  • This seminar was amazing and I am truly thankful for meeting each and every officer, cadet and Summer Seminar student during my time there.
    |If you're vegan or vegetarian it's very doable at USAFA but like in most cases requires dedication and commitment|

    Looks so fun! Did you all do any physical exercise? How long was the seminar?

      Yeah, we did some. The first one was on military training day, and it was about an hour or less. You can see at 2:26 they came to our rooms at about 0545 and were kicking and screaming on our doors to get us out of bed. Once out, we had to go out into the hall and hold a plank until every single person came out of their dorms. Then we did a bunch of push-ups. We then played a scavenger hunt and memorized quotes and had to remember how to address the cadre in the correct way because if you didn't listen/follow directions your whole element did push-ups or ran or did sit-ups. Then the next day we PT at 0600 and it was a circuit drill so you had to run to each corner of the field that you see at 1:31 and do either 19 push ups, sit ups, squats or jumping jacks and keep going until they said stop. The altitude takes a tole if you've never experienced it, so it'll feel like you have asthma on the first lap but after that, it'll get better and you'll catch your breath. My biggest advice to any PT at Summer Seminar is to do everything as an element and stay as a team. It makes a difference.

      They told us that Summer Seminar has changed from years past that solely did a mini basic training to where it's now a more well rounded USAFA expereince. That's why there wasn't a whole lot of PT because they filled the days instead with informational briefings on everything from careers to the extracurricular opportunities, to sessions to meet the professors, workshops on the different classes, getting to know the cadets and to really tell you all that USAFA has to offer and to then answer all of your questions.

    I just had an interview with USAFA for the Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering job, and I hope I get in. Who wouldn't want to teach in an academic-first institution with faculty to student ratio of 1:6, where students averaged a 31 on the ACT?

      So for summer seminar heres a quick day by day breakdown:
      Day 1: Orientation day, got placed into our elements (consists of 8 summer seminar students and one cadet), went to briefings(we had about 4 briefings a day)
      Day 2: Military training day
      -Kicked and screamed on our doors at 0530
      -Had to do a scavenger hunt, memorize quotes, address the cadre's the proper way and if we didn't we did lots of push-ups, sit-ups and ran everywhere. One kid in our element wore navy shorts so they harassed which in part made so that everytime he got in trouble we got in trouble so I think we did the most push-ups out of any other element.
      -Learned about all the programs USAFA had to offer such as the remotely piloted aircraft operation center, parachuting team called Wings of Blue
      -Got briefings about the pilot program
      -took a historical tour around USAFA
      Day 3:
      -Visited all the athletic facilities such as the football field, indoor track, pool, fencing room, ice hockey building...
      -Practiced the physical training evaluation
      -Played intramurals
      Day 4:
      -Physical training day- was doable but difficult because of the altitude
      -Saw the courtroom for cadets who break the Academy's creed of "we will not lie, steal or cheat nor tolerate among us anyone who does"
      -went to pilot simulation and flew an airplane
      -Also was academic day so we met the professors and learned about the different classes and majors
      Day5:
      -Last day
      -Went to airport and hung out with the kids who had similar flights
      -Housten was my last stop and said good bey to the last of the summer seminar kids

    Is the application for this very competitive? If so how would your grades and overall character have to be?

    • @paigecensale
      @paigecensale  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say you would need to show signs of someone who would be a potential candidate that could be appointed to the Air Force Academy. So yes your grades do matter however they allow you to submit test scores such as SAT and ACT but I never did because I didn't take them yet and I was still accepted. Your extracurriculars matter a lot on this because that's the only way they're really going to understand who you are. When you apply you will need to write 2 essays. The topics I was given were: #1)Describe a hardship you faced how did it affect you, what did you learn about yourself... things like that. #2)What do you hope to learn from attending Summer Seminar?
      My advice for you would be to write them as a story. I wrote the first essay as a story where I told what my hardship was but I always related it to then it leading me towards the path of discovering I wanted to join the Air Force. The second one I wrote it as a normal English essay with a thesis statement and three body paragraphs, so not like a story. In each essay what they're looking for is someone who has characteristics that would make a good officer so make sure that you show them not just tell them who you are in your essays. An example would be to not say "I am a great problem solver because..." but saying "Before my junior year I began to seek out careers that I was curious about in order to gain perspective on the reality of working in these lines of work. So I became a volunteer police officer and a firefighter and even had coffee with lawyers in order to understand what it was I truly enjoyed doing."

    • @paigecensale
      @paigecensale  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be more direct, your GPA would probably need to be above a 3.5 and you'll need to be involved in activities that show your characteristics such as leadership, problem-solving, teamwork etc.

    • @paigecensale
      @paigecensale  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      honestly there was barley any PT when I went. look at the previous comments where someone asked about PT and I said exactly what we did. I would say when you work out do circuit training. like lunges for 30 seconds to then jumping jacks for 1 minute to then push ups for 1 minute to then a 50 meter dash and then squats back to start and repeat three times and then like a mile run. I love doing exercises like these because they build your stamina and they're fun and not monotonous like running on the treadmill all day. just get the essentials down aka running, push ups, sit ups and squats. and take it one day at a time
