    Hey! Great delivery and vibe here on your channel! Just so happens that an old friend and colleague Robert Knox, was the chief tech at CP during that time and told me many stories about the Mutt sessions. Including the AMS gear that really shaped the sound of the drums on that record. And, of course, it holds up as one of the great rock records of all time. I really enjoy listening to your descriptions and breakdowns. Keep up that great work!

      Thanks for the kind words, and very cool!! I've heard stories of Mutt using a wall of AMS delays for time-aligning drumset mics, etc.

    Excellent and fun little video, again!
    👍
    BTW not just the AMS, or the less known BEL delay, a cheaper lifesaver in those early days of "sample replacing" (we called it "triggering") back then in the 80s was the humble Yamaha SPX 90 and 90II - it had a "Freeze" program, that would freeze a sound in its volatile little memory, which we could then trigger to replay. Magic. Iffy and often not so precise and requiring some trial & error poking around, but early magic.
    😉

    the sc gate idea along w/ the 910 idea is sick! also listing the studio & equipment used adds another dimension to the vids that (imo) separate em from other YT vids. killer!

    Surely there's a way to automated the snare hits to 'fail' with automation that would be fairly simple to replicate with other effects if not these.
    Good stuff, really enjoyed the video!

    Can you see if you can do the Bulls on Parade snare? I tried for ages, and couldn't get it. It's so unique, like papery and thin, but not at the same time. This sounds similar, like the bark from the snare rather than body.

  • @MisterGribbles
    @MisterGribbles วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Ive tried (and failed) so many times to get the Bottrill snare from the Tool albums, mainly the Lateralus album. Yes, i term it as the Bottrill snare. Theres this low end punch that comes like maybe like 40ms after his initial snare hit which i cant seem to replicate. I also hear a saturated click layered to the toms that disperse/whooshes into stereo verb into the 16ks or something. Dont get me wrong, Danny Carreys an amazing drummer with crazy kit setup but im pretty sure a lot of the uniqueness of his sound comes from Bottrills treatment. Be great if you can spill the beans on that lol.

    kinda different, but any chance you could breakdown some 2000's numetal high pitched snare sounds? (deftones, soad, limp bizkit etc) i love that sound and i feel like they are harder to achive then "modern metal" snares and also there are not to much content about it especially the mixing aspect. you already pretty close to god status but that video would tip it for me! hehe
    thanks for the quality content!

    • @JPHenryAudio
      @JPHenryAudio  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      they didnt get it to trigger on every 2nd hit, i just looped that section so you could hear the difference between those two. It's more random on the album just like the plugin response.

    Another great video. While we’re at it, you should do a deep dive into Ben grosse. To me, and this is a largely controversial take, the mix (but equal parts the recording) of disambiguation by underoath is one the most “wow” level productions because how it has so much going on but it’s so massive and tight but also mushy and smeared at the same time. It’s like a contradiction in a way. It’s crazy ambient but clear, it’s mushy and messy but tight, it’s massive and wobbly low end but controlled. It’s the mix version of a waiter in a restaurant carrying 20 different plates and walking without bumping into people where you’re looking at him wincing that he’s an inch or two away from dropping the whole thing

    the drum track of Back In Black that you are using is an AI isolated track. there are no versions of the original tracks on the internet without AI. you are not hearing mistriggering of the eventide, you are hearing what happens in AI isolations when it cannot understand what reverb is and/or what instrument it belongs to. The snare hits that fall in between the guitar stabs are the ones you are attributing to the triggering working, where the ones without as much reverb are falling on the guitar/bass stabs. Listen to an AI isolated drum track of "when the levee breaks". Before the instruments come in it sounds great, and then once they come in you hear a ton of fidelity lost in the drum isolation attempt along with a loss of reverb.
    I have done hundreds of AI isolations and notice it in all of them. I'm sure there are spots in the tracks that had mistriggering but this example is not one of them.

    • @JPHenryAudio
      @JPHenryAudio  20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@tanneryordan I understand your point about AI iso, but during the main riff of BiB, no snares hit at the same time as the guitar/bass stabs, so that’s kind of irrelevant here.
      The sound of the H910 output confirms the difference in sound between hits quite clearly.
