I think the reason that nothing in Omikron really feels 'cool' has something to do with something called the 'MAYA principle', and how Omikron completely fucks it up. To oversimplify it, MAYA (meaning 'Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable') is a design principle which refers to the balance of familiarity and innovation within an idea. We as humans respond best to what we know, so the trick to creating something people respond well to is putting a new spin on what we know, or creating something new which in some way comparable to something we have already. In other words: making the surprising familiar, and the familiar surprising. E.g. each new incarnation of the passenger train has an element of the design that preceded it. So 1950s trains still looked a little like old steam engines, and so on. Omikron I feel goes too far in both directions. In other words: there is nothing familiar about its surprising elements, and there's nothing surprising about its familiar elements! The demons for example: their designs are such a mess of shapes and textures that there's nothing that the human subconscious can really respond to. Their 'surprising' is not familiar. Conversely, their motivations are just the generic 'enslave and torture humans' motivations that we've seen a thousand times. Their 'familiar' is not surprising. So ultimately you've got this noisy, messy world that simultaneously feels like nothing you can relate to, as well as feeling like everything you're already sick to death of! Good job David Cage!

I love how was barely an hour into this and they're already fucking done. " We're half way through the game" Said Matt, as I look at my screen, saying I'm an hour through a three and a half hour long video.
Especially in the real LP when they use the alternate intros. The one with the creature in the woods still creeps me out when I drive in the dark (which is everyday).
In the last episodes of the Omikron playthrough, the usual intro is basically gone and replaced with fucked-up/creepy videos, some of which are from the cursed tape from The Ring. One of them was someone driving through the woods at night and suddenly seeing a cryptid strolling on the side of the road.
Rewatching this remindes me of the glorious time this aired and title cards and titles got worse and worse the nearer they came to the end. This is the pinnacle of their channel.
Honestly the most horrifying part of all this is the fact that as bad as everything else Cage has done is, this being FAR WORSE on every level means that he's actually IMPROVED as a game designer.
That is such agood point. There is very little gameplay in his later titles. They're mostly just QTEs which are easy to implement than a full game. So really, he got better because he now makes things where he(read: HIS TEAM) fucks up less

I love the people saying you have to play through it a few times to get it 1. Why would you make people play through an hours-long game multiple times to UNDERSTAND your story? 2. That's obviously not as intended, because the main conceit of the story, that the demons are enacting their scheme in real time, NECESSITATES that you don't play it even twice because it loses all impact it intended to have.

That showcase of the people defending this game reminded me of this huge argument I got into with this one guy super late into the LP. I remember jokingly making a comment something along the lines of "remember: people defend this game", and by the end of the argument he finally said that he was defending it because I had apparently "challenged someone to defend it" or some BS, despite nothing about my wording indicating that I was issuing a challenge.
Matt's delivery of "Oh, no... OMIKRON!" at 1:51:15 has been burned, no, seared, into my psyche. Every time I hear/think/see a thumbnail in reference to Omikron or this LP, those words with Matt's delivery shimmer across my mind like what I imagine it feels like in Star Wars to have an old master force ghost speak to you. Fuck me was that a mess of a sentence. But you get my meaning.
Poor Matt at 1:58:25 he's just like a kid doing stuff to try and keep his parents from fighting. "Look, I jumped!" And is about as successful at stopping it. Apparently, if you somehow manage to survive the two battles against the demons, he'll be shot down and killed by a Mecha-guard as soon as he reaches the basement of the police station, because Cage had no idea how to introduce the concept of body switching organically.
I looked at the usernames, and not only are there only two people who were actually trying to defend the game, one of them wasn't even trying to argue that it held up and literally EVERY comment that went against them outnumbered their likes by a huge amount! Like, for example, one of them defended the game and got 17 likes, then someone else was like "The fuck is wrong with you, this is horrible!" and got 57 likes MUCH further down in the chain because this game just is THAT bad!
That or Deadly Premonition. Both games involve the Best Friends getting lost in an open world murder mystery, eating ridiculous sandwiches, bad shooting sections, farfetched side quests, broken programming, shitty driving, a terrible fight with a demonic final boss and yet... one is adorably bad but enjoyable and the other is insultingly bad on top of being agonizing. Where is the justice here? How is David Cage a recognized hero in his country and Swery has been cut short with each unique gem he brings to the market? I blame Omikron for ALL of this...
Listen, I'm not saying that the Deadly P playthrough wasn't great, it was amazing, (so is Swery) but I have to say that them fucking through this absolute disaster of the Cageoverse outclassed what the SBF usually bring to the table. Every moment of sadness and hatred displayed in the most amazing fashion possible. Little things are what really made it all come together: the slow degrading of the thumbnails, the title changing midway through the playthrough, the fact that all three of them had to come together to beat different sections of the game, the fucking plot hole at the end that was never explained, the fact that Liam quit immediately after it ended to signify the devastating effect that ze bad game has on the human soul: it all just blended together so well that I honestly think it's what cemented these guys in my usual line-up of stuff to watch. I've never laughed so hard at something that was meant to torture so many. To use a line by Pat: they just had to lose their way to victory.

That puzzle with the sham is one of the most repulsive puzzle solutions in gaming. And all because the idiot body snatcher would rather steal and discard bodies on a whim than just ask someone for a favor. That immediately makes him one of the most vile characters in video game history. The only other characters I can think of that have that kind of utter disregard for the lives around are villains written to be irredeemably evil.

It’s been a while since I came back to see a Super Best Friends playthrough since the break-up, mainly because it hurts to remember they were great friends. But I’m back, and I’m absolutely happy to see it again. :) I’ll always love them in my hearts.
Like they all said repeatedly in the video, David Cage can't pick a theme for his games and go along with it. It's gotta be a huge version of everything and nothing at the same time. The best other example I can think of besides Omikron is Indigo Prophecy, which shares a ridiculous amount of themes and story beats with this. It starts off as a police thriller, with your character investigating an unusual crime that seems to be supernatural in its nature. Then it jumps to some bullshit ancient prophecy that tells of an apocalyptic event that is going on right now and that only your character can stop as long as they have the McGuffin. Then, out of nowhere, it introduces a new technological thing that is also related to the apocalypse, but never came up before and never will again. And finally, it goes back to the initial prophecy for an unsatisfactory payoff that has nothing to do with anything else. There are only two out of the five David Cage games out there that actually stick to their initial premises and never stray away from them, which are Heavy Rain (in spite of the psychic link bullshit that didn't get used) and Detroit, incidently his two most critically acclaimed works.
The fact that people defend this kills me in the inside. Even re-watching I can't understand the plot. And I wouldn't be able to even get past the first part if I were a kid.
newLEGACY boy I think the most glaring issue with the plot, besides being given entirely through exposition, is that you only seem to be able to ask each npc precisely one thing before moving on in the conversation. It might be that you have to select responses from top to bottom to hear them all, rather than selecting the bottom one. There's no way I'll play this garbage to test that, though.
Rageaholic made this game out to be an unpolished gem with deep mechanical systems and intricate stroytelling that the average pleb wouldn't get until after several playthroughs, in particular the fighting system being better than tekken. Maybe people just like it.
TheGoodShank Okay, let me say this: Heavy Rain. I can see reasons why people might like it and defend it. It looks good and maybe people may enjoy the story/plot and the characters. This. Omikron. What can you defend this with? It just isn't good. It's confusing, clunky, and not enjoyable. I don't even need to play this to find that out. I'll get people defending games, but I won't get people defending THIS.
Because some people like games that push the boundaries, remember this came out soon after the original doom on consules, to the average gamer the clunkiness and confusing controls were part of the charm and because stories were just starting to become a big thing in games most thought the story was fantastic and fantastical, its the main reason why David bowie wanted on the project so bad, he was interested in the setting and lore. Having said that.... yeah it has aged incredibly poorly and most of the original charm seems to have been lost with time.

2. That's obviously not as intended, because the main conceit of the story, that the demons are enacting their scheme in real time, NECESSITATES that you don't play it even twice because it loses all impact it intended to have.

That showcase of the people defending this game reminded me of this huge argument I got into with this one guy super late into the LP. I remember jokingly making a comment something along the lines of "remember: people defend this game", and by the end of the argument he finally said that he was defending it because I had apparently "challenged someone to defend it" or some BS, despite nothing about my wording indicating that I was issuing a challenge.
Matt's delivery of "Oh, no... OMIKRON!" at 1:51:15 has been burned, no, seared, into my psyche.
Every time I hear/think/see a thumbnail in reference to Omikron or this LP, those words with Matt's delivery shimmer across my mind like what I imagine it feels like in Star Wars to have an old master force ghost speak to you.

I know it's pretty late, but Kayl never leaves the first area. Apparently, if you somehow manage to survive the two battles against the demons, he'll be shot down and killed by a Mecha-guard as soon as he reaches the basement of the police station, because Cage had no idea how to introduce the concept of body switching organically.

I looked at the usernames, and not only are there only two people who were actually trying to defend the game, one of them wasn't even trying to argue that it held up and literally EVERY comment that went against them outnumbered their likes by a huge amount! Like, for example, one of them defended the game and got 17 likes, then someone else was like "The fuck is wrong with you, this is horrible!" and got 57 likes MUCH further down in the chain because this game just is THAT bad!

That or Deadly Premonition. Both games involve the Best Friends getting lost in an open world murder mystery, eating ridiculous sandwiches, bad shooting sections, farfetched side quests, broken programming, shitty driving, a terrible fight with a demonic final boss and yet... one is adorably bad but enjoyable and the other is insultingly bad on top of being agonizing.
Where is the justice here? How is David Cage a recognized hero in his country and Swery has been cut short with each unique gem he brings to the market? I blame Omikron for ALL of this...

Listen, I'm not saying that the Deadly P playthrough wasn't great, it was amazing, (so is Swery) but I have to say that them fucking through this absolute disaster of the Cageoverse outclassed what the SBF usually bring to the table. Every moment of sadness and hatred displayed in the most amazing fashion possible. Little things are what really made it all come together: the slow degrading of the thumbnails, the title changing midway through the playthrough, the fact that all three of them had to come together to beat different sections of the game, the fucking plot hole at the end that was never explained, the fact that Liam quit immediately after it ended to signify the devastating effect that ze bad game has on the human soul: it all just blended together so well that I honestly think it's what cemented these guys in my usual line-up of stuff to watch. I've never laughed so hard at something that was meant to torture so many. To use a line by Pat: they just had to lose their way to victory.
I'll never forgive David Cage for breaking up the Best Friends.

That puzzle with the sham is one of the most repulsive puzzle solutions in gaming. And all because the idiot body snatcher would rather steal and discard bodies on a whim than just ask someone for a favor. That immediately makes him one of the most vile characters in video game history. The only other characters I can think of that have that kind of utter disregard for the lives around are villains written to be irredeemably evil.

Nothing Special.
Like they all said repeatedly in the video, David Cage can't pick a theme for his games and go along with it. It's gotta be a huge version of everything and nothing at the same time. The best other example I can think of besides Omikron is Indigo Prophecy, which shares a ridiculous amount of themes and story beats with this.
It starts off as a police thriller, with your character investigating an unusual crime that seems to be supernatural in its nature.
Then it jumps to some bullshit ancient prophecy that tells of an apocalyptic event that is going on right now and that only your character can stop as long as they have the McGuffin.
Then, out of nowhere, it introduces a new technological thing that is also related to the apocalypse, but never came up before and never will again.
And finally, it goes back to the initial prophecy for an unsatisfactory payoff that has nothing to do with anything else.
There are only two out of the five David Cage games out there that actually stick to their initial premises and never stray away from them, which are Heavy Rain (in spite of the psychic link bullshit that didn't get used) and Detroit, incidently his two most critically acclaimed works.
The fact that people defend this kills me in the inside.
Even re-watching I can't understand the plot. And I wouldn't be able to even get past the first part if I were a kid.

I think the most glaring issue with the plot, besides being given entirely through exposition, is that you only seem to be able to ask each npc precisely one thing before moving on in the conversation.
It might be that you have to select responses from top to bottom to hear them all, rather than selecting the bottom one. There's no way I'll play this garbage to test that, though.

Rageaholic made this game out to be an unpolished gem with deep mechanical systems and intricate stroytelling that the average pleb wouldn't get until after several playthroughs, in particular the fighting system being better than tekken. Maybe people just like it.

Because some people like games that push the boundaries, remember this came out soon after the original doom on consules, to the average gamer the clunkiness and confusing controls were part of the charm and because stories were just starting to become a big thing in games most thought the story was fantastic and fantastical, its the main reason why David bowie wanted on the project so bad, he was interested in the setting and lore. Having said that.... yeah it has aged incredibly poorly and most of the original charm seems to have been lost with time.
