Make the best avocado and citrus container soil. Just Do It!

  • In this video we make the best avocado and citrus mineral based container soil. Soil is the growing medium, not the nutrition source. Wood by products that are made and sold by the big box stores will, over time, continue to decompose (rot) and do the same to the root structure of these fragile plants that are in and around it. Root nutrition comes from the compost and fertilizer we add to the top of the soil layer (as in nature) that, as we water will work its way down into the root structure.
    Our basic growing medium consists of:
    1 part All Purpose Sand
    1 part Pumice
    1.5 parts Peat Moss
    1/2 part Perlite
    As you fill the bottom 1/3 of your container, water in the soil, again on the 2nd 1/3 of soil added and then add your fertilizer of choice and worm castings along with the sand layer we showed to the top 1/3 of the soil. Add mulch and watch it grow.

    Scott , thanks again for making such informative videos. Like you, I think top pot is the best soil I’ve used for potted avocado trees. Since I’m 3-4 hours north of laguna hills nursery I use 1 bag of top pot with a scoop of fill sand from my local sand / gravel supplier mixing them in my cement mixer. This gives me enough material to completely fill up a 15 gallon tall pot with the mix. I also have a large tub to rinse off all of the old wood chip mix off my avocado trees before repotting them in this mix. So far 100% successful doing this.

      Yes top pot is probably the best I’ve ever came across. We’re fortunate to have access to it. Have you thought about making a simple chart showing a measurement of how much of each ingredient to mix together in a batch for say a 15 gallon or 25 gallon size container ? For example 1 bag of top pot with one scoop of sand mixed together is the right amount for a 15 gallon tall pot .

  • @sern0nz
    @sern0nz ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello from New Zealand. Great video! I also use this recipe after watching Gary's videos of the ingredients that go into the top pot mix. I see you have about 60% permanent materials. I use about the same but less sand and more perlite just for the weight factor when trying to move pots around. Good tip about sand at the top. My citrus love this mix. The extra oxygen really helps to grow them healthier and faster.

    Thank you for this info. I tired another soil mix from a yotubers but my plants aren't thriving. Your mixture makes complete sense. I will be repotting my citrus with your ingredients. My question is do you put your fertilizer/worm castings on top of that top sand layer, which means you need to remove your top mulch layer first? Or do you add the fertilizer right on top of the mulch? Also what type of top mulch do you use?

    At the time of mixing, the sand is spread homogeneously throughout the potting mix, but you find that the sand in this potting mix separates and gradually moves down to the base of the pot over time? (sort of like how, at the bottom of every box of breakfast cereal, there is fine cereal dust that has separated from the large pieces). You used 1/2 part (half a cup) of perlite, but if I omit sand altogether from my own potting mix, could I use extra perlite to compensate? Personally, I feel that the coarser particles of aggregates (pumice and perlite) do a better job at aeration and drainage in a container/pot than finer grains like sand. But, the recipe you use works perfectly fine, judging by the fantastic results you are getting from it.

      @@TheElsinoreGardener I would have initially assumed that naturally acidic peat moss alone, and without added coir to 'dilute' the acidity, would be good for acidophiles like blueberries, but a bit too much on the acidic side for avocados and citrus, but in practice it works well for avocados and citrus, right? Do you find that the added sand separates out into a layer at the bottom of the container after repeated waterings, or does it remain evenly distributed through the peatmoss matrix? Cheers, Gary

      Soil needs to be mostly mineral based, add organic material and amendments to the top and let those filter down into the soil naturally as nature does it. All organic material breaks down and if you pack tree roots with only organic material that material will start to break down and break the roots down around them.

    • @TheElsinoreGardener
      @TheElsinoreGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer sand throughout the soil mixture. It settles around the roots without leaving air pockets and allows water to flow. Try your ideas and report back your findings.

    • @TheBrewingMiner
      @TheBrewingMiner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Elsinore Gardener Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve attempted to treat the root rot and only time will tell how this goes. So far, a thin layer of coconut coir has prevented the perlite from floating. However I only have a small container that fits on the windowsill and I lightly water the seedling.
      The potting mix I could make with what I had on hand was earthworm castings, perlite, and coconut coir, with only little amounts of the coir, and generous amounts of perlite.
