      I mean having "kitsch" or "ugly" as your wedding theme is kinda of a brilliant idea. All wedding pictures age eventually but this way you can be like no we intentionally wanted it to be ugly.

      @@fh9061 Depending how passive or outright aggressive the other family members are being, it could even be seen as a message endorsing the marriage itself. Sort of a "Yeah, I know it doesn't look like we go together, but we like it, and we are beautiful on the inside." sort of thing.

      Probably so the step-mom can't change it lol. That's what one of the brides my mom had come in to order her's for 400 people. But she didn't make it a ugly cake. And dang if the Step-mom came in two days later and tried to change it and was told no. Lol

    see, this is what "the customer is always right" means. it doesn't matter if what they want is ugly as hell, or whatever else personal taste is, it's your job, within reason, to make that available to them. it does not mean "do whatever i say, no matter what, or else it's bad business practice."

      That truly is the meaning indeed. In this case the costumer wanted revange and payed for it it was their intent so she wasn't paying only for the cake, she wanted the "ugly cake" not only a cake

      Well... It depends... If you make something for a client that is perceived as bad in the eyes of most it always comes with the risk of other people thinking badly about your work and therefore losing potential clients even if the initial customer is pleased with what you served.

      @@Jami-vm1zv Adorable that you are missing that she is choosing the decorations to celebrate her and her husband's relationship.
      And considering her way of setting her foot down is to make sure the cake still is tasty, I'd say it's a surprisingly kind way of saying "I choose what's right for my family so butt out".
      Just because someone's mom makes demands it doesn't mean you have to cater to them. It's not the step-mom's wedding.
      Personally I wouldn't invite her and I'd make it abundantly clear why not either. The person ordering the cake is alot nicer than I would've been.

      Literally though. I come from a family with engineers on both sides and if I had to make this I would for sure be asking for advice.
      Fortunately, cakes are less complicated to design than most things professional engineers build so you could probably hire an engineering student to figure it out for less money than someone with a finished degree.
      Still definitely an up charge though.

      @@aiden3627 scaffolding could be cute on a construction themed cake but on this cake it would need to be as jarring as possible.
      Cake 1 is covered in lime scaffolding to support a platform holding cake 2, which is covered in magenta scaffolding supporting a platform holding up cake 3.
      The platforms could touch cake on both sides like the frosting layer of a normal cake, or they could be further elevated for an even weirder design.
      Idk how to build tiny scaffolding for cakes but the premise seems sound.

    Get her to sign that she knows her options were advised against and are not very structurally sound but she insisted. I would never tell a bride no, I think you handled it well. I definitely had some out there visions for my wedding and I am so glad I went with them and the ones I was talked out of I always regretted.

    This is the right way! This is what the saying 'the customer is always right in the matters of taste' means. If you think it's ugly and it's not your preference doesn't matter. So long as the customer is making an informed choice it doesn't matter if their choice is ugly.

    Fake cake for the cutting, gets wheeled back into the kitchen/out of view, 3 cakes come out for serving

      I like it. It's brilliant.
      Just dye some foam the proper colors with only the cutting layer (gingerbread) being real then wheel it back out the foam back into the sofa and cut the real cakes. You'll have the hideous showpiece and less of a headache.

      But a display/picture cake is a good idea. Could cost less if they just have to show that off, and not have to worry about a heavy structured cake or transporting it. Just have something that looks good to guests and photos while the real cake arrived safely without worries of talking teirs and is already being cut and plated.
      No need to worry if someone tries to ruin the cake or kids try to sneak/grab a taste.

      @@judithsixkiller5586 not exactly the same, but you can get chocolate covered crystallised ginger and that’s really nice, but it is personal taste like everything else. In my mind, I wouldn’t put a carrot cake with ginger fudge, but might change my mind if I tried it.

    Not to be picky, but there are many different colors that can be called yellow-lemon, banana, canary,taxi cab,etc. It’s entirely possible that she didn’t care which was used, but I am surprised the question of shade of yellow wasn’t confirmed considering how many people will decide one little detail “ruined the most important day of my life!”

    Though isn't Tres Leches the cake traditionally soaked in milk, whereas dulce de leche is just a variety of Spanish caramel that would be traditionally more of a filling, like in alfajores?

    Even though it'll be 12 days before the wedding (not a lot of time), at least you're not spending gargantuan amounts of time decorating the cake and making it look perfect, since it's expected to be an ugly cake. I respect the bride for making it her wedding, and not her stepmom's wedding.

    I would've asked her if we could do a completely yellow 3 tier with a 2 tier "fake cake" at the bottom with a real top for them to cut and do sheet cakes for the large most requested bottom 2 lol but at least she was fully aware that her cake is going to kind of mush together so the very moist cakes will give the very dry top tier a little bit of something lol
