This movie was the only film that brought me back to the cinemas this year, and I can't begin to say how absolutely phenomenal everything about this film was. The only downside I can think of was needing to go to the bathroom but refusing to leave. I absolutely say that this is a great film that all of us Catholics should go see, for all of the same morals that our faith and human nature share with the characters, it is a story that we can all appreciate.

I'm not a Christian, but after many years being alive I can not deny there is a ton of universality within it. Especially in this era of promiscuity, and lack of monogamy, many things this religion gets right.

FYI, the destruction in Tokyo in the movie wasn't from Atomic bombings but from conventional firebombings, which destroyed about half of Tokyo and, over all of Japan, killed as many or more people than the atomic bombs did. There is a scene in the documentary Fog of War that does a good job of summarizing how much of Japan was destroyed by conventional bombing before the atomic bombs were dropped here: th-cam.com/video/gekdt0QwFQw/w-d-xo.html

But I gotta say- it’s not just the American Godzilla films, where the human cast is mostly just there to be filler. Most of Toho’s Godzilla films are like that too. It’s why the giant monster genre has the reputation it does, and why this one stands out so much (aside from being a genuinely great film).

I'm one of those who much prefer a subtitled Japanese anime or film over English dubs. Twitter ruined many things, especially American dub voiceactors, not interested. The Japanese voice actors and actors emote so much better, i believe them in joy, pain, horror, sadness, cruelty etc.
Stick to Japanese dubs with English subtitles, and i also saw and adored Hayaō Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron, from Studio Ghibli. No questions, the 2 best films of this year are Japanese from Toho Studios and Studio Ghibli. IF one goes to see The Boy And The Heron, i recommend subtitled version. Also takez place during WW2 Japan.

Thank you for your review on this amazingly counter-cultural movie, Godzilla Minus One. I think that you explained the key points of this film positively and enthusiastically, while touching on what elements of the film need to be viewed with a critical eye.
Your analysis of the balance in this film was eye-opening. The movie accomplishes a positive moral message while maintaining the appeal of an engaging and emotionally touching story extremely well. I appreciate that you found this a crucial element of a good narrative. A film like this one, in showing the intimate parts of the human person and their experiences, such as Koichi and his PTSD, as well as incorporating a fast-paced and intelligently designed character of Godzilla proves that such a balance is possible in the movie industry. In terms of presenting a balanced review, I would suggest that you could widen your commentary to speak to non-Catholics as well. It wouldn’t surprise me if parents who are non-religious, but still desiring a healthy intake of media for their children, might stumble on your review. It could strengthen your review to discuss the themes in detail, especially how the positive nature of this film directly correlates to a Catholic worldview.
Your commentary is especially aware of the attitude that the general fan-base of this film would maintain. Godzilla movies, as you pointed out, are commonly a Hollywood money-grabber for action lovers. These films are focused on intense action scenes and are expressly intended to be about the monster. The audience for movies like these are people who aren’t necessarily looking for an emotive story in a movie because they simply aren’t made that way. Your review encourages those who would go see a monster action movie to lean into the deeper themes of the narrative, and prompts those who wouldn’t see a film such as this to give it a chance. Making the typical audience and their taste clear aids the appeal to expand your heart when watching this film and to hold the media you consume to a high standard.
My favorite thing about this film as well was its emphasis on the dignity of human life. The statement the film made was a fundamentally moral one, but also a cultural one. Your comment about Koichi’s role in the saving of Noriko and Akiko was incredibly attentive to a sense of his value surpassing a question of his duty. Human life cannot be used as a tool for some end, because ultimately, we belong to God and that is what gives our lives value. Koichi grows to understand that feeling guilty over living implies that he doesn’t deserve to live, and that he must accept that life is a good gift. I also appreciated your point that Koichi’s care for Noriko and Akiko heralds a well-ordered responsibility for others that we feel as humans because we know of the value of others. An addition to your statements about the dignity of human life, I found that the counter-cultural nature of this film was very noteworthy. Japan historically, through its use of kamikaze and emphasis on dying for your country being your greatest contribution to the homeland, shows that it is never too late to change your view on the dignity of life. It provides hope for our culture in America and the nature of how human dignity is depicted in Hollywood productions, confirming that we can reinforce positive and life-giving messages in the future.
This review is especially attentive to pursuing truth in this film. You rightly indicate the fact that the message is a profoundly truthful one. This includes the truth that life is inherently good, valuable, and a gift. The story shows the truth that we cannot control what happens to us, but we can choose to live well or destructively. It also clearly outlines the battle between good and evil without blurring the lines. Koichi is the hero of the story and Godzilla is the villain, juxtaposed against each other with the former being good by nature and the latter evil by nature. Koichi’s struggle to forgive himself for his cowardice the first time he encountered Godzilla stands as a repsentation of allowing himself to belong to Godzilla, hinting at the struggle the human person has against evil. Koichi eventually has to face Godzilla and accept that he must call evil by its name to cast it out from his life. This speaks to the immense truth of the human experience of the battle of good and evil.
Based on your analysis of the film, it is clear that you found it inspiring. I find it fascinating that movies can be categorized as uplifting when they promote a life-giving message. This film uses evil to serve the purpose of promoting a greater good; ultimately, that nothing can remove the value of life and that healing is necessary to live fully. A particularly moving line from the film that reinforces this is when Koichi is asked why he never told another character that he loved her and wanted to marry her after the war. He responds, “Because my war wasn’t over yet.” This line speaks to the great depth of woundedness that can come from war and the struggle of a condition such as PTSD. Koichi traverses the difficult but essential path to healing and this is especially inspirational for viewers.
This movie continues to be striking in that, as you mentioned, it accomplished a beautiful result with a minuscle budget of only $15 million. It is skillfully developed in its scenery and use of narrative. Contrary to the heavy CGI of Hollywood, this film used the natural beauty of Japan to accentuate its messages and feel. It also contrasted masterful shots of nature with the gritty reality of what Japan would have looked like post World War II. This provided an even deeper meaning to the opposition of good and evil in this film.
Finally, I found that this movie holds weight in that it is relevant to human experience. The viewer can see their own struggles easily lived out in the characters. Koichi’s struggle for self-acceptance, his battle to be courageous, and his journey to learning how to be intimate again resonates in every wounded heart. The message of hope in the midst of impossible odds also provides a powerful resolution in viewers to face those monsters in their lives which continue to haunt them. This addition to the film truly makes it a masterful piece of media.

A lot of my favorites are kdramas with good character development, emphasis on redemption, and good virtues like in My Mister, Mr Queen, The Crowned Clown, Hometown Cha Cha Cha and many more.
Korean films have good films thatvdeal with the human psyche and spirituality. A lot of films in Hollywood are shallow and lack soul. Many are horrible.

I do agree that a better title would have been "why Christians should watch Godzilla" but, this is a Catholic channel, so I figured I'd stick in my lane. So what I mean is, as Christians, everything we do in life, we want to do for the glory of God. At least that's the idea right. Because of this, we can draw inspiration from anywhere. Books, stories, movies, etc. Sometimes, you find one that has a lot of themes or is a good example of something that showcases Christian morals, and we believe that God is present in anything that is "good, beautiful, and true". It doesn't have to explicitly be a religious piece of media. This is a philosophy known as the three transcendentals that dates back to the Ancient Greek philosophers.
So in Godzilla, I don't know if you've seen it, I won't give spoilers in the comments, but I came out of this movie feeling that there were a lot of religious parallels and tie ins within it, and maybe not everyone would see that y'know, different people pull things out of movies, but I feel that a lot of Christians that also look for these sort of things in media would also have a really good time with seeing those things as well! If you're interested, I actually did a full video on the three transcendentals concept, I'll see if I can link it below! Some other movies like this include Quiet Place, TMNT Mutant Mayhem, and Lord of the Rings

@@StevenSiew2 The movie doesn't feature "Catholicism" as in there's to church in the movie or anything like that, but to value all human life is a moral that Catholics abide by, and this is a movie that showcases that very well. Therefore, I believe Catholics should go see this movie and would really enjoy it, that's what I mean

@@StevenSiew2Tbf it was Catholicism that gave the world the idea that all human life has value. That was not an idea found anywhere in the pagan world.

TDLR: The way Koichi cares for Noriko and the baby and the way the movie deals with the value of human life is why I think it is a great movie for Christians to see! Hope that clarifies!

This is complete anti Hollywood film. Full of goodness and traditional values that Hollywood or any American entertainment can not comprehend. Have not seen anything this good since Shin Godzilla. Fantastic movie.
