  • Printed animated optimal illusions are really fun, but there aren't very many clear tutorials on how to create them using Adobe Illustrator. Here is a tutorial that may help you complete your own animated optical illusion. Enjoy!

what you did at 16:59 honestly blew my mind more than the illusion. Like I've been using digital apps for more than 3 years and I never knew you could just slide the eye buttons down to make them unseen.

Thanks for this! If you haven't figured it out already, when previewing the animation on screen, you can easily hide the colored edges around each shape by going to VIEW > HIDE EDGES. Now you can test the animation on screen far more accurately.

Thank you so much for taking the time to clearly explain everything, without speeding the video up! By the way, instead of manually duplicating each compound Lines layer and dragging it into the next layer, you can hold Alt/Option key + drag the compound layer directly into the next layer. It is especially helpful if you're animating more frames.

You could have just created a rectangle with width 6pt, instead of creating line and copying it six times. It's fast to compute as well.
Btw video could have been short. I had to skip almost 90% of it. Also moving line layers by 1pt would also work.

Thanks Rebecca. Wonder if you know if the effect can also be achieved as a disk so the the 2 layers are rotating over each other and an animation occurs in a circle such as a series of horses running around the circle.

My wife has been spending hours and hours trying to get the free software program called Gimp to achieve the same effect as you expertly demonstrate using Adobe. We do not have adobe because of the high cost so she found a similar program (but free) trying to achieve the same outcome. It’s been very frustrating for her as the software functions are naturally different. Is there any chance we can pay you to take our snowflake graphic and convert it. It would be a lifesaver for me.
