Here are the instructions for replacing the ribbon
    1. Open bonnet
    2. Remove rubber covers on window wipers. Expose nuts
    3. Using a set of grips or spanner undo bolts
    4. THE WINDOW WIPERS.
To remove the wipers, push down on the join and pull the wiper arm towards the engine bay and lift up. x2
    5. You will see around about 8 clips holding on the plastic trim that the wiper supports come through. Remove these clips
    6. Remove plastic trim, this just peels off.
    7. Now you have exposed the window wiper bars and heating elements.
Take a look on the driver side and you will see a cable hanging loose and a black tab hanging from under your window.
    8. Disconnect cable and cut open the opposite end to expose the cable inside. You will see small square of treated copper.
9 scrape off the silver to expose copper.
    10. Get some 2.5mm stranded cable around 10 inches is enough. strip 10mm of insulation away and using a solder iron tin the end fully. Heat shrink can be added to this cable.
    11. Tin with solder the exposed copper on the small square of copper.
    12. If you can clamp these 2 cables together while you solder then do so as it can be tricky. If not get someone to help you.

Thank you for your informative video. I had a similar fault with my 09 plate Focus. I fixed it as follows:
As a test, I replaced the failed fuse for the righthand side screen heater. Initially the heater worked until the windscreen wipers were turned on. The driver’s side screen heater failed immediately. A clue as to the cause of the fault.
Wipers and Scuttle Panel were removed.
I found that the copper foil ribbon was in the correct position and clipped in place. The wiper actuator arm would not be able to move the copper foil ribbon.
    I turned on the wipers.
I noticed that the wiper actuator arm was moving the cable harness.
After a lot of faffing with a torch and camera, I found that over a long period of time the action of the wiper actuator arm had abraded the insulation of the cable to a point where copper was visible. Each time the actuator arm reached its full extent it was shorting the cable to ground.
A design fault and poor layout of the cable harness during manufacture.
I wrapped a small piece of Gorilla Tape around the cable. (The tape is ideal of the job. The glue on this tape is very sticky and the tape itself has a very thick layer of plastic.)
There was a small tab welded to the side of the inner wing with a hole in it. Almost as if it had been intended to support the cable harness. With a couple of tie wraps I was able to pull the cable harness towards the inner wing and just far enough away from the furthest extent of the wiper actuator arm.
The wipers were tested to ensure the cable harness was no longer being moved.
    New fuse fitted.
Driver’s side screen heater now works when the wipers are turned on. :-)

My car has several if these lines appearing when defrosting. The warranty people can't see the problem as they check it on a mild day with no ice. Can i ask did you ever solve getting rid of the lines or was there any other information you can thunk of abiut this problem?

That big black bit you was on about on the windscreen, like the one you test drove, is for the auto lights and wipers! The bigger black one is for auto lights, wipers, active city stop and something else! This is for the titanium x model (like mine 2016 plate) mine has the big black box there

Seems like your windscreen is failing. Saw pictures of it on forums, and they concluded that it was cheap aftermarket windscreen fault. If it was wiring problem, half of your screen (or all of it) would not heat at all.

Don't have this problem (yet) but good to know thanks. I did get fogging up inside the car and it might be a sign if the leak in the rear lights. Check for damp on the rear floor of under the back seat when it's folded forwards. Basically one of both of the rear lights let water ingress behind the rear bumper and it collects on some sound proofing behind the rear bumper in a vent.
