    I lived in his hometown when this happened. And what I believe was the story at that time, was that he left drunk in his car, after being out on the town on a Wednesday evening, and on Saturday, he was found in the snow up somewhere on the way to that cabin. That cabin is quite far from the road I believe, it's not like it's somewhere you go drunk after a party. Later I heard that he probably planned it. I heard this from the brother of a friend of his. Also the last record was called "Funeral", so... And hypothermia is not painful if you are drunk and on drugs and what not. He was probably out pretty fast. But anyway, regardless of rumors and speculations and what not from my end, I really, really miss him. He was a great loss for Sogndal, a great loss for his family, and a great loss for his fans and for music. This whole thing is just so sad, and I wonder why the best of us seem to leave early.

      Hello, and thanks for watching. I appreciate your comments. I made this video like 3 years ago, and I pretty much did it out of pure speculation since there is little to no information to be found. I had another person tell me there was booze involved as well. Thanks for some of the details, as I've always been curious. Knowing that, I have half a mind to take this video down, but I hope it at least pays tribute to his legacy.

      @@FutureRuinsYeah, very little information, so your questions are very reasonable. If he was really heading towards the cabin, why did they not say where he started from? It doesn't make any sense. We also heard at the time that the police had been searching for skidmarks or tyre marks along the fjord, to see if his car possibly had ended up there. That's also a far cry from mountain trip gone wrong.
      To be more exact, what I heard later on, was that it was planned down to the detail of walking in patterns in the snow for some kind of message. This is why they thought he had turned around. And if it was really planned to that degree, I think it's a big disservice to him to cover it up with some "he was caught in a blizzard" type story. I really don't like that when something like this happens. I believe in truth, no matter how painful. All we are left with now is speculation. I also know he did more than drinking. He says in a Norwegian laid back backstage interview that he uses drugs when creating music. And after this incident I also heard speculation about him possibly owing people money for drugs. And the drug "mafia" in Sogndal are thugs, they are not nice people and you would feel pretty hopeless when owing those people money. So yeah....more speculation, and more speculation, it's all I have too.

      Because often the greatest artists have the most troubled minds. Be it musicians, comedians, actors, painters,… most creative people suffer mentally and I can relate as a person with ADD.

    The algorithm suggested this video purely because I've listened to Windir a few days ago.

    Ave Valfar! Ave Windir!

    2 legends, 1 year.....
    RIP Valfar & Quorthon.....
    Strangest part of the whole hiking story in my opinion is, why did he went back though? It was way further to go back home then it was to the cabin..... Assuming he came from that town and he knew where he was.

      @FutureRuins  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah its really tragic. Another person in the commented speculated that he was drunk. Hard to say. Thanks for watching! \m/

      He knew very well where he was, he had walked to that cabin numerous times. Look for my other comment on here, there's more to this than what was told publicly.

    What a great video. One thing I would say is that living in that environment and alcohol would be a dangerous combination, but I don't like to believe that hypothesis.

    If you got to watch the Vreid live stream thing they did on YT, there's a montage part that shows Valfar and the other band members. They were all friends and family that played with him, and also grew up in the same area. No matter what the circumstances were, it's absolutely tragic. And he may have seen very pleasant weather going into that day. If those mountains around there are anything like the ones I like to hike in during the summer, they create their own weather patterns. Could be bluebird skies everywhere, but you'll be caught in an afternoon thunderstorm with hail up in the Talkeetna Mountain range. Absolutely wild. I do suspect that kind of situation here. The weather looked good (or *good enough*), and it quickly turned for the worse, and he got caught being unprepared. It happens if you hike a lot. A lot of folks have that "off day", the "I don't need this stuff" kind of days.
    ANYWAY, great video, I'm loving the channel. And continue to RIP Valfar.

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. Yeah I heard speculation from others on here that he might have been drunk so that would explain a lot of things. Still it was fun trying to retrace his steps and figure out what happened. Windir was such a great band and I'm so bummed we don't have Valfar anymore to see what he would have done. Cheers and thanks for watching!

    Good video guy! It was very interesting to see the likely paths followed by Valfar during that time! We couldn't bear to think how painful was the way he passed away. Have you checked Vreid?This is a band made up by former members of Windir!

    What I don´t understand is why he didn´t dig in, and waited for the storm to pass.. Everyone knows what to do, and he should´ve too.. That´s the big mystery.

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had wondered the same thing originally. Seems like he could've even stumbled upon some private property and asked for help or something. However many have been speculating in the comments here that there was alcohol/drugs involved so that could easily explain the bad decision making. I don't know for sure though. Thanks for watching!

    Very cool content, hiking and talking about black metal! Watch out for mountain lions, although you're just up there doing your thing peacefully so they won't fuck with you hopefully.
    For those who haven't, check out Windir if you like norwegian black metal, especially if you like delicious arpeggios. Some former members of Windir (after 'Valfar' died) went on to form other bands such as Vried and more recently Cor Scorpii. Give them support if you like Windir.

    I see you have what appears to be the MSR Evo Ascent snowshoes. I too have those. Love the shoes. HATE the strap system. Almost useless for me in very cold temperatures!

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I wish they would figure out a better way to strap them in. Though I will say they are much better than the even older models. I just bought my wife a pair and they haven't changed them. Hoping to use them this season but we've yet to get much snow here in Colorado which is strange and quite concerning.

    • @alaskan_bergwanderer
      @alaskan_bergwanderer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FutureRuins The newest MSR "Ascent" series shoes I've seen from friends (the Lightning and Explorer), they have VASTLY better strap systems. Like in and out of your shoes in seconds as opposed to minutes. The lightning has the "cargo net" looking toe area, with a singular strap that goes around the heel. The other ones was like a ski binding, slide your foot in and ratchet like two straps into place. Push a button to release them. Meanwhile I'm struggling with like 15 straps and a basic ass buckle system. LOL

    • @alaskan_bergwanderer
      @alaskan_bergwanderer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FutureRuins And that sucks about the snow. I know we already talked about this, but still.

    Yah freezing to death would definitely be one of the worse ways to die. You’d think he’d be better prepared and able to keep himself warm but eventually if your lost you’d probably get to tired to continue and maybe freeze or starve to death anyway.

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marty mentioned he heard that Valfar was coming from a bar and might have been drunk. That would definitely account for the bad decisions. If that's the case then he would have been coming from somewhere closer than I demonstrated here. Still Reppastolen is a good couple of miles from wherever he was coming from. Talk about extremely poor decision making if that's the real truth.

  • @HeavyMetallurgy
    @HeavyMetallurgy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Obviously I don’t know and it was years ago, but I heard he left a bar and decided to go to the cabin. Alcohol thins the blood and clouds judgement. This could have been a huge factor in his untimely and sad demise.

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I was hoping for some hearsay such as your comments as I can't find any information or speculation on what he was doing, whether coming from home or some other location. My map demo in this video is probably completely off from what actually happened, but its fun to speculate. If alcohol was involved, it would make sense as going out in this terrain in winter conditions isn't very smart without the preparation and equipment needed to be safe. Thanks for watching Marty!

    • @coldwhitespring5004
      @coldwhitespring5004 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's what I imagine we heard at the time when it happened too, I actually lived there at the time. But now I've read so many times that he was surprised by weather like it was some normal mountain trip, that I'm confused.

    It still doesn't make sense tho if he actually made it that far to the family cabin but somehow decided to turn back.

    • @FutureRuins
      @FutureRuins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I heard a rumor from someone else that alcohol was involved and he might have been coming from a local pub. I guess that kinda makes sense in making a bad decision but even worse going into those kind of conditions in that state of mind. I still have no idea and this was my blind attempt to guess at what happened. It will still have to remain a mystery to the general public unfortunately. Thanks for watching!

    I need to listen to Windir again at some point. I've never really gotten into them, not that I dislike anything I've heard I was just always neutral towards it.
    On another note I was in a particularly wild and untraveled part of the Olympic peninsula last September, you have to ford a river that's only passable for a few months to get to the trail so few people go and the trail hardly exists through a large portion of the hike. Anyway I was camping at the river and hiking in so after being out for a few hours I started on my way back and I crossed a part of the trail I had passed about 20 minutes before and there was a fresh mountain lion print in the mud. Stuff like that makes you remember to always be aware. Beautiful place, I need to go back sometime.
