on MTV with the tracks from that album. Black or White had morphing tech most had never seen before and all the “Christian” groups got their parties in a twist about his crotch grabbing and beating a car with a bat. He was an incredible performer gone way too soon.

    This song and video IMO is the APEX of Michael Jackson. It's perfection throughout. The story, the dancing, the music, moves and just all of it and has been since I first saw it as a kid when it came. . .still the "Everest" of music videos. That's hard to pick 1 of his. . .as they really, all can but for me "Smooth Criminal" is so, perfectly different from anything else. . .just flawless. I never tire of watching the moves this guy does and the moves he does to appear in 'slow motion' are incredibly hard to do. To make them look that good and the amount of energy put out on lil' moves that look like nothing and feel like nothing, no effort put into them is just professional beyond! It's Michael, pure and simple!!! It's Michael! xoxo ;)

    FYI. Michael invented special shoes for the lean. He even had a patent for them. Small pegs would come up from the floor and the dancer would then slide the shoes which had a slit on the bottom, onto the pegs thus anchoring them to the floor. Even so, this move required a lot of skill so you leaned down enough but not so much that you fell forward. They even did this move in his live shows. It required something to distract the audience so the dancers could get into the right spot for the pegs. Michael was a performance genius.

    To answer your question about "the lean": yes, it was real (no visual effects involved). They accomplished this by using customized shoes which had a notch that they slid over cleverly-disguised hooks in the floor, which then locked the shoes in place. If you watch that part of the video again, you'll see that they all slide backward slightly after the lean so that they can continue dancing.

    This video including Blood on the Dance Floor is kind of highlighting the mafia life because “smooth criminal” it kind of makes sense, and Michael did grow up around a lot of gang violence when he was younger. He even featured real gang members in his Beat It video.

    Love Smooth Criminal! If you like this you should watch Moonwalker. This is a scene from that movie. It gives you a back story of the ending where the soldiers come in and the girl was kidnapped and why the kids were there in the movie. Watched the movie so much as a kid that the video tape was completely warped. 🤣

    I love how this whole video is a dance. And as far as the lean, Michael and the dancers were attached to ropes in the video but then he patented special kind of shoes that attached itself to something that came out of the floor and they were able to lean right there on stage. Very cool stuff! Michael is the KING ❤

    RE The lean theres a harness under the clothes, a steel rope is passed through the floor attached to said harness, around shoulder height. The rope is attached to gears, made taught. Its then possible to be pulled back up from the lean.

    You should watch the entire Moonwalker video. At the end the Smooth Criminal video will make more sense. He turns into a car and a transformer!!! Also regarding the lean MJ got a patent on a mechanism that they put in the floor that latches onto the heels of a specialized shoe. It helps with the lean but you have to have strong inner core to do it.
