So while it's a disadvantage then, it's an advantage down the road because your getting hands on training from the best teachers in the class.

@@camiloiribarren1450 My Sensei was a student of Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine and taught Traditional Matsubayashi Ryu and he never abused me, never held holds to punish or show his superiority but training with him was harder as opposed to a white belt who was weak in the Style.. Even going easy on me he was strong and it forced me to work it to learn and he grew up right where I grew up .. The Sensei's would regularly go to Japan and train in a retreat yearly as the years up to Master's death approached. Every time he came back from Japan class was 2x harder and more punishing with the pace he'd set.
He said, "this isn't the karate Kid, it isn't sport Karate, you don't sweep the leg, you break it when your being attacked and don't think twice.."

I used to spar with everybody, even with our heavy weights. I am a 150lbs woman, fighting at 143lbs.
Now I am picky with my sparring partners, if my go-to team mates are already partnered up I choose the heavy bag over someone who I know would not benefit me or could even hurt me. Especially at sparring meetups.
I can take some hard shots and kicks to the body, but if you are a heavy hitter to the head I am 100% stopping the round. I don't care what somebody else will think about me. I won't be fighting on a professional level, I will need my brain for the next 40 years to pay my bills🧠😂

I just turned 44 and I started sparring kickboxing back in the 90s at age 15, almost 30 years ago now. When I think about how bad my coach was, throwing me in there as a kid with bigger, older guys, who were throwing at least 90 to 100% of their power, it really makes me angry. My first coach was one of those guys that thought his students getting their ass kicked made them tougher, so he would basically applaud guys who were like 40 pounds heavier and more experienced for trying to knock me out in sparing. I'm probably still dealing with the effect of some of those shots 30 years later, and now of course, I know the way he trained was completely wrong

6'4" and about 213lbs here so same situation. Being gentle actually takes a lot of practice.
I think having had to learn to pull my techniques and being mindful of being relaxed (so as to not follow through hard) has actually helped me get technically better because I have to throw with good form to be able to control the power behind the strikes and being relaxed in general helps save energy.

The guys who feel like they always have to “get it back” after being touched are usually dangerous. Means they can’t let the previous exchange go and usually have to ramp it up in either speed or power or both to find their opening. Conversely, if you touch someone and they say “good job” or “nice technique” chances are they are safe because they didn’t bring their ego with them.

I am however very picky about the guys that I do move with. There are about two heavyweights that I am able to move with, but it is only because I know that they have amazing control. Or jabbing me when I do lowkicks because their arms are that long. Too frustrating for me.

      @duffpaddy3996 ปีที่แล้ว

I can tell you it's just as frustrating for the other side, being 200lbs/6'3" with long range myself. I'm either
      - slow with proper technique, getting harassed by people going full speed,
      - fast with sloppy technique so I don't accidentally knock them out or hurt them
      - full speed and proper technique is not an option, I've ended enough sparring rounds even with like 40% power 🙄

    • @Ash__Adler
      @Ash__Adler ปีที่แล้ว

@@duffpaddy3996 I mean, I don't find it frustrating or problematic to spar with size mismatches because I have no interest in competing for sport and want my skills to be useful in actually defending myself. As long as I don't feel like I'm in immediate danger of getting hurt, I'm willing to focus on being solid defensively and keeping calm enough to think and react while being knocked around. Well, ok, there are times where it's frustrating in the moment, but that's no different from sparring with someone who's so much better that it feels like I'm being completely shut down 😅

This is the worst. When they give off the vibe that they will refuse to "lose" to you so they will always increase intensity if you are winning at an equal pace. You either have to let them win or end up in a brawl. You can usually spot them ahead of time because they won't make eye contact or have friendly acknowledgement of you as a fellow human before the spar OR they have too much personality on display. In both cases they are clearly see sparring as a reflection of they ego, either they need to "win" to feel good or they need to put on a performance for an imaginary audience.

I think you mentioned a very important point about the control on spinning techniques. It's not only about being able to throw a very soft spinning hook kick, it's about being able to adapt and react in unexpected scenarios where your opponent move and the moment of impact ends up being a lot earlier than expected.

we had one "spinning back kick guy" and one "rigid guy". The rigid guy was the one who always raised the tempo and hardiness to almost 100%, because he wasn`t fast enough otherwise, and the lack of technique meant that he probably felt unsuccessful at light sparring .
One day he ended up raising tempo again, and the other guy accidently broke his ribs with a spinning back kick.
Now, normally the guy who loved doing spinning kicks would just hit you with average power, and it was completely ok, as the tempo was decent. I sparred with him many times and the worst what I got - moderately unpleasant body kicks to keep you on your guard.
But the rigid guy was so aggressive in inflating power every time he sparred, that he just got himself into facing a lot less controlled kick, probably even ran right into it without proper defense.
So yeah, if you are rigid guy - you might be the one who is hurt more at the end of the day.
Just don`t treat it as a competition against someone who is much faster, just use it as a practice, relax and don`t get into "full power" scenarios.

If they think you’re gonna go light they wouldn’t be scared, but if they act scared even after you tell them you’re gonna go light it means that they think you’re lying and their in danger. These guys will go as hard as they possibly can to try and protect themselves even after getting hit with light strikes. Had a bigger guy like this hit me with a full power hook to the back of the head when I was new to boxing and I felt pretty off for a while after. Not worth it at all.

I have to point out something as a big guy. I have 100 kg. And I am usually the "big guy", but I am also really technical. So when I do the rounds and I am really in control and touch the head, many people being my size or smaller, when they realize I am technically good and can outsmart them, they become really mean and do the cheap shots. They like apologize after, but don't really realize what would happen if I did the same. And I think if someone outsmarted you take it like a man and like a martial artist and be nice 🙂
Just to give an example. If someone kicks you in the head really light and holds the kick, don't be an ass and pretend to catch it and counter it aggressively, he could knock you out if he didn't hold it, so instead acknowledge that he got you and be polite 😊

With that much of a differential, the bigger person doesn't have to hit hard. It isn't just about the force they generate, but the amount of force my body can absorb.

Hey Gabriel. I have a question. Or I guess you can say a scenario that I’d like your opinion on. I go to a pretty small gym where everyone is pretty personable and we take care of each other. But we have one guy who is a pro that comes to our gym. Countless times I see him tee off on all of the smaller guy that I enjoy sparring with. Me being 6’7 210 and him standing 6’3 around 185 he’s really the only person that I can spar with to get ready for opponents my size. I usually never have an issue when we start trading shots and I have a pretty reliable defense, enough to stay comfortable in these situations. But right off the bat he always throws body shots at almost 100%. Even to the head. So I work my defense and exchange some lengthy punches to move him back. He’s very much a pressure fighter and just walks forward no matter what. Usually after I establish my presence the round starts to get better and he’s not sparring as hard. Then out of no where WHAM he throws a leg kick full force to the top of my knee. I felt it instantly swell up. At this point I was frustrated. I usually pull a lot of my punches and kick’s because I have a distance advantage and I still want us all to get in good training I don’t want to hurt anybody. But right away I started working my combos and actually landing head kicks ( which I don’t like to do in light sparring). I held him off and avoided any other strikes till the end of the round but now my knee has been swollen for a week and I’m supposed to travel to another gym to get some training in with new people. But I hope my leg is good by then. I am a week into training camp, getting ready for my first amateur mma fight. Would you say it’s safe to just not spar with him? Of communicate that we need to tone the intensity down. He’s kind of hard headed and looking for the next person to beat up I guess because he’s lost his last few fights. Now I’ve been a student of the fight game for a while and have been trained in boxing, kick boxing, and jiu jitsu. And I usually fair pretty well against everyone, even the guys with multiple fights. Not bragging by any means just trying to explain better. I don’t necessarily feel like I’m thrown to the wolves since he can’t beat on me as much as my smaller training partners. But I’m this instance I feel like I could possibly be injured before my debut, or get into a heated sparring session which I don’t feel the need to do. I just know I don’t have to prove myself to anybody at camp and I rather walk into weigh ins knowing I protected my body the best I can while getting in the proper amount of training. What would you do if you were in my position?? Hopefully you see this soon or before my debut. Thank you for all your help! LOVE your channel I listen to it all day at work and even while eating dinner.

#2 is just rude; these people should not be allowed in the gym. I could be wrong but I read it as an ego thing; they want to hit really hard but are afraid of getting hit. So they ask to go slow and once you're in a rhythm they try to take your head off. Then when you take it to their level they ask to go slow again. Rude. In my opinion, the best way to deal with them once you've identified them is to keep it light, and then when the round is nearly over light them up like a christmas tree. Then take them aside and have a talk with them about etiquette.

However the person organising it didnt want to spend money on a proper judge
so the fight will be without verdict. Sooo its more like a multi gym sparring thingy,

in order to prepare and i was able to send my sparring partner on the ground.

(whenever someone goes too hard our coach tells to go lighter, but you know, it was supposed
to be hard sparring) despite my sparring partner training 2 months longer than me.
Did i maybe go too hard? My coach just said i did really well, despite me being kinda sorry
for that guy (he is like 1 year younger)
oh also fun fact, i think my low kick (whcih was rather hard) didnt land properly and now it hurts when

I have this guy at my kickboxing gym who is the worst guy to spar with. He's really stiff, punches way too hard, has a tendency to get mad really quickly (making him just throw even harder punches) and just overall looks like he's training mma instead of kickboxing. He has this very hunched over, forward-leaning stance with a really long and loose guard (not really protecting anything, but looking like he's gonna shoot for a takedown any second). He also likes to throw fancy kicks that end up really had because he can't even do the basics correctly. In addition to doing all of this, he does all this sparring in 10oz gloves. I'm a 77kg (169lbs) guy, and even i spar with 16oz gloves to avoid hurting my sparring partners.

It seems like you are uncomfortable sparring with people who do not stay in some pretty tight and thin lines
😂🤙🏾 I get it though you’re looking to keep yourself safe as you progress through your career. Also probably a good ideology for most people to follow, though I am glad you still encouraged people to do what they feel safe doing. I think that if you have good partners and good agreements your partner can be doing any of those things while still being safe and I also think that when preparing for a fight especially, you would sometimes want a partner who is doing some of those things to simulate an up coming opponents style. But that is obviously a very specific circumstantial reason to do sparring of that kind. I also will say that in my experience sparring against partners of various sizes, style preferences as well as varying degrees of training is one of if not the best form of preparation for any form of combat. Safety first of course. But I will also say that it has a bit less of a direct effect on combat sports though I definitely believe that it does improve both fighters for a heavy guy, lets say 2 weight classes above another guy to spar with each other in a playful manner with some well established understanding of one another and the obvious discrepancy. One is getting more skilled at fighting a smaller faster squirrelly opponent and the other is getting more skilled at taking on a guy with a size advantage reach, weight, height etc. That is just the base of what they get , but honestly the potential for overall body awareness of both yourself and your opponents body should increase because your experiential dataset has grown. Anyway just some thoughts I had as I watched. 😌🤙🏾

Regarding 2: Just ask them after some shots if the intensity is okay for them. Just ask them after some shots if the intensity is okay for them, she will most likely say "yes keep going" or she will ask you to tone it down a bit. Most women can't really evaluate how hard they are really hitting since we are mostly used to train with way heavier men and I never met a man who would admit that the woman goes a little bit to hard 😂 And be more careful with shots to the head than with somebody your size.
I am a woman too and I appreciate when my team mates weighing 20-30 lbs more than me don't hold back too much with kicks and body shots. For me that's great conditioning, no woman will hit me harder than them in a fight.

I’ve been training Muay Thai for about 18 months and all of my injuries have come from sparring people I knew were going to go too hard.
I’m very picky with who I’ll spar with above light flow sparring, and i’m very quick to tell my partner to tone it down. One of my coaches actually mocked me about it recently. And just a couple days ago I sparred a guy probably 20 pounds heavier than me, tense and clearly throwing with bad intentions. For whatever reason, I decided against my better judgement to continue sparring the guy and now I have either a bruised or cracked rib.
